The Australian Power-Trio: 21 Lesser-Known Facts About The Hemsworth Brothers

There are many siblings in the famed spotlight of Hollywood. Think about talented Ben and Casey Affleck, brothers who forged their own paths within the acting world. There are singers Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears. The two are years apart but found their own ways to make it in the spotlight. Think of the entire families that are famous... the Cyrus family with a country singing father and a bold and brave pop singing daughter, the Kardashian family with several successful entrepreneurs and reality television superstars, or the Hadid family that is full of successful models, actresses, and businesswomen.

Then, there are the ultra-sultry and talented Hemsworth brothers. You know Chris Hemsworth, 35, from The Avengers as Thor and from Star Trek (2009). You know his little brother, Liam, from his tumultuous relationship with Miley Cyrus, along with his acting career in movies like The Last Song and The Hunger Games. Liam, 28, currently has two new projects coming up, while Chris has three sequels in the queue along with a new movie coming out next year.

Below, we highlight twenty-one facts about their life and upbringing and how they came to be two of the most attractive and successful brothers on the planet!

21 There Is A Third Hemsworth Brother

We know Liam Hemsworth, the youngest Hemsworth, from his many popular roles, including ones in The Last Song, Independence Day: Resurgence, and the Hunger Games trilogy. He is also known for his tumultuous and back-and-forth relationship with now-fiancé Miley Cyrus, whom he was previously engaged to before splitting up in mid-2013. The two reconciled in late 2015, however, and are living a much different life than they did as a young couple in love.

You know Chris Hemsworth, the middle brother, from his famous character, Thor, which he has played in several movies including The Avengers, Doctor Strange, and Thor: Ragnarok. He is also married to fellow actress, Elsa Pataky, who has starred in movies like Fate of the Furious and Snakes on a Plane. The two share a daughter, India, together. But, did you know there was a third brother?

Luke Hemsworth is the oldest of the three, born in 1981, just two years before Chris was born and nine before little Liam came.

He is also an actor but is not nearly as much in the spotlight as his two little brothers. As you'll read later, Luke actually prefers it that way! He is also married with four daughters—Harper, Ella, Holly, and Alexandra—and currently lives in California.

20 Liam Did Not Go To College

Liam Hemsworth will turn 29 early next January, celebrating with his fiancé we are sure of. Here are a few tidbits about him...

Liam is 6 foot 3 inches, towering over fiancé Miley Cyrus by almost a foot. During high school, he often participated in high school plays, similar to his older brothers. He didn't move to the United States officially until 2009 to fully pursue an acting career. As of now, his net worth is at $16 million, which you will read more about later. (Can you guess which brother makes the most?) Another tidbit about his early life and education?

Surprisingly enough, Liam did not go to college! Ironically, his high school was called Newhaven College, which is where he participated in the plays as previously mentioned. At age seventeen, he began his acting career starring in Neighbours, which both of his older brothers also starred in, in the land down under. After this, he decided not to pursue college to focus on acting instead. He worked on movies like Knowing and Triangle. Just three years later, he nabbed the lead male role in The Last Song (2009), where he met his girlfriend and eventual fiancé Miley Cyrus.

19 Liam Would Get Picked On By His Older Brothers

This one shouldn't surprise any of us, really, because boys will be boys—and brothers will be brothers! It has been discussed in many interviews with the brothers that they didn't handle their little brother with gentle tenderness; that's for sure!  In an interview with Stephen Colbert, Liam had this to say:

"It was loving but mostly traumatic. They used to put me in the dryer a lot..."

"...They wouldn't put the heat on, but they'd put me in there and then (mimics the drum going round)." After some laughter, Colbert asked Liam if his parents knew these things were happening. Liam replied: "I think they (my parents) just turned a blind eye to that sort of thing . . . they were like, 'What are you going to do? They're going to do what they're going to do."

Further, they used to dress Liam up with many layers of clothing and then chase him around with air rifles, according to Buzzfeed. Things got so bad that, at one point, Chris had to live with other relatives while Liam and Luke stayed at their grandparents' house. Now since they are grown, however, the boys—err, men—have a lot less drama, but they still love to pick on each other... as you'll read later on!

18 Liam Always Fought Back, Though

As we previously discussed, Chris and Luke would often make fun of Liam, pick on him, and overall give him the redeeming title of 'little brother'. Liam states, however, that he and Chris fought much worse than Luke ever did with either of them—but more on that later. What shouldn't be surprising, however, is that Liam had no problem giving it right back to both of his brothers! When Liam was eight, sometime around his moments of learning how to surf, moving to Phillips Island, and more, Liam threw a throwing knife at Chris' head, stating that the handle hit him in the head (thankfully it wasn't the other end!).

