Tattoos are forever and it’s generally considered an unwise decision to get a matching tattoo with someone we’re dating, engaged to, or even married to. After all, that 50% divorce rate isn’t exactly encouraging. Friendship, on the other hand, seems to be able to weather more storms, so perhaps it’s safer to get shared ink with our BFFs instead of with a SO.
Evidently, celebs feel the same way! While many stars have gotten ink in honor of a significant other (looking at you, Pete Davidson), they’ve had to resort to expensive cover-ups or painful removals after the inevitable demise of their relationship. Friendship tattoos, however, seem to have more longevity.
These tattoos are either inside jokes, memories of lifetime friendships, or done to symbolize the end of a long project worked on together. These tiny matching tattoos have been inked on best friends, coworkers, and relatives, and some are pretty silly while others seem to have a much deeper meaning.
Couple tattoos are cool and all (albeit frequently irresponsible and short-sighted), but if you’re single or just seriously into commemorating a long friendship or something important in your shared lives, BFF tattoos are definitely the way to go.
Lady Gaga has got a lot of ink on her body, in various styles and with different meanings, but it seems that only one of them was done to match another person’s tattoo.
The trumpet located on her right bicep was done in 2014 with longtime friend and jazz musician Brian Newman. The original artwork was actually drawn by longtime collaborator and friend Tony Bennett and, since Newman had worked on the album alongside the two of them, he opted to get the same instrument inked permanently on his body.
In fact, if you look closely you can see that Bennett (who is also an accomplished painter) even signed his drawing “Bennedetto”!
Another lady who is no stranger to getting inked dozens of times, Miley Cyrus pops up more than once on this list!
The singer got this ink at a house party in 2014, in memory of her late dog, Floyd, who was reportedly the victim of a coyote attack. The tattoo, located on her ribcage, features a sketch of Floyd with a speech bubble reading, “With a little help from my fwends,” which is a Beatles song lyric. Along for the fun were musical friend, collaborator, and Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne and his wife Katy, both of whom got their designs in the exact same spot!
Being part of the Marvel universe must feel like some exclusive club, and the core members just upped the stakes on what it takes to get in.
In May of 2018, the original six actors – Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) – all decided to commemorate their elite squad status with something permanent. The result was a minimalist version of the Avengers logo, with the “A” and the “6” intertwined.
Johansson and Evans got their ink done in New York while the rest of the cast flew artist Josh Lord out to LA to complete theirs.
No, those little squiggly guys aren’t sideways balloons – they’re that other thing you’re thinking of! Years ago, singer and actress Mandy Moore got her tiny tattoo inked on her foot, along with all of her bandmates, as part of a silly inside joke. However, what Moore hadn’t anticipated was that, when it comes to her acting gigs, her stunt double will have to wear the ink, too!
In an IG post from 2015, Moore posted the above photo with the caption, “That moment when you realize the silly joke tattoo you got with your band 8 years ago means that your sweet stunt double has to have it drawn on too…” before adding the hashtag #babiesonmyfeet!
Now two seasons in, the controversial show 13 Reasons Why was just starting when producer Selena Gomez decided to get inked in commemoration of the project, along with cast members Tommy Dorfman and Alisha Boe.
In honor of the subject matter of the show – which has since been issued with a warning label on Netflix – the three got matching semicolon tattoos. The little bit of punctuation is used as a symbol for those battling depression or mental illness. It conveys the message that one’s life doesn’t end because of these issues; they're just a small part in what is meant to be a much longer sentence.
Sometimes you meet your best friends in odd places, and other times you meet them through your significant others. The latter was the case for Miley Cyrus and Elsa Pataky, who are sisters-in-law as well as BFFs, thanks to hubbies Liam and Chris Hemsworth!
After officially rekindling her romance with Liam in 2016, Cyrus reconnected with Pataky and they got tattoos to really show the strength of their relationship. The tiny little waves were drawn by pro surfer Kelly Slater, and were also tattooed on two other friends. They say that sometimes your best friends become like family, and in Pataky and Cyrus’s case, they became literal family!
Like some other people on this list, Selena Gomez didn’t stop with one matching tattoo. This past summer, the actress and singer got matching tattoos with three of her friends, a tiny number “4” on her arm. The same night, she also got a matching number “1” on her ribcage with BFF Courtney Barry, who she called an “incredible woman” and “an amazing friend.”
According to Gomez’s IG caption, the “4” is meant to symbolize the unity of all four of the women who will be in her life “4-ever.” It’s a sweet and tiny tribute that each girl got in different places: Barry and Ashley Cook opted for their ankles, while Raquelle Stevens chose her hip.
Cara Delevingne must have a lot of friends to get as many matching tattoos as she has, but this is her first time on our list. In 2014, the model along with singer Alexander DeLeon got the Roman numerals for “12” inked on their bodies – Delevingne’s on her ribcage, DeLeon’s on his forearm.
There doesn’t seem to be much of a story behind why they got these tattoos together or what they mean, beyond the model posting on her IG caption of this photo that “12 is a magic number,” which seems as good a reason as any when you have almost two dozen tattoos, right?
Sometimes there’s a time in your life that is so monumental, it changes the course of your life forever. That was what happened to Game of Thrones costars Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams, who have been best friends since day one of playing the Stark girls. They got a tattoo that says as much.
The tattoos – which read the date of 07.08.09 – on their inner arms is when they officially booked their gigs on the HBO show and, according to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the day the two met. Turner, explaining the ink, said, “That date always meant a lot to us and we always said we were gonna get it done.”
Their friendship may be falling apart at the moment, but there was once a time when Kylie Jenner and Jordyn Woods were so tight that they decided to celebrate their friendship with matching tattoos.
