Summer has arrived, which means that at some point, most of us will get a sunburn. Even if it later turns to a tan, exposing the skin to the harmful rays of the sun to a point where it gets red and irritated is not a pleasant thing. The good news is that there are many simple and effective methods to treat a sunburn.

First, let's make it clear that wearing sunscreen is vital during the summertime. It is not only for keeping sunburns away but also for preventing other sun-related problems including premature wrinkles and melanoma. However, we are all human, we make mistakes, and sometimes we may forget to apply our sunscreen and we may be left with a painful sunburn to remind us of our error.

Allure went directly to the experts to find out the best ways to treat a sunburn. These tips will not only soothe the skin, but they will help to decrease the severity of these effects.

Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner shared that keeping your skin (and whole body) hydrated is crucial to treating any sunburn. Injured skin will heal far better if you are making an effort to drink lots of water, especially in the hot weather. Additionally, taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory, such as Advil or Ibuprofen, will not only reduce the pain but will also decrease any swelling and redness of the skin. Zeichner also advocated for applying a serum with vitamin C. This is crucial to helping minimize the effects of sun damage. Of course, consult a doctor before taking any medications or using any topical products.

Shari Marchbein, a dermatologist in New York City, also provided some amazing tips that all of us should follow if we suffer from blisters that appeared because of a sunburn. If you have blisters, your first instinct may be to pop them. But Marchbein stated that this is not a good idea! Not only will popping the blisters cause scaring, but it can also cause an infection. Leaving them alone will help the skin to heal quicker and healthier.

Finally, protect and prevent further sunburn by limiting your skin's exposure to the sun. If you absolutely have to be out in the sun, either cover up your sunburn or apply sunscreen excessively to any exposed skin. Once the skin is already sunburned, it can be harmed even easier, which will prolong the healing experience.