In an interview with Conan O'Brien in 2012, Liam talks about how "punching someone in the face" was how they showed their love in his house while growing up. "It's how you really get to know someone," he continues. Further, he says he fought with Chris so badly that it came to be about anything, like one time it was regarding who was sitting in the front seat of the car! It was impossible for them to even stay together while their parents went away, too, with Chris having to stay with their uncle instead of their grandparents where Liam stayed. Another fight occurred in which their mother's finger even got broken while trying to break up Chris and Liam.

17 Each Brother Appeared On The Soap Opera, Neighbours (Yes, Even Luke)

March 18, 1985, the Australian soap opera, Neighbours, went on the air. According to IMDb, the soap opera is an: "Australian soap opera exploring the lives and relationships of the residents of Ramsay Street in Erinsborough." So what does this have to do about and/or with our Hemsworth brothers? Well, all three of the brothers have appeared on the show! Ironically, it was not at the same time, however.

The eldest brother, Luke, appeared in 13 episodes in 2001, according to Buzzfeed. Chris, the second brother, only appeared in one episode in 2002. Lastly, Liam appeared in over 20 episodes in 2007 at the young age of 17.

Liam played a paraplegic man that had a way with the ladies named Josh Taylor.

Isn't it ironic that they all appeared on the same soap opera in the land down under? I'll leave you with this quote from Liam about his reliance on his older brothers: "Most of the time, if I'm in a pickle, I'll call one of my brothers. They've usually got somewhat uplifting advice. One is six and a half years older and one is eight years older, so they've probably lived through whatever my problem is."

16 The Brothers' Mom Taught Liam In School...In Health Class, Talk About Awkward

Let's get realistic here... when we were younger, we probably learned about the birds and the bees from a variety of outlets, right? Think back to that time... Some of us learned things from our parents and the teachers at school that actually taught the class we had to take on it. Some of us even learn things from our friends at the lunch table. The Hemsworth brothers were probably no different, but they had a rather unique way of learning about it, especially Liam.

The Hemsworth mother, Leonie, probably taught all the brothers something about the birds and the bees. This sort of education is important, so important in fact, that we usually learn it with conversations at home, as well as with a few classes throughout our high school education. Liam, however, got a double dose—or maybe a triple dose—of it when he was in high school and it was in the most unfortunate way (or so he thinks!).

According to Buzzfeed, Leonie is a teacher. She teaches English and Health Education. So awkwardly enough, Liam had his mother as his teacher for Health Education! He describes the experience of that as awkward, among other things—and we do not blame him!

15 Despite Rumors Luke Loves Miley...

Rockstar, actress, and pop culture phenomenon Miley Cyrus has been dating our youngest brother Liam Hemsworth since they worked together on The Last Song in 2009. Cyrus played a girl, Ronnie, who was rebellious, emotional, and confused in many ways. Because of this, Ronnie was sent to the south to live with her father for the summer. There, she met Hemsworth's character, Will. Essentially, the two fall in love. Clearly, that was the case off-screen, too.

There were several rumors for a while that the Hemsworth family did not like Miley—and many of us believed that when the two called it quits in 2013.

Now, however, the two are back together and better than ever! When asked about Miley, our oldest brother Luke had a lot of kind words to say:

"Yeah, she’s great. She loves our kids, and our kids absolutely love her. She won our hearts. I find her really interesting. I find her very articulate, and years in maturity above her age. But at the same time, she’s very much like Liam. I think a lot of people don’t realize that they are really, really in love. They actually are a perfect match in a lot of ways."

14 ...And Loves Messing With Chris In All Things Parenting

We have shown throughout the article that the Hemsworth brothers really love to mess with each other. When it comes to parenting, it seems they are no different!

In 2012, Chris Hemsworth and his wife, actress Elsa Pataky, welcomed a little girl, India Rose. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Luke talks about how he messed with Chris, yet also helped him, when it came to all the new joys, trials and tribulations of parenting:

"I actually made him a little video on how to wrap her up so that she can’t get her arms out [of the blanket.] He had a bit of trouble with her — she’s a bit of a Houdini. So I made a little video of how we wrap up our baby, but he said she still escaped! As a parent, you go through a whole lot of really tough things, and you kind of want other parents to experience those tough things as payback — especially when it’s your brother. You need them to be awake half the night and realize all the complaining that I’ve done over the years about getting no sleep and having to deal with all the trials and tribulations. I actually try to give him a little advice as possible. Or lead him in the wrong direction — that’s a lot of fun too."