Back in 2016, both women got the letter “m” inked in red ink on the inside of their pinky fingers. However, the way it’s done makes it look more like a squiggle, don’t you think? While neither have addressed the speculation as to the meaning behind it, Jenner does have a lot of other tiny red tattoos located elsewhere on her body, so it seems she took the lead on this one, too! We're thinking Kylie is probably regretting the tattoo right about now.
Macaulay Culkin and Paris Jackson might seem like an unlikely pair, until you remember that Culkin was a longtime friend of Jackson’s father Michael, and is actually her godfather! And what better way to solidify that bond than with shared tattoos of spoons?
In the summer of 2017, the friends got inked in West Hollywood and, while neither have ever addressed the meaning behind the matching utensils, spoons are often used as a symbol for those dealing with a chronic illness.
That is, you are given a set number of spoons per day, and daily tasks use more spoons, so which tasks are you able to do with your limited reserves?
Not everyone is so lucky as to have a giant group of friends with whom to share a tattoo, but these ladies do! On the very last day of filming Pretty Little Liars in 2016, the six main stars (Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario, Sasha Pieterse, and Janel Parrish) all got the initials of their characters’ first names inked on their index fingers.
Despite all the secrets and lies that happened on-screen, it seems as though the six actresses made a pretty tight bond IRL. Not only were the tattoos an homage to their characters, but the placement is important, too: it echoes the series’ main credits! Shhh!
When you imagine two celebrities as BFFs, would Cara Delevingne and Kelly Osbourne ever cross your mind? Probably not, which is why we were so surprised to learn that these two Brits have matching tats!
In 2014, Osbourne shared a photo of their tattoos to IG – she has a filled-in red heart on her pinky finger, while the model has the outline in the same spot with the caption, “So happy that my bubba is in town even if it is just for a night!” These two may be in the habit of making pinky promises to solidify their friendship, but we bet these tattoos make that bond even more unbreakable.
Speaking of hearts, supermodels Kendall Jenner and Hailey Baldwin decided to go with the broken version for their matching tattoos in 2016. On the sides of their middle fingers, each got a broken heart – Jenner’s is in white ink, while Baldwin’s is in red. (On Jenner’s other finger she has a full heart, which she says represents her “angel side,” while the broken one is her “devil.”)
This actually isn’t the only shared tattoo Jenner has, either! Prior to getting the heart, the model had only a tiny white dot on the inside of her middle finger, which she shared with photographer friend Joe Termini.
Cara Delevingne strikes again, showing that she has a lot of love to give and friendship to share. This time, she opted to share a tat with fellow model Jourdan Dunn.
In 2014, the models got matching tattoos in honor of the first letter of their last names, each in the same spot on their hips. Rather than simply announce the decision on IG, these two actually opted to film the entire thing for Jay-Z’s website Life + Times, on Dunn’s cooking show Well Dunn.
To cope with the pain, the women sang various songs, including “A Whole New World,” “Kumbaya,” and “God Save The Queen!”
Hailey Baldwin has a lot of tiny tattoos on her body – and a few that match those of other models in her squad! Baldwin and her friend (and fellow model) Marianne Fonseca both got the word “gente” inked on their bodies back in 2016: Baldwin’s tatt is on her hip and Fonseca’s is on her ribcage.
The word means “people” in Portuguese and is meant to represent their shared Brazilian heritage. It’s not the only foreign language Baldwin has tattooed on herself, either: she has “Coeur d’Alene” on her back (French).
How’s this for a random friendship pairing? Disney darling Hilary Duff is actually BFFs with Alanna Masterson, who we probably best know as Tara on The Walking Dead. In 2014, they decided to take their over-a-decade-long friendship to the next level by getting inked with matching tattoos: cute little ghosts with the words “ride or die” at the hems of their cloaks.
However, while this is definitely the cutest and arguably most original tattoo on this list of shared ink, it’s not the first for the lifetime BFFs! Prior to this little spirit, both women got tiny hearts on their wrists!
We can find friends within our family, but for some family members, it’s best friendship that’s in the cards. Such was the case for the Baldwin cousins, Hailey and Ireland, who are both models in their own right with very famous fathers. Naturally, it makes sense that they would want to celebrate their familial bond, and getting a tattoo seems like a good way to do it!
The famous cousins got matching tattoos on their middle fingers of their name “Baldwin,” all lowercase and in a pretty script. The tattoo was done by Hailey’s artist of choice, Jon Boy, who has done a number of her tiny tats.
Back in 2015, Modern Family actress decided to get inked with a couple of her friends – including ex-boyfriend Dominic Sherwood. In fact, they all decided to get matching arrow tattoos, with slight variations.
Hyland’s arrow is located in the center of her upper back and features a detailed feathered fletching (tail). Friend Stephanie Branco got hers on the back of her forearm, with a more graphic look and an eye in the center, while ex Sherwood’s matching tat is on his bicep and features a dreamcatcher-like design in its center.
We're thinking Sarah might be regretting the matching tattoo, since she's now in a relationship with Wells Adams.
Back in the first half of the 2000s, there wasn’t anywhere you could go without hearing about the massive Lord of the Ring franchise. The series was filmed all in one go, meaning that we were given one lengthy film per year for three years in a row. We imagine that all that extensive work made the cast and crew pretty close – so close, in fact, that they decided to get a tattoo to commemorate the experience!
Eight cast members of the film (and one stunt double) got the word “nine” in Elvish inked on them, to symbolize the nine members of the fellowship of the ring. (Only Jonathan Rhys-Davies declined.)
