Fourteen years ago, when Tom Brady was still dating Bridget Moynahan, who eventually gave birth to his first child, John Edward Thomas Moynahan, 11, Gisele Bündchen, then 23, was dating a 30-year-old actor known as Leonardo DiCaprio.
DiCaprio, who has been casually linked to many models, was actually with Bündchen for five years. She is his longest known girlfriend, other than Bar Refaeli, who the actor dated for a whopping six years. For a while, it seemed like DiCaprio and Bündchen were a match made in Hollywood heaven, but the couple broke up in 2005.
In a new interview with PORTER magazine, the Brazilian model finally reveals why things didn’t work out with the Oscar-winning actor. Bündchen says that the breakup resulted from her own personal struggles with anxiety, crippling panic attacks and suicidal thoughts. “I didn’t feel like I could share my panic attacks with anyone," she says. "So I’d suppress it, and the more I suppressed it, the bigger it became.”
The Victoria's Secret Angel also discloses that at one point, she thought about jumping off of a balcony, which finally led her to seek help. In an attempt to get better, she found solace in her family and abandoned her unhealthy habits. This process was the reason she broke up DiCaprio, who at the time was still a carefree Hollywood party boy.
“No longer numbing myself with smoking, drinking and too much work, I was becoming more and more aware of things that I’d chosen not to look at,” she writes in her book, Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life. “Was I alone in wanting to do some serious soul-searching while he stayed the same? In the end, unfortunately, the answer was yes.”
Since that time, the model has completely changed her life by eliminating sugar, alcohol, and caffeine from her diet and taking up yoga and outdoor activities in order to improve her mental health. Two years after her split from DiCaprio, Bündchen met Brady. The couple married in 2009 and have two children, Vivian and Benjamin Brady.
Bündchen currently supports numerous charities including Save the Children, Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders, as well as several environmental causes. She is also the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme.
As of 2015, Bündchen has appeared in over 550 ad campaigns, 2000 magazine covers, 3500 magazine editorials and 800 fashion shows. The supermodel made her acting debut in Taxiin 2004, and also appeared in The Devil Wears Pradain 2006.
