Disney has riled critics. From racial slurs to unattainable female beauty goals, contentions are ripe in the world of Disney. But perhaps what have gained the media company the most flack is Walt’s pretty princesses.
When it comes to Disney princesses, from Snow White to Ariel, they become obsessed with their love interests, which end up overtaking the entire story. Ariel gives up her voice for a pair of legs to seek out Eric, and ends up leaving her life and family under the sea for his life on land. And then there’s the issue of the men only being attracted to the princesses due to their appearance. Prince charming only falls for Cinderella when she’s all made up and wearing beautiful gown, after all.
When it comes to race, white reigns supreme and this is made clear in nearly all Disney movies. Even when princesses are supposed to be another race, they fall prone to “whitening”- their skin is lightened and their features are changed to make them look more Caucasian. Jasmine from Aladdin is a prime example of this.