13 Liam Helped Chris Become A Vegan

According to Screenrant, Liam Hemsworth is a known vegan. He is also very heavily interested and dedicated to being an animal welfare advocate. Are we surprised about the vegan part? Just take a look at his slim physique and fit body!

It was the summer of 2015. Liam states that the more he learned about the mistreatment of animals, the more he realized he couldn't eat meat.

He states to Men's Fitness magazine, Liam states: "About six months ago I went and saw a nutritionist to do a blood-diet analysis. He basically told me, based on my blood type and all the other different little tests they do, that red meat was good for me, and I should eat a lot more red meat and various other foods. So I started doing that, and the more red meat I ate, the worse I felt." He says it was his co-star, Woody Harrelson, whom he met on the set of The Hunger Games, that convinced him to go vegan. Of his vegan diet, Liam says: "There are no negatives to eating like this. I feel nothing but positive, mentally and physically. I love it. I feel like it also has a kind of a domino effect on the rest of my life." He even convinced older brother, Chris, to try a plant-based diet!

12 Chris And Liam Worked For Luke Before Their Acting Careers

As many of us know, acting can be an incredibly tough business to be a part of. One minute you could be one of the most popular people on the planet because of your role in a popular movie. However, the next minute, there could be someone new to talk about, and people could kind of forget about your big time to shine. Luke Hemsworth knows this all too well, as when he was younger he had a hard time finding roles and building an acting career in Australia. Because he was concerned with his financial security, the eldest and wisest brother decided to start a flooring company. This saved his eventual marriage and family in a financial aspect.

Further, Chris and Liam were younger back then, too, and even worked for their older brother while still pursuing their acting careers down under. It proved to be helpful in the long run, financially helping each brother build their acting careers. Each one, on their own time, eventually moved to California full-time. Now, they all are in the acting world, but at least they know they have experience in other areas if ever something does not work out later on down the road.

11 Chris And Luke Taught Their Father And Liam How To Surf

Did you know that Chris and his older brother, Luke, taught their dad and their little brother how to surf? In fact, now, the entire family loves to surf when the brothers visit Australia or their parents visit the coast of California.

When Chris and Luke were younger, they learned first as they grew up on an island with beautiful waves, perfect for surfing.

Australia is actually known for surfing because there are so many beaches (it is an island itself, after all!). Craig Hemsworth, their father, decided to learn in order to keep an eye on the boys. The ocean can be a scary thing, but boys will be boys, and, as the Hemsworth brothers were, they tended to do things that were a little scary because it was exciting! Then, when Liam was about five, his older brothers taught him as well. Chris was just seven at the time, while Luke was almost fourteen. When asked about Melbourne and surfing, Chris had this to say: "I was born in Melbourne and spent a lot of time every weekend traveling with my dad down the coast. And he would stand on the beach and watch us surf, and if we were in trouble he would swim out and drag us back. And then he decided it was probably better if he learned to surf. And he did. And that was my childhood."

As mentioned earlier, now they all surf together during family get-togethers and visits!

10 Luke Loves That He's Not Easily Recognizable Like His Brothers

Luke, the oldest Hemsworth brother, started his acting career many years before his two younger brothers. Ironically, he is the least famous of the three these days. This isn't because he took a break and started his flooring company. It isn't because he started a family and now has four daughters, either.

Luke actually loves his acting career now. He has two movies in the queue while he currently stars on Westworld, a popular HBO show. In the recent years, he has also starred in Thor: Ragnarok, Hickok, The Reckoning, and The Anomaly. Despite his love for acting, Luke still cherishes his anonymity. What does this mean?

This means, despite being the least famous Hemsworth brother, he does not care that he isn't as noticed as his famous brothers.

Luke talked about it to The Daily Mail years ago: "I worry about the loss of anonymity, which is the one thing Chris and Liam would want back". Further, Luke thinks it is their height that adds to their incredible fame. He says, "They are both 6 foot 4, they're very recognizable, whereas I am a little shorter (5 foot 11) and can disappear into the crowd."

Either way, we can see why Luke cherishes that quiet life that doesn't require paparazzi following you around and every person in America talking about your love life.

