Strict Vs Lenient: 10 Soft Celeb Parents (+ 10 Who Run A Tight Ship)

Most of the time, regular, non-famous folks look at celebrity parents and think “well, they have it so easy” when, in fact, it couldn’t be further from the truth. Being a parent is a full-time job no matter how we spin it.

And it can be rather taxing if a parent also has a full-time job themselves, which is what most celebrity parents juggle, whether we like to admit or not.

And the way celeb parents juggle their brood is often criticized in the media. And for every lenient parent in Hollywood, there is a parent that is strict and runs a very tight ship. Most of us tend to scowl at lenient celebrity parents, since we forget what it is they tend to be juggling in that world, while praising the stricter parents. Truth be told, they’re all doing their best to raise their children within the public eye.

When the paparazzi are watching every single move you (and your family) make, it can't be easy to be either a strict parent or a lenient one. That said, here are 10 Hollywood celebrities that some people think are too light on their kids, and 10 who might be a tad too strict.

Big Ol' Softies

20 You Can Get Away With Everything If Will Smith And Jada Pinkett Smith Are Your Folks

Inside Edition

Considering how fun Will Smith always seemed to be (you’d know this if you’re a fan of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), it shouldn’t be too surprising that he and wife Jada Pinkett-Smith aren’t the most strict of parents. Their children, Willow and Jaden, have been all over social media with their opinions, more often than not talking about the most random things.

This could be just kids being kids if, you know, they weren’t the children of a super famous couple. And while others might classify Will and Jada’s parenting skillset as “lenient,” the couple themselves refer to it as being “unique.”

19 Kim Kardashian And Kayne West Believe Their Kids Are Royalty

You just knew that when Kim Kardashian and Kanye West announced that she was pregnant for the first time (with darling little North West), that THAT kid would get the finest of everything in life. But it also meant that not only would the child be spoiled, but she would also have her parents wrapped around her little finger. In fact, ALL the Kardashian-West children do (three, with a fourth on the way).

Kanye even said recently that his children are so spoiled that they don’t even get hand-me-down clothes. While Kim appears to be a loving mother who dotes on her children, she also seems like a bit of a pushover when it comes to them, too.

18 Katie Holmes Has Some Pushover Tendencies

While Katie Holmes insists on saying that daughter Suri isn’t spoiled in the least, Suri seems to have both her mother AND father (actor Tom Cruise) wrapped around her little finger. You can see in pictures that the ever-watchful paparazzi take that Suri is often strangely independent for someone so young.

It’s easy to see that Katie and her daughter are more like BFFs than mom and kid. Could this be because it’s rumored that Suri’s father hasn’t really seen her in years (according to US Weekly)? Maybe Holmes is trying to make up for the fact that Cruise hasn’t seen his daughter by being more of a friend than an authoritarian.

17 You Had To Know Caitlyn Jenner Would Be On This List

E! News

If you ever caught even a single episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, you’d know that both Caitlyn Jenner and Kris Jenner were major pushovers when it came to daughters Kendall and Kylie–especially when they were younger. Both daughters would swipe Caitlyn’s credit card and go ham at the sales and would more often than not get away with it.

If Kris ran a tight ship when the Kardashian girls were growing up, we sure didn’t see her cracking the whip on Caitlyn when she would spoil the girls, now did we? I guess that’s what happens when you’re brought up on camera.

16 Anyone Remember Mama June?

Splash News

Speaking of reality TV parents, who can forget the loud and eccentric life of Mama June in Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (which was a spin-off of TLC’s reality show Toddlers & Tiaras)? The show centered around Alana Thompson (a contestant from Toddlers & Tiaras) and her very colorful family, headed up by June Shannon, Alana’s, mom who was lovingly dubbed “Mama June.”

June was a stay-at-home mom who took care of her four daughters, who were practically all over the place and basically ran the entire show on their own as their mother did whatever she pleased. The show was eventually canceled due to controversy, but the memory of the wildness still lives on in our minds.

15 Christina Aguilera’s Littles Get Anything They Want

Harper's Bazaar

Apparently, some kids get away with whatever they want thanks to their parents making sure they don’t “influence” them too much. This is the case when it comes to singer Christina Aguilera's two children.

