Clueless became a pop culture classic movie after its initial release nearly 24 years ago. The film followed the life of Cher Horowitz and her group of friends as they navigated high school while living lavish lifestyles in Beverly Hills. Clueless became a relatable film for many of its fans who grew up in the '90s, who were just trying to deal with their friendships, relationships, and still try to figure out who they were as individuals.
Unbeknownst to the writers and actors at the time, the lingo used in Clueless would eventually become a staple in pop culture history. Many of the famous and somewhat hilarious one-liners that were said in the film are still used today.
Not only did Clueless provide new lingo for its many fans years ago, but the movie is also responsible for the many vibrant, colorful, and over-the-top outfits that the characters wore. 20 years later, and many people still dress up as their favorite Clueless characters for Halloween and other costume-themed parties.
Clueless became such a phenomenon after its 1995 release that it eventually had its very own sitcom based on the characters from the movie. Since 1995, many of the stars from Clueless have made names for themselves in Hollywood. They have since worked on other films and movies, but they will always be remembered for their iconic roles in the Clueless film. Here’s what a few of the Clueless stars look like today, compared to what they looked like in the movie.
20 Then: Alicia Silverstone (Cher Horowitz)
Alicia Silverstone already had one major film, The Crush, in her resume when she signed on to play the role of the main character in Clueless, Cher Horowitz. Cher was one of the most popular girls at her school, who didn't have a clue about the world surrounding her.
Silverstone didn't have to audition for the role of Cher thanks to her previous work on The Crush, as well as being the leading lady in Aerosmith's Crying music video. Clueless writer and director, and the film's casting director, agreed that Alicia Silverstone was perfect for the role of Cher.
19 Now: Alicia Silverstone (Cher Horowitz)
Thanks to Alicia Silverstone's performance as Cher Horowitz in Clueless, the actress was able to snag multiple roles after the film's release. Silverstone eventually became a household name and starred in films such as Batman & Robin where she played Batgirl after getting a production deal with Columbia.
Alicia Silverstone also made her Broadway debut back in 2002, for the stage version of The Graduate. Most recently, fans were able to catch Alicia Silverstone as Bonnie Nolan in a Paramount Network comedy series.
18 Then: Stacey Dash (Dionne 'Dee' Davenport)
Stacey Dash played the role of Cher's best friend, Dionne 'Dee' Davenport. Much like Cher, Dionne had a great sense of style. While many of the actors were around the same ages as the high school characters they were portraying, it wasn't the same case for Stacey Dash. In fact, Stacey was older than most of her fellow co-stars - she was 28 years old during filming!
She reprised her role as the teenager Dee when the film was later adapted into a television series. The Clueless television show ended in 1999, when Dash was 33.
17 Now: Stacey Dash (Dionne 'Dee' Davenport)
Stacey Dash continued acting after Clueless ended. She had a guest-starring role on the BET series The Game as Camille Rose. The actress later had a leading role on the VH1 drama series Single Ladies as Valerie 'Val' Stokes.
Stacey Dash eventually took a break from acting and became a political commentator on the Fox News Channel's Outnumbered. Her work as a political commentator eventually led the actress to a potential career in politics where she decided to run for congressional office in California back in 2018.
16 Then: Donald Faison (Murray)
Donald Faison's character, Murray Duvall, didn't have much of a significant role in the film version of Clueless, even though Murray was Dionne Davenport's beloved boyfriend. Murray would often do things that his girlfriend didn't quite approve of.
The scene where Murray shaved his head right before the yearbook pictures and he delivered the classic ‘keeping it real’ line was something that Donald Faison himself came up with while filming. Donald has stated that filming the Clueless movie was probably the most fun that he has ever had on set.
15 Now: Donald Faison (Murray)
After reprising his role of Murray Duvall in the series, Donald Faison moved on to other film and television gigs. He starred alongside Zach Braff in the comedy medical series Scrubs where he played Dr. Christopher Turk. Scrubs was on the air for nine seasons and was a hit among its many fans.
