“Wabi sabi” style manicures, which involve painting each of your five fingernails a different color and matching the pattern on your other hand, are popping up all over social media.
So, where does the name “wabi sabi” come from? Wabi sabi is actually a Japanese concept that refers to embracing imperfections and being open-minded when it comes to creativity. When people used the term wabi sabi in the past, they were usually referring to interior design. A “wabi sabi home” is comfortable and clean, but it’s okay for things to be a little messy, too. Now, this concept is making its way into the beauty world, and people are breaking away from the status quo when it comes to the traditional rules.
In other words, instead of trying to select one ideal color to match your typical outfits, why not have a little fun with your manicure and try out a rainbow of shades instead?
At first, it might seem like a wabi sabi manicure would look silly, but mismatched nails can actually look super sleek and sophisticated if you choose the right colors. If you really want your nails to stand out, you could go for a totally rainbow look and select five bright colors that don’t generally go together. But if you want a more subtle look, nail experts recommend choosing one color palette and sticking with it. For example, if you want to go for a cool, beachy vibe, pick a range of blues. If you love to wear chic pastels, rosy pink hues might be your best bet. Some people are even opting for an ombre-style look: to pull this off, start with the lightest shade on your pinky or thumb and then choose progressively darker shades.
This may be a major summer trend, but you can easily transition this look straight into fall with burnt oranges, bronze shades, and darker reds. Just imagine all of the possibilities for cute holiday color schemes!
