Have you ever wondered how your hair actually benefits from conditioner? Most of us at one point have questioned why we use the product, and most would also agree it is because our hairstylist told us it was important.

Conditioner is a moisturizer for the hair. It combines specific ingredients such as silicones, oils, and soaps that wash way oily elements, to put moisture back into your 'do. Conditioner helps replenish the moisture that is stripped away by shampooing your hair.

Washington, D.C. based dermatologist Adam Friedman recently spoke with Allure magazine to discuss the benefits of conditioning your hair. He shared that the elements of the world fundamentally damage the cuticle or outer lining of the hair. Conditioner coats the hair to help with those injuries.

Another significant benefit, according to cosmetic chemist and author Perry Romanowsk, is that it makes your hair easier to comb. Applying conditioner will smooth out your hair, as well as detangle it, make it less frizzy and more delightful to touch. Romanowsk suggests that if you really want to know the effects of conditioner to apply it to only one side of your hair. The difference in the two sides will be enough for anyone to see why conditioner is good.

In order to maximize the effects of conditioner, all experts agree you must use conditioner every time you shampoo your hair. If you do that, then it will help elevate the damage that shampoo can do to your hair.

Everyone has a different hair type, but Romanowsk explains that there is not really a difference in products designated for specific hair type, such as dry, greasy or color-treated. She believes the format of your conditioner may make a difference but the composition from formula to formula does not.

What all of this means is that you should be using a conditioner. It also means that it is up to you to try different products to determine which one works best on your hair but don't shy away from one because it does not fit your hair type, be open.

Do you use conditioner? If so, what is your favorite brand? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