9 Chris Almost Lost Out On His Famous Thor Part—To Liam

Two of the brothers were up for the part of Thor. Can you guess which two? That's right—Chris and Liam were both up for that part. Liam got a call back and was one of the four actors that were up for the role, while Chris did not. Somehow, however, Chris ended up snagging the role that would make him a household name. To Men's Health in 2017, Chris discusses the incident:

“I remember sitting in Vancouver, shooting Cabin in the Woods with Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon. Both of them were looking at the trades at this sort of top five guys for Thor and saying, 'Why aren't you in the mix here? What happened?' I said, 'I don't know. I blew my audition, I guess.' None of those guys got it. My manager then called up and said, 'You know, he's got an older brother. Can we bring him back in?' So I did an audition in Vancouver in this hotel room with my mum reading Anthony Hopkins' part. She must have nailed it because it got me back in the room and that second audition was a lot different than my first one. I came in kind of with a little, I guess, motivation and maybe frustration that my little brother had gotten further than me. It's a little family, sibling rivalry sort of kicked up in me. Then it moved pretty quickly from there. It was cool.”

We think everything happens for a reason!

8 Jennifer Lawrence Claims They're All Wild

In 2015, Jennifer Lawrence talked to US Weekly about her Hunger Games co-star Liam Hemsworth, whom she has grown to be very close with. This isn't too surprising considering the two are just eight months apart, both born in 1990 (Liam in January; Jennifer in August). Obviously, if you get close enough to someone, on movie sets or otherwise, you grow to learn more about their family, too. These two spent over four years together filming all four movies of their famous trilogy! So, it is no surprise that Lawrence has spent time with Hemsworth's family.

In her interview with US Weekly, Lawrence talks about the Hemsworth brothers, saying:

"His whole family, they're real animals. It's the craziest family I've been around in my life. The way that they communicate is so physical and crazy."

She went on to say that Liam and Chris have "weird antics' including eating one another scabs and growling at each other!

Further, Lawrence says her nickname for Liam is "Bear". We are guessing that is because he is big, burly, and gives really good hugs (we assume). She says she also regularly complains about his vegan lifestyle, stating it's pretty miserable to go out to dinner with him. It sounds like Jennifer and Liam are quite the best friend pair!

7 Chris' Net Worth Is The Highest

Let's take a look back at all three of the brothers' acting careers. This way, it will probably make sense that Chris has the highest net worth of all the brothers (hello, Thor).

We know Luke, our oldest brother, tried early on to start a career in Australia. He had a difficult time, though, so he started a flooring company instead, before jumping back into the acting pool. He is known for roles in Satisfaction, Neighbours, Tangle, and, most recently and most popularly, Westworld, on HBO. His net worth is about $3 million, according to Google.

Next up is middle brother Chris who started his career in small roles like Neighbours and Home And Away. In 2009, he snagged the role of George Kirk in Star Trek. From there, he appeared in Thor as the title character. From here, he has starred in plenty of spin-offs and different superhero action movies, including The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Doctor Strange. This role has made him the most popular and richest Hemsworth to date at $70 million.

Lastly, we know Liam has starred in The Last Song as well as The Hunger Games trilogy movies. Coming up, he has two projects. One will be a comedy while one is an action movie. His net worth according to Google is $16 million.

6 They Were Born In Melbourne, Victoria In Australia

The three brothers, who were all born in Australia, grew up in Melbourne, Victoria. As of 2016, over 4 million people reside there, making it the second largest metropolis area/city in Australia. In an interview with Stephen Colbert, Liam was asked if there were bugs everywhere, as that is how many Americans see Australia. It seems he agreed. Liam had this to say: "Lots of deadly snakes, lots of deadly spiders, big sharks, big crocodiles, and you know, you've got to fight your way through life." All kidding aside, Australia is known for the spiders, snakes, and crocodiles to be quite commonplace, either on the beach, on the sidewalk, or on the roads!

In 2016, Chris Hemsworth was named Australia's new global ambassador.

In New York City was the unveiling and many interviewers asked him about Australia. Here are a few tidbits of what he had to say regarding growing up in Melbourne:

"The first time I took my wife to Australia, we went to Victoria and spent most of the time inside. I was very sick. And she was like, "I don¹t get it, what¹s the big deal?" So I got better, and then I took her up the Great Ocean Road and she was swept away by the magic of the place."

5 They All Have Great Genes

Are we really surprised about this Hemsworth brother tidbit? They are all incredibly smart, talented, and successful in their own ways. Luke, despite being the least famous actor of the bunch, is knowledgeable in other business areas, is a supportive family man, and loves to support his brothers, too. Chris, our middle brother, is a confident man that married an older woman (Elsa is seven years older than Chris). He is a great father to his daughter and two sons, too. He is successful in his career due to his role as Thor and his wide range of capabilities in other movies such as The Cabin in the Woods and Ghostbusters. Lastly, Liam shows his success with his famous Hunger Games trilogy, however, despite his smaller net worth, he may be more popular than his older brothers due to his ever-famous fiancé Miley Cyrus.

