Award season is back and that means lots of after parties! Celebrities love to get dressed up and have some fun at these sparkling events. Sometimes they are there to celebrate an award they won, while other times they're blowing off some steam because they didn’t make the cut during the awards ceremony. It's time to let their hair down in such cases. Either way, being a celebrity can be tough work so these glam events are opportunities for them to shine, to show us what they're made of - and to start some fashion trends in the process, perhaps.
We get to see the gowns and the glitter, the simple dresses and the OTT ones, some of which are pretty impressive. From Dakota Fanning's classic Little Black Dress with a twist to Diane Kruger's bold-coloured and high-shine stripy outfit, check out these 20 celebrity after-party outfits that deserve awards because they're so memorable.
Only Blake Lively could pull off an outfit like this one and still be considered one of the best-dressed women in Hollywood! She wore this outfit to the after parties that were going on after the Met Gala last year. Her outfit was a colourful plaid mini skirt teamed up with matching boots, but the style icon managed to pull it off with all the confidence in the world.
It wasn’t always that way however, as she once told Glamour UK that she wore a $13 Forever 21 dress to a premiere. She recalled,
“On the red carpet people were like ‘who are you wearing?’ But when I told them, they said I shouldn’t admit to it, like it was more impressive to have a designer gown that’s thousands of dollars. After that, I just told people it was vintage.”
Dakota Fanning has been in the industry since she was a kid so she knows how to make a look work for her. She has never been a celebratory to wear something inappropriate to an awards event. She looks amazing in this black dress and it just goes to show that she has all the class in the world. When asked to describe her style by The Telegraph she said,
“I don’t know if I can, actually. It really changes all the time. I try to throw something unexpected into my wardrobe just to keep people on their toes.”
Once again, Lively looks amazing. We aren’t sure what we love most about the outfit, the stars or the slit in the dress. She has had some of the most incredible outfits over the years and her maternity wear is epic. The surprising part about Lively is that she doesn’t use a stylist. “Probably because I have control issues and a big ego—that’s probably the honest answer,” Lively joked to Glamour.
But in all seriousness, she said that styling her own outfits often lets her be more imaginative than acting can. “I love design and I love fashion, and it’s a way to be creative," she said.
Not everyone would choose yellow for an after-party dress but Jessica Biel looks flawless. She is another actress that grew up in the limelight for better or worse. She certainly dresses better these days than she did when she was younger.
“I wish I would’ve explored some different shapes, and not gone so sexy all the time,” she shared with ET Canada about her earlier style. “I think if you look at some of my earlier choices, maybe it didn’t need to always be about the body. I know it’s a vibe that you feel when you’re young, but still, that’s what I would’ve done a little differently.”
We can’t imagine anyone else in this dress, she just pulls it off beautifully. Jennifer Lawrence is known to be an awkward girl who doesn’t worry much about fashion but when it comes to an after party, she knows her stuff. There is one fashion accessory that Lawrence believes is a must but we rarely see her in it.
“Cool little hats,” she told Vogue, laughing, “Hats are impossible to travel with.” She has stated that she loves New York because fashion is bolder there while L.A, where is lives, has an expectation that you dress down.
This is not the type of outfit for the weak at heart and not everyone would be so bold as to wear it. Blunt might be taking advice from her good friend Blake Lively, a girl whose closet she would love to raid. “Ooh, Blakey Lively's got a fabulous wardrobe,” Blunt told Elle with a glint in her eye.
But back to her outfit here. It's inspired by Mary Poppins. Blunt said,
“Mary Poppins is effortlessly stylish. But I think if I went out dressed like that every day, I would get mobbed, and also, I would stick out like a sore thumb. I'm going to go with Blake Lively...give me all of your clothes.”
It’s kind of expected that supermodels always look fantastic. They live in the world of fashion because it’s their job. Sometimes they make mistakes when it comes to fashion choices but it’s a rare moment indeed.
Eva Herzigová clearly knows how to make an impression at an after party. Everything about this outfit says class and elegance. It’s not every day that we are impressed by an outfit that is not a dress but she definitely did well with this one. From top to bottom she is dressed in black and looking pretty chic in a hat.
Emma Stone has always had eclectic taste and this is just one of many outfits that she has worn that made us stop and really check out her style. She does so well on her red carpet looks that she is considered to be a fashion icon.
She told Vogue that she doesn’t see herself that way, though. “No, I’ve never thought about that. Though it would be supercool if everyone started wearing yellow leather shoes.”
She would probably be the actress that could pull off yellow shoes. Everything she puts on looks pretty amazing.
This full body dress is full of sparkle and it’s just the kind of dress that belongs on Diane Kruger. This actress has come a long way since we saw her in the movie, Troy. She actually started off in modelling but it wasn’t something that she could see herself sticking with long term.
“I think when you’re 15 you want to be looked at, you’re testing out your womanly boundaries,” she told Porter magazine. “The second time I saw ’60s fashion trends come around, I was like, ‘[Oh gosh] I’m done, I need to get out of here.'”
So she'll stick to 80s-inspired fashion, then, like this beautiful creation.