After the series ended, Donald Faison went on to do a little voice-over work on Cartoon Network’s animated show Robot Chicken, and most recently he starred in the TV Land series The Exes as Phil Chase.
14 Then: Elisa Donovan (Amber)
Elisa Donovan played Amber Marines, one of Cher Horowitz’s rivals in the film. Amber was also a fashionista, much like Cher and Dee. Amber was also known for her tell-it-like-it-is kind of persona. Clueless movie watchers could always count on Amber to speak her mind while wearing bold and extravagant outfits.
Clueless was one of Elisa Donovan's big chances to become a breakout star. It was Elisa’s first role in a major release film. She made people enjoy her character, and often they also wanted to wear her colorful outfits.
13 Now: Elisa Donovan (Amber)
Elisa Donovan reprised her role as Amber in the Clueless spinoff sitcom. Donovan also continued to expand her acting resume. In fact, you've probably seen her in quite a few shows and movies over the years. She went on to star as Morgan Cavanaugh in the Sabrina, the Teenage Witch ABC series as one of Sabrina's college roommates during the show’s last few seasons.
Elisa Donovan even starred in another famous and classic television show, Beverly Hills, 90210, in which she played Ginger LaMonica. Donovan also starred in the family-friendly film, The Dog Who Saved Christmas.
12 Then: Wallace Shawn (Mr. Hall)
Wallace Shawn played the high school teacher, Mr. Wendell Hall. Cher and Dionne would try to play matchmaker in the film for Mr. Hall, pairing him with one of their fellow teachers, Miss Toby Geist. It led to many funny moments!
Wallace Shawn already had a lengthy acting resume before taking on the role of the quirky school teacher. He was notably known for his role as Vizzini in The Princess Bride. During the same year that Clueless was released, Wallace Shawn's voice could be heard as the sometimes not so courageous toy, Rex, in Disney's Toy Story.
11 Now: Wallace Shawn (Mr. Hall)
Wallace Shawn continued his Mr. Hall role in the Clueless series for a couple of episodes while simultaneously starring in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as Zek. He continued his voice role as Rex in the two other Toy Story films. Shawn has also starred on the CW teen drama series Gossip Girl as Cyrus Rose.
At 75 years old, Wallace Shawn continues to put more acting gigs on his resume. He most recently starred as Dr. John Sturgis on Young Sheldon, had a guest-starring role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and will once again be playing Rex in the upcoming Toy Story 4 film!
10 Then: Paul Rudd (Josh)
Paul Rudd played Cher's former stepbrother, Josh, in the film. Although things didn’t work out between Josh’s mom and Cher’s dad, Josh still found a way to be around his former stepfamily and even carried on helping Cher’s dad, Mel, in the process.
Cher and Josh eventually began dating at the end of the film. Although Paul Rudd previously starred in the NBC series Sisters, Clueless helped shape his career in the late '90s as it was the actor’s first film. Since the movie became a staple in pop culture, he was instantly recognizable in future roles.
9 Now: Paul Rudd (Josh)
Paul Rudd has had a pretty stable and lengthy career since the release of Clueless. He has starred in popular films such as Anchorman, Night at the Museum, Role Models, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, just to name a few.
He's also had a few guest-starring roles in TV shows such as Friends, Veronica Mars, and Parks and Recreation. Fans can currently catch Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, also known as the Ant-Man, in various Marvel films such as Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Avengers: Endgame.
8 Then: Jeremy Sisto (Elton)
Jeremy Sisto was Elton in the film. Elton was the guy who Cher thought would be the perfect match for her friend, Tai, but instead Elton was far more interested in getting to know Cher. This led to many complications in Cher and Tai's friendship.
Jeremy Sisto, like most of his co-stars, was fairly new to acting when he landed his role in the movie. Sisto’s role as Elton helped the young actor generate a lot of recognition following Clueless’s release. The movie seems to have really paved the way for many of its actors to become Hollywood stars.