In an interview with Paper Magazine, the star said, “I don’t want to inject too much upon her (her daughter Summer) as to how I’m choosing to live my life and what I’ve done in my [work]. I just hope I can allow what I’m doing to influence her to be her own person. That’s what I truly hope for her. I really want to make sure my children are both very confident in the sense that they know who they are and that they won’t be easily swayed by outside opinion.”

14 It’s All Fun And Games With Chrissy Teigen And John Legend (Which Isn’t A Bad Thing)

If you’re familiar with model/author Chrissy Teigen’s IG feed, you know just how much she loves being a mom. The facetious model enjoys spoiling her two children with singer John Legend just as much as she enjoys messing playfully with her husband on social media.

It’s easy to see that Luna (the couple’s oldest child) and son Miles have both parents wrapped around their little fingers and could probably get away with almost everything. Both parents are extremely fun-loving and more often than not tell it like it is on social media. One thing is for sure for these little ones–they’re never going to be bored with Chrissy and John as parents.

13 Demi Moore And Bruce Willis’ Daughters Always Ran The Show

Back in the day, actress Demi Moore and actor Bruce Willis were the IT couple of the century. They had the fame, the money, and the beautiful family with their three daughters, Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah Willis. But as the girls started to grow and the duo ended up divorcing, seemed to fly off the rails and the kids started acting out in some pretty wild ways.

Both parents ended up pairing off with other people and the girls just ended up running wild while Demi and Bruce focused on their own lives. Everything seems to be running smoothly though these days with their adult children, but it was pretty touch and go there for a while.

12 When You’re The Son Of The GOAT Himself, It Doesn’t Matter What You Do

When you’re one of the children of the greatest basketball player to ever touch the hardwood, you can get away with pretty much everything under the sun. This was the mindset of Michael Jordan’s son Marcus, who went wild in his adolescent years and well into adulthood.

One of Michael's most famous acts (other than performing on the court) was when he turned and looked at his three children during his Hall of Fame induction speech in 2009 and said “You guys have a heavy burden. I wouldn’t want to be you guys if I had to.” None of his children followed in their Dad’s famous footsteps, and it’s sort of easy to see why.

11 There’s A Reason Why The Osbournes Had Their Own Show

It’s one thing to dismiss the squabbling of children when they call you a “bad parent” while growing up, but it’s an entirely different thing altogether when the parent says it. Rocker and legend Ozzy Osbourne has said this about himself in the past. Osbourne has five children total, three with wife Sharon Osbourne (Jack, Kelly, and Aimee) and two with Thelma Riley, who was his first wife.

Apparently, Ozzy has said that he was a bad father before with his first two children, Jessica and Louis, and tried to make up for it with his youngest children. “Just because he wasn’t a good father doesn’t mean he isn’t now a good father,” Jack once said. “And he regrets [a lot].”

Strictness Is Key

10 Who’d A Thought They Were So Tough? Ashton Kutcher And Mila Kunis

Business Insider

Hollywood always features celebrity parents who have unconventional ways of thinking and parenting that seem to clash at times. Especially with those parents who fall more on the stricter side of things. Take celeb parents Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, who don’t give their kiddos gifts for Christmas.

“So far, our tradition is no presents for the kids,” Mila once told Entertainment Magazine. “We’ve told our parents, ‘We’re begging you: if you have to give (them) something, pick one gift. Otherwise, we’d like to take a charitable donation, to the Children’s Hospital or a pet… Whatever you want.’ That’s our new tradition.”

9 Jessica Alba Is No Pushover Here

In a lot of different relationships, there seems to be one parent who is stricter than the other. Sort of a “good cop, bad cop” situation going. That’s what the case is when it comes to Jessica Alba’s marriage with Cash Warren and their three kids.

“I’m the disciplinarian,” she once said. “I think it’s because I was kind of a naughty kid myself – I’d push my parents’ buttons and test them to see how much I could get away with. Cash, meanwhile, was always the perfect kid – the straight-A student who was everyone’s sweetheart. It was never in him to be naughty. I think I just know, from me being that other kind of child, how to cut off bad behavior and redirect it.”

8 Julia Roberts Isn’t America’s Sweetheart In Her Household

E! News

Well, “sweetheart” as in “non-sweet tooth” to be exact. Apparently, candy is a big no-no in Julia Roberts' world and she can be pretty hardcore when it comes to her kids gorging on sugary goodness. “I’m a pretty strict mom when it comes to sweets,” Julia once told People magazine. “Even though I have such a sweet tooth myself. You want sweets, ice cream, and cake to be a great treat and a celebration. Something that’s not everyday. I think this makes them appreciate it when they do have it.”