Why the brothers have such good genes, we are not sure. It could be because of their upbringing in the Australian bush, the salt water that hits their face while they surf, or how much money they make to keep their family's safe and secure. Whatever the case, they are also very humble, which is something that makes us continue to love them even more!

4 They Lived On An Island

After Melbourne, the Hemsworth family decided to move to the Northern Territory for awhile. From there, they moved to Phillip Island in Victoria. Just to compare to Melbourne's 4 million residents, Phillip Island, as of 2011, had a population of a little over 9,000. The temperatures range from 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, which is a lot milder than Melbourne, which is known to have extreme weather.

The talented and attractive Hemsworth brothers often travel back to Phillips Island for some golf, some surfing, and some time with family and friends.

In 2010, Liam took on-again, off-again girlfriend Miley Cyrus to the big land down under. Apparently, the only food she liked was from a place called Dr. Food. Here is what Liam had to say to it: "The only thing she really liked there . . . was - we have this place called Dr. Food, which has these meat pies. They're like chicken pot pies but only with beef. On top of the meat pies was macaroni and cheese. They're pretty much the best thing ever." He said she also despised the popular Australian Vegemite meal and would pretty much only eat at Dr. Food the rest of the trip!

3 None Of Them Are The Same Zodiac Sign

This is an interesting topic to touch on, as none of the brothers share the same zodiac sign. Further, none of them share the same element of air, water, earth, and fire, either. This means they all have very different personalities.

Luke, the oldest brother, was born November 5, 1981. This makes him a Scorpio, a sensitive and emotional water sign. Scorpio men are passionate, kind, and very loving. They give their all to those closest to them. This makes sense due to many things we know about Luke, including his passion for surfing, his passion to work hard and provide for his family, and his loving nature with his 4 daughters.

Chris was born on August 11, 1983. This makes him a fire sign: Leo! The Leo men are incredibly driven, always wanting to be successful and continue their career paths in only an upward motion. Leo men also like to take charge and guide others. He sounds an awfully lot like his character, Thor!

Our youngest brother, Liam, was born January 13, 1990. Liam is a Capricorn, which is one of our three Earth signs! Capricorn men are very grounded and enjoy their routines. They don't like things messing up their routine or anything occurring that is unpredictable. Knowing this about him, it makes sense that he and Miley had a small break from each other before reconciling, right?

2 They Grew Up In The Australian Bush

Did you know that the Hemsworth brothers not only spent time living on an island, but they also grew up in the Australian bush? Yeah, we didn't know that either... we also weren't really sure what the Australian bush was, other than bushes in Australia. Curious to find out?

Well, according to wisegeek.com,

"The Bush is a part of Australia which is unsettled and undeveloped, but not as remote as the Outback, the huge stretch of rugged and arid land which fills much of the Australian continent..."

"...Many people have romantic associations with the Bush, including the Australians themselves, and the area has been popularized in art, music, and films which can be seen around the world. Many regions colonized by the English adopted the slang term “Bush” to talk about remote, unsettled areas. In many cases, the Bush was literally filled with bushes, along with native trees, and it served as a rich habitat for native plants and animals. In Australia, some people lived in the area, such as the aborigines, and some “bushrangers,” people who lived off the land in the Bush." So, essentially, the Hemsworth brothers grew up near the woods. They spent a lot of time outside, too. This upbringing actually inspired Chris' role in Snow White and the Huntsman.

1 Their Mom Used To Lock Up The Television

Some of us know that, as kids, we really just couldn't behave. Some of us were worse than others. Some of us were constantly grounded, losing the television or outside time with our friends. Some of us were rarely grounded, but super sad when we were because that meant we disappointed our parents.

The Hemsworth brothers had their television hidden for a different reason, though, and that was because sometimes, they just did not get outside enough. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in the summer of 2012, the oldest brother, Luke, says:

"We were crazy. We would spend time in the bush. Mom would say get out of the house, and we would just go. We had all sorts of large swings, and flying foxes and various death traps throughout the forest that we’d try and do our best to hurt ourselves on. It was a great childhood in terms of being creative, I think. Getting outside, getting out of the house. Mom would put the TV in the cupboard. She’d say, “That’s it. I’ve had enough. The TV is going in the wardrobe,” and she’d lock it up for three months."

We guess living in the 'bush' really let their brotherhood bond—and let their creativity flow!
