Jeff Goldblum is one of very few Hollywood celebs who've actually achieved an iconic, cult-like status while he's still alive. In fact, his fame exceeds any of the roles he's played in movies - a lot of it due to memes that have circulated on social media the last decade or so.

There’s just something about his presence that makes him more special than most stars, and we're not just talking about his acting career - which spans back to the early 1970s. He's become a style icon in his 60s, has graced the cover of magazines, is married to a former Olympic gymnast who's more than 30 years younger than him, he plays a mean jazz piano - and even released an album. All this, and he still appreciates his fans and the weird stuff they post about him online. There's no denying his weirdness though, as we'll cover here.

20 13-Year Old Jeff Tried To Hire A Lady Of The Night

During his appearance on Graham Norton's talk show, Goldblum told the story of how he stole $5 from his father's wallet to procure a "lady of the night" when he was just 13. He went to the red light district, and on the way to the bedroom, he asked the girl what time it was, looked at his watch and said he had to go but would return soon. He never did.

19 He Intimidated Baboons Into Respecting Him

Live baboons were required when filming The Fly, and the sheer strength and size of them made director David Cronenberg uncomfortable - but he worried needlessly. It turned out that Goldblum’s physique led to the baboons treating him with respect and affection. In one particular instance, one of the baboons got spooked, and Cronenberg and the baboon wrangler both credit Goldblum for dominating the baboon and de-escalating the situation.

18 His Shrink Officiated His Wedding

Goldblum and his therapist Lawanda Katzman have a really close relationship. No one but Jeff Goldblum would have his therapist officiate his wedding. When he appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Goldblum said he had been in therapy with Katzman “over many decades”, so he felt she was the right person to get him started on his third marriage.

17 His Acting Style Was Purely Accidental

Known for playing characters that are somewhat offbeat or “quirky,” Goldblum is fully aware of his distinctive delivery of dialogue. He found his rhythm when 1978’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers. According to the script, his line was “I never thought they would come in metal ships,” but it came out as “I-I-I-I never thought they would come in … metal ships.”

16 Jeff Experimented In His Youth (And His Mom Helped)

These days Goldblum doesn’t even drink alcohol or caffeine anymore, but he has admitted to experimenting with various substances in his youth. His mother was even growing wacky tabacky in their backyard at one point. Goldblum tried it for the first time with his brother and has also admitted to trying other substances a handful of times.

15 He Overdid The Carrot Juice Cleanses

Jeff Goldblum is a self-admitted health nut, crediting his remarkably good looks for a man in his 60s to sleep, a balanced diet, and a clean lifestyle. He told GQ this lifestyle was taken too far in the past, “My first wife and I would bring our juicer on planes, and we’d do a carrot cleanse for a week, until I’d turn orange and all my poop would be orange.”

14 He Browses #JeffGoldblum On Instagram

Some would say this is a bit narcissistic, but we think it's because he genuinely appreciates his fans. Goldblum enjoys sharing fan art via Instagram. In 2017, he told GQ “I like to look at #jeffgoldblum on Instagram, which my wife makes fun of. And then I take pictures of the things that interest me. There are many paintings and pictures of me, some nice and some very primitive and bad."

13 He Lost Out On An Oscar Because It Was A Horror Movie

The Fly is considered a cult hit, and there were plenty of rumors buzzing when it was eligible for the 1987 Academy Awards. It's believed that the Academy didn't award Goldblum that year because his performance was in a horror movie. The actor told the Chicago Tribune that he was disappointed and hurt afterward.

12 His Role In Thor: Ragnarok was 100% Improvised

Those who think he sticks to the script better think again. His role as the Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok was 100 percent improvised. Each scene was shot about 10 times, and Goldblum would perform it differently every time. He's even said that the end result was due to Waititi’s improv and editing skills that helped bring the best out of him.

11 This Statue Is A Real Thing That Exists

Remember that scene in Jurassic Park where the injured Dr. Malcolm is laying down with his shirt open and a questionable "come hither look"? That exact pose was actually recreated for a 25-foot statue that was erected close to the Tower Bridge in London as a tribute to Jurassic Park’s 25-year anniversary. It was on display for a year, from July 2018 to July 2019.

10 He Was Playing Piano In Bars At Age 14

As a teenager, Goldblum called every cocktail lounge in Pittsburgh in order to get a job playing jazz piano. He has said he used his "most adult voice" and told the managers he was calling about a piano gig. The strategy seemed to work as the 14-year old ended up playing in establishments he wasn't legally allowed to enter.

9 He Had To Be Removed From The Set Of 'The Fly'

Goldblum suggested that his then-girlfriend, Geena Davis, should get a role in The Fly. His plan backfired when she was cast as Brundle's love interest and he watched her perform in a steamy hot scene with actor John Getz. Goldblum actually had to be removed from the set and was told to deal with his reaction privately so he wouldn't interfere with the filming.

8 He Once Kept A Fly In A Fly In A Plastic Bag As A Pet

During the filming of The Fly, Goldblum kept a rather unusual pet. He actually had a fly in a plastic bag in order to study its movements. Goldblum really wanted to make sure that he incorporated actual physical cues from flies. Yes, it's definitely weird, but it also made his performance better.

7 He's A Natural Born Flirt

Just by watching his on-screen performance, it's easy to see why Goldblum deserves his reputation for being a flirt. His Independence Day co-star Vivica A. Fox, said Goldblum “has a way of melting the panties off…he’s very sensuous…And you’re like, ‘Okay, did I just get seduced?’” Nick Offerman said Goldblum possesses “a natural timbre that vibrates the pelvic bone of whomever he’s making eye contact with.”

6 He Was The Victim Of A Particularly Strong Death Hoax

Back in 2009, there were stories circulating in the news that Goldblum had fallen off a cliff in New Zealand. It went so far that he actually had to call his mother to comfort her and tell her he was still alive. The main issue here was, of course, poor journalistic standards and sensationalistic reporting in order to make more money from tragedies.

5 He Had His First Child At The Age Of 62

Whereas most people start their families somewhere between the age of 25 and 40, Goldblum waited until 2015 before he had his first child - at the tender age of 62 - followed by his second child in 2017. He claims it was the right time for him to start a family, but in reality, there's a good chance the kids won't have a father to guide them once they're done with college.

4 He Thought Being Ill Was A Sign That He Should Focus On Acting

Prior to becoming a household name, Goldblum was selling office supplies to correctional facilities in between auditions. After just one week in that job, he became sick and took that as a sign that he should focus on becoming an actor, so he quit his job and stuck with his creative pursuits. Some would call it irresponsible, but it paid off in the long run.

3 He Would Actually Like To Be Spliced With A Dolphin

Everyone knows that Goldblum got spliced with a fly in the movie The Fly. But when a fan asked Goldblum what animal he would like to be spliced with in real life, Goldblum responded with "a dolphin", and that the name would be Surf Goldblum. This is perhaps the most Goldblumian response we've ever heard.

2 He Kept His Desire To Be An Actor Secret

When he was growing up in Pittsburgh, young Jeff kept his desire to be an actor hidden from others in fear of being ridiculed. In order to stay motivated, he used to write affirmations on the glass shower door when it steamed up, then wipe it clean afterward. He didn't even dare to keep a diary.

1 He Had An Exceptional 18th Birthday

When he was 18 years old, Goldblum made his stage debut in a chorus for Two Gentlemen of Verona while studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse. That's not all he did that day. He admitted that he lost his virginity that very same night. When some of the cast and crew went out for dinner after the show, Goldblum hooked up with an older woman who worked in the costume department.