She does make a good point. And she also makes a great case to have any dentist on the face of the planet fall head over heels in love with her.

7 You Need To Have Manners In The Beckham Household

In this day and age, extremely good manners feel like a superpower, especially when we don’t see them every day. However, in Victoria and David Beckham’s household, they’re a must and a given at all hours of the day and night. “They’ve got their own headed notepaper for thank-you letters,” Victoria once told People of her kids’ manners.

At the time of the interview, Posh Spice only had three sons, but now her family includes a daughter. “People are always remarking on how well-behaved the boys are. My mum and dad were real sticklers for good manners and so are me and David.” It also helps that Victoria isn’t fond of gossip and she makes sure her kids are the same way.

6 Even Though The Seas Are Rocky, The Pitt-Jolies Run A Tight Ship

When you have a ship as largely packed as the Pitt-Jolie household, you want to keep a firm hand over the kids, especially now that mom and dad are separated. This happens to be the case for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who have said to have been rather lenient in the past when it came to their kids. But now that the famous duo is separated, they realize that they need to discipline their children more.

In the past, Angelina was said to be the soft one, never really telling the children “no” while Brad, who was raised by conservative parents, was the one with the firm hand.

5 It’s J-Lo’s World And Her Kids Are Troopers For Living In It

We’re living in a technology age where even three-year-old children have their own iPads. Parents would rather hand off a tablet to their kids than sit down and do some arts and crafts–but hey, it’s a busy world. Jennifer Lopez is one of those parents who does NOT allow her children’s lives to be overrun by social media and technology.

Twins Max and Emme are only allowed to be on their iPads one day out of the week and she’s been enforcing that rule for a while now. That day is referred to as “Sunday Funday,” the singer says; “We sleep in, even the kids sleep in. And Sunday Funday, they work towards that because they don’t get to use their iPads during the week.”

4 You Wouldn’t Expect Less From Momma Gwyneth

When it comes to the face of GOOP, you’d expect momma Gwyneth Paltrow to run a tight ship when it comes to her kids with ex-husband Chris Martin. Paltrow is all about healthy living, so it should come as no shock to people that she actually refuses to let kids, Apple and Moses, watch television in their native language. Instead, they’re allowed to watch TV in either Spanish or French.

“When I’m in France, I go to [Boulevard] Beaumarchais and buy all their cartoons,” the actress once said when the children were still rather little. She also said that Apple didn’t take to this very keenly. Perhaps by now, they’re allowed to watch English television?

3 The Material Girl Herself Has A Strict Hand

You’d think that as wild as Madonna appeared to be in her younger years, she might be a little relaxed when it comes to raising her own children. But that’s a hard NO. Madge has six children she’s raising, so it makes sense for her to be rather strict.

Her rules include no cell phone use (they weren’t even allowed to have them until they hit a certain age), only eat macrobiotic foods, no TV whatsoever, don’t act like she did at their age (that famous “do as I say, not as I do” rule comes in handy in her house), only play with toys that are ethical, no serious relationships until they’re 18, and of course, cleanliness.

2 Routines Are Done Kate Winslet’s Way

Actress Kate Winslet used to look down upon moms who would often “lose control” of their kids (as she once had put it) because she herself ran things at a pretty strict rate in her own household. The Titanic star once said that she fears technology will lead to her children hitting a wall of problems as they age. At least, “unsupervised” technology.

In fact, she prefers her children to go old school when it comes to games and such. “Play Monopoly. These things are not rocket science,” she once said. “Do drawing games. If we go to the pub we always take paper and pen.” She believes by doing this, her kiddos won’t become addicted to technology.

1 No Technology Allowed In Bill Gates' House

Showbiz Post

Bill Gates is like most parents when it comes to being strict about technology in his household when it comes to his kids. But, then again, other parents are NOT Bill Gates, a technology pioneer and mogul. According to the Microsoft founder, his children were not allowed to have cell phones until they reached the age of 13.

Heck, he even monitors his kids’ social media (which, we agree, all parents should do until their kids reach a certain age), and makes sure they do all their chores. They even get a modest allowance despite their father being a billionaire.
