Dubbed “the most pinned color of the summer”, terracotta is having a moment right now. And all signs show that this summer’s obsession with delicious warm oranges, caramels and chocolate hues was just a friendly warm-up for the real showtime this fall.

Warm, earthy and oh so vintage-chic, terracotta is the ultimate autumn statement hue.

Who cares if your hard-earned summer tan has faded by then. While there’s no doubt that terracotta looks amazing on bronzed skin, its real potential lies in how timeless and expensive it looks. This is a color associated with high-end brands like Bottega Veneta, expensive leather, as well as chic appearances of fashion icons such as Victoria Beckham and Lily Collins (who moreover prove that it does look awesome on pale skin too).

Expect to see classy leather skirts, more polka dot dresses (yes, please!), silk button blouses, chunky knit sweaters, and 60's-inspired A-line skirts in all warm shades of terracotta.

If you’ve been paying some attention to fashion lately, you know well that there’s nothing impetuous about terracotta’s popularity. It is perfectly attuned to other recurring trends such as the rise of animal print, in particular, the leopard print, which, just to clarify, is meant to be classy and expensive-looking. A fashion staple, animal print will continue being a major trend in the winter just like terracotta. I bet that supermodel Kate Moss must be over the moon right now, as she has been rocking the animal print for years, even when nobody else dared to walk out in a leopard jacket.

Moreover, if anything, terracotta is a great compromise between the boldness of celebrity-endorsed bright yellow and the blandness of classic beige that the likes of royals love. It is Duchess of Sussex-esque, with a twist. Why didn’t anyone think about this before?

If you are one of those people who has a natural aversion to oranges and browns, don’t lose heart. Terracotta is a misunderstood, and inexplicably underused color. In reality, it’s nobler than orange, sexier than beige, and more sophisticated than chocolate brown. You only need to find the right shade and fabric that works for you.