Though not technically snapped at an after-party, this picture deserves a spot on the list! It must be pretty amazing for Cindy Crawford to see her daughter, Kaia, following in her footsteps. The young girl is now building her career in the modelling industry and it will be interesting to see if she gets the same supermodel status that her mother did.
She's certainly got that x-factor that shines in photographs. Here she's at the pre-Met Gala party, looking cool and stylish, but effortlessly so. Quite a contrast from her mother's outfit, but dressed all in black, she looks super-chic.
We always love seeing the big stars wear elegant gowns when it comes to red carpet events but with after parties, we also see a lot of different, more relaxed outfits. In this case, Gal Gadot stole the show with her jacket and pantsuit. Although it looks comfy, it's still glamorous.
It’s really hard to believe that this superstar has a military background but that’s probably why she played such an impressive Wonder Woman. “But the army wasn't that difficult for me. The military gave me good training for Hollywood,” she told Daily Mail. Hmm, wonder where she got her style from?
What a gorgeous dress and so well put together! Anne Hathaway rarely veers off in the wrong direction when it comes to fashion, even though it seems she does so effortlessly.
"The more I get to play characters that are glamorous, the less pressure I feel to do it in my own life," she told Vogue UK. "When you never get dressed up, sometimes you think: 'Oh, I really should pull it together.' When it's your job to look like that, you think: 'I'll just wear jeans and the most awesome rock-star T-shirt I can find.' If anything, it's liberated my inner couch potato."
One is wearing a dress while the other is in a pantsuit but they both look glamorous and elegant. They also both look like they haven’t aged a year. Uma Thurman is just as iconic as her fashion choices. She told InStyle magazine,
"Fashion is the machine that drives the business. Style, on the other hand, is an unconscious gift that money can't buy. It's being comfortable not only in your clothes but in your own skin. I've always admired how European women have such effortless style, as though they've been culturally raised to wear clothes gracefully and effortlessly.”
Taylor Swift is another person who rarely makes a mistake when it comes to fashion. We never know what she’s going to decide to wear, whether it’s an elegant, bold or simple choice. She has even used fashion over the years to change her reputation from a bubblegum popstar to someone a little edgier. Her style has evolved over the years and it just seems to be getting better. This dress she's wearing might look OTT on someone else, but on Swift, it's perfect and really brings out her inner fashionista.
When Emily Blunt chooses to wear a gown to an event, she is always a show-stopper. We love this Alexander McQueen dress that shimmers and shines, and it works beautifully with her blonde hair and gold earrings.
We have to wonder if Blunt picked up some style tips while filming The Devil Wears Prada. She told Elle magazine, “I feel like Emily [of Devil Wears Prada] dressed desperately, and she needs a snack, clearly. So we're going to say not her, she was trying too hard.” She did wear some pretty cool clothes, we would love to have access to the movie magazine’s wardrobe!
Gigi Hadid wore this amazing golden outfit at the MOSCHINO [tv] H&M show and after party in New York and she glittered wherever she went. She is another model who has impeccable taste and she would have to in order to have the confidence to put that outfit on.
“I feel like more recently I’m really dressing for myself and not for the world and for what people expect me to wear. I really try to wake up in the morning and put something on that excites me and motivates me to have a fun day,” she told Elle.
Shay Mitchell is fairly new to the scene but she has a sense of style that is hard to believe considering her age. Usually, when new actresses come on the scene they stumble around in fashion for a while. But not Mitchell. She knows fashion and she always looks amazing. This low-key look oozes with style!
"I've always been obsessed with fashion," Mitchell tells Harper's Bazaar. "I really don't take it too seriously because I think that it's meant to be fun."
If that's her secret to looking runway-ready, then it's working for her.
Selena Gomez is as flawless as ever as she heads out to the after-party scene. Those boots are amazing and who would have thought that you could pair them with a dress? She looks feminine but strong.
Selena has her own collection of activewear now called Strong Girl SGxPUMA and it’s all about strength. “I think it’s important for girls to know the strength in everything, their identity and their soul, lies within themselves,” Gomez told Elle. “And too much today you give that away so easily, from social media to school or relationships. And I think it’s important - I want to remind girls that they’re perfectly strong the way they are.”
Jennifer Aniston is one woman whose closet we would love to raid. Whether she wears short dresses, long dresses or khaki pants, she always looks incredible. Here she's spotted going to the Bounty Hunter movie after-party and she looks stylish as ever without being OTT.
Jen is so into fashion that she even converted her garage into a walk-in closet at one point. Her previous husband, Justin Theroux, told Us magazine,
"We have made an extension on our house. I don’t know what [was] made into what, but we found more room to create a better bathroom and a closet. It sounds probably more elaborate than it is, but basically when we were out of town—[Jen] was working, I was working—we took that opportunity to create a little more closet space.”
We can’t say enough good things about this floor-length lavender dress. Natalie Dormer must have felt completely magical while wearing it. While it's quite simply cut, the colour and shimmer elevate it to the elegant ranks. Dormer wore this sparkly number to the Persol & BFI London Film Festival Awards Party in London.
When it comes to her sense of fashion, Dormer states that she always has to be comfortable. “Taking fashion risks for the sake of it is not how I get my buzz!” she tells Glamour.
Well, it might not have been a risk but this dress definitely paid off.