7 Now: Jeremy Sisto (Elton)
Following Jeremy Sisto’s performance as Elton in Clueless, the actor quickly began expanding his filmography. He did a little voice-over work for a few cartoons in the late '90s. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. Sisto also had a starring role in the HBO drama series Six Feet Under, in which he played Billy Chenowith. He’s also starred in the original Law & Order as Detective Cyrus Lupo and the ABC comedy series Suburgatory as George Altman.
His career is far from over! Currently, fans can catch Jeremy Sisto in the new CBS crime drama, FBI.
6 Then: Breckin Meyer (Travis)
Breckin Meyer’s character, Travis Birkenstock, was a pretty quirky individual in the movie. Although Travis was quite unpopular at the high school he attended, he definitely knew how to make the most out of bad situations and have a good time doing so.
Travis Birkenstock was an avid skater who was head-over-heels in love with Tai, played by the late Brittany Murphy. Throughout the film, Travis tried his best to win over Tai’s heart. Clueless was just the start of a few of the films in the '90s where Breckin Meyer had a small role.
5 Now: Breckin Meyer (Travis)
Breckin Meyer continued his Clueless success by starring in a wide variety of films and television shows. The actor starred as the beloved Jon Arbuckle in the live action movie version of Garfield and it was followed by a sequel. Meyer was a voice-over actor for the animated series King of the Hill, in which he played Dale Gribble’s son, Joseph Gribble.
Breckin Meyer continued to do animated work by starring in Cartoon Network's Adult Swim series Robot Chicken. Most recently, he had a role in the ABC political drama, Designated Survivor as Trey Kirkman.
4 Then: Dan Hedaya (Melvin 'Mel' Horowitz)
Dan Hedaya played Cher’s loving dad, Mel Horowitz. Dan was already an established and veteran actor in Hollywood before he took on the role of playing Cher’s dad in Clueless.
In the movie, Mel was a successful lawyer who would always give Cher the kind of love and advice she very much needed to help her get through her teenage high school woes.
Clueless producers were so sure that Dan would be right for the role that they hired him without first letting him audition for it. That was a great choice because Mel was one of the best movie dads of the '90s.
3 Now: Dan Hedaya (Melvin 'Mel' Horowitz)
Dan Hedaya didn’t reprise his role of Mel Horowitz in the Clueless spinoff. Instead, the actor had a consistent amount of television and film roles immediately following the release of Clueless. In just a year after the Clueless release, Dan starred in Marvin’s Room, The First Wives Club, and Ransom, just to name a few.
He also had a few guest-starring roles on TV shows such as ER, The Mindy Project, and Yes, Dear. Most recently, Dan Hedaya starred in the movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He just keeps going from strength to strength.
2 Then: Julie Brown (Coach Millie Stoeger)
Julie Brown was already a familiar face before she played Coach Millie Stoeger. She had minor roles in a lot of popular sitcoms from the early '80s, such as The Jeffersons and Happy Days. In Clueless, Coach Millie Stoeger took her job as a physical education instructor seriously. She always wanted her students to participate in physical activities, whether they wanted to or not.
Julie Brown’s background as a comedienne helped the actress give her character a hilarious sense of style, as well as quirky characteristics and memorable behavior that kept us in stitches.
1 Now: Julie Brown (Coach Millie Stoeger)
Julie Brown expanded her Clueless universe by working on the spinoff series. Brown not only starred in the series as Coach Millie Stoeger, but she also helped to write, produce, as well as direct, a couple of episodes. She's a really talented force in Hollywood!
Clueless aside, the actress has done voice-over work and has had a guest-starring role on the ABC comedy The Middle as Paula Norwood. Julie Brown has also co-written and starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie Camp Rock, alongside Demi Lovato and The Jonas Brothers. She starred as Dee La Duke in the film.
