When you reach the top of the "A-list," you're already set for more roles, for more spotlight, more time on screen with more opportunities. Fame and fortune come naturally, but perhaps not as naturally as one would think. In fact, there are quite a few stars out there that have peaked only to the flop so hard, they just disappeared from the spotlight.

Today, we take a look at 20 of those stars that have peaked in fame & fortune, only to have their movies flop hard and fall from the top of the "A-list." Check them out below!

20 Jessica Simpson

When you think of Jessica Simpson, you think of her charming music career, right? Well, after she garnered quite a lot of fame in the music industry, she decided to venture into the movie industry. She got a lead role in Blonde Ambition, but the movie flopped in her home country, grossing just $1,771 in its opening weekend in eight Texas theaters. We haven't heard much from her ever since and she definitely lost the fame she had in the 00s.

19 Chris O'Donnell

Chris O'Donnell can be seen on TV in NCIS: Los Angeles, but he has long been kept away from the movie industry. Back in the 90s, however, he was getting quite a few roles in movies such as Scent Of A Woman & The Bachelor. It was in 1995, though, that he played Robin in Batman Forever and later in 1997's Batman & Robin.

Everyone hated it so much that Warner Bros cancelled any other plans they had to continue him in more movies. O'Donnell didn't appear in other movies for years after, only reappearing in 1999's Cookies Fortune. He has lately been focusing on TV.

18 Roberto Benigni

Roberto Benigni had his big break in the movie La Vita È Bella, a.k.a. Life is Beautiful, one that he wrote, directed and starred in, winning him the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1999, as well as Best Foreign Language Film. He ended up reaching fame not only in his home country, but all over the world! Everyone was wondering what his next step was, but when it actually came to the spotlight, we wish we had never asked.

He decided to play Pinocchio in a live adaption of the movie, bringing to life the little wooden boy, when he was actually 50 years old at the time. The movie flopped big time and Benigni's A-list days were over for years. We only heard again from him a decade later in Woody Allen's Italian-set To Rome with Love.

17 David Caruso

David Caruso rose to fame as the charming Detective John Kelly on NYPD Blue, a role that earned him instant A-list status. However, after just one season, he left the show for a movie career, but it didn't really work in his favor. In 1995, he starred in two crime thrillers: Kiss of Death and Jade. The movies didn't do that well and he didn't get another gig for two years, until we see them again in smaller, less-watched movies that flopped even harder. Finally, he decided it was time to leave his movie career behind and return to TV when CSI: Miami debuted in 2002. Right decision there, David Caruso.

16 Dana Carvey

Dana Carvey was a big star of late-night entertainment thanks to Saturday Night Live back in the 80s and 90s. He was shooting for the stars with a post-SNL career in bigger and better projects, but none of them really worked out for him. Clean Slate, Trapped in Paradise, The Dana Carvey Show, none of those took off and became something bigger for him, so he retreated and chose to raise his kids away from the big city.

He made one last attempt with the 2002 family comedy The Master of Disguise, but critics absolutely tore it to shreds. Ever since then, his movie career has been over and he only shows up in cameos or voice-overs.

15 Colleen Haskell

Colleen Haskell was one of the big names of the popular 2000s reality TV show Survivor, and she didn't even make it to the final four. She was young & attractive with a charming smile and that's what prompted her to answer a Hollywood calling. She starred in an episode of That 70's Show, but she also landed the romantic lead in the 2001 Rob Schneider's The Animal. The movie didn't do so well, as is typical of Rob Schneider's movies, and she never ventured into Hollywood again.

14 Armie Hammer

You must know Armie Hammer from Oscar-nominated Call Me by Your Name, but did you know his career didn't look so good just years before? While now he has been able to recover his career, 2013 told a different story. He starred alongside Johnny Depp in the racially insensitive casting for the ill-conceived reboot of The Lone Ranger. The movie was quite criticized and it didn't do as well as you'd think (it grossed $89 million, but it cost $215 million to produce). Hammer didn't get any acting gigs for years, only reaching success now.

13 Matthew Modine

In 1995, $98 million went into creating a good old-fashion pirate movie, starring none other than Matthew Modine. An actor that was recognized for a subtle dramatic demeanor, star of serious and grown-up movies, now was going to play in a pirate extravaganza. Cutthroat Island was so bad it barely grossed $10 million at the box office, and Carolco Pictures, the studio behind it, filed for bankruptcy in late 1995. Modine didn't venture into movies for another two years, and rightfully so. It takes time to recover from that.

12 Lori Petty

Lori Petty was charming and energetic in Tank Girl, the perfect project for this actress, but it just so happened the movie itself wasn't that good. Loathed by critics and completely disastrous at the box office, grossing only $4 million, it was all a big downhill from there with Lori Petty taking a break and trying to return in a short-lived Fox sitcom. It was only years later that she achieved true fame starring in Netflix's original Orange Is The New Black.

11 Madonna

Madonna may not have disappeared off the face of the Earth, but her acting career sure did. Madonna has starred in quite a few movies, such as A League of Their Own, Shanghai Surprise, Body of Evidence, The Next Best Thing, and Swept Away, but the very last one, back in 2002, didn't do so well for her. Swept Away grossed about $600,000 in the U.S, and earned Worst Picture, Worst Director, and Worst Actress at the Razzie Awards. Her marriage & acting career both ended up in the dumps, and she hasn't starred in a movie ever since.

10 Lance Bass

N'Sync member Lance Bass starred in the not-so-good movie On The Line!, where the plot leaves much to be desired. It's basically a fanfiction come to life, where a fan of a pop star ends up meeting said star and striking up a conversation. Lance Bass was the star of that movie, unfortunately for him, and although he brought a lot of charm to the role, that was his only starring role.

9 Lindsay Lohan

You must remember Lindsay Lohan, Hollywood's prodigy child turned rebel. She was a highly esteemed actress, ever since she was a child, starring in a number of successful movies. However, the spotlight began to shy away from her, especially when she started to star in horror movies. After I Know Who Killed Me released and reached a score of 9% on Rotten Tomatoes, Lindsay Lohan never knew fame quite like she used to.

8 Amanda Bynes

Once America's sweetheart, Amanda Bynes starred in movies such as She's The Man, Big Fat Liar, What A Girl Wants, and Lovewrecked. However, reality now is far from the fame she once had. It was in 2007 that Amanda Bynes starred in Sydney White, a movie about a girl that joined a fraternity filled with boys where they teach her how to conquer the love of her life. It's a boring movie and a far too cheesy one that didn't do so well among critics. Not even Amanda Bynes's charms could save her from that flop. Later on, she disappeared from the spotlight, only appearing in less-watched TV movies.

7 Freddie Prinze Jr.

Freddie Prinze Jr. was a heartthrob and a charmer of the 90s, even managing to steal the heart of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Geller. He starred in the live-action adaptations of Scooby-Doo, but when he tried to extend his career beyond those movies, it never worked out for him as much as the Scooby-Doo films. He even turned to television guest appearances, but he never reached the fame of leading box office status.

6 Shirley Temple

We're taking a journey back in time to take a look at one of the vintage princesses of the 30s and 40s: Shirley Temple. She was a charming actress who started pretty early, back when she was just a child. In the 30s, she was one of the actresses who brought in the biggest box office draws. It was back in the 50s, however, that A Kiss For Corliss, a total movie flop, led to her retirement from a promising movie career.

5 Taylor Momsen

Taylor Momsen was best known from her role on Gossip Girl, a quite popular TV show that pushed her to stardom. She attempted a movie career after that but was met with a string of box office flops, such as the movie adaptation of Underdog, which turned out to be quite bad and forgettable. She has retired from film ever since.

4 Jonathan Taylor Thomas

Jonathan Taylor Thomas was one of the big heartthrobs of the 90s, appearing on covers of teen magazines and starring in TV shows alongside incredible actors of the time. However, when he attempted to go for a movie career, it didn't work so well. Known at the time as JTT, he starred in I'll Be Home For Christmas, a holiday-themed modern-day Disney movie. It flopped and Jonathan retired shortly after.

3 Schuyler Fisk

Schuyler Fisk is no stranger to fame and the spotlight, being the daughter of Sissy Spacek, and she has been in quite a few movies herself. She appeared in I'm Reed Fish, a big movie flop where she had a chance to unleash another true passion of hers, music, in a singing scene. She took a long hiatus from her movie career to focus on music but in 2011, she returned for the movie Restless, another one that didn't do so well.

2 Sean Connery

It's strange to see Sean Connery, a true movie legend, on this list, but the truth is, his career quickly disappeared after one or two movie flops. Most specifically, Guardian Of The Highlands, an animated movie he was involved in, just as bizarre and unexpected as the retirement that soon followed the flop it was. We're still not quite sure how an animated movie flop would lead to a Hollywood's legend retirement, but perhaps it was for the best. We wouldn't want any more flops to stain his portfolio.

1 Meg Ryan

In the 90s, it was all about the beautiful and charming Meg Ryan, the leading lady of several romantic comedies. However, back in 2009, Serious Moonlight hit the box office and it was clear that it was going to be nothing more than a flop. It grossed no more than $11,000 over the first weekend on the big screen and received poor reviews. Ever since then, we haven't seen her in any more leads, only showing up in Ithaca in 2016– but that didn't do so well either.
