CBD-infused products are taking the cosmetics industry by storm. CBD, a non-psychoactive compound found in hemp and marijuana, has recently been added to products carried by major retailers such as Sephora, Barneys and Neiman Marcus.,
According to Erinn Murphy, a senior research analyst at Piper Jaffray, "This week at Sephora, we noticed a curated section in-store for hemp-oriented products featuring brands that have dipped their toe into this space. We have seen a high level of interest in cannabis beauty from retailers over the past month based on our store checks and incremental launches. We expect further retailer developments in the coming months."
Companies that feature CBD-infused products include Estée Lauder, e.l.f. Beauty and Ulta Beauty. In addition, Barneys announced last week that it will stock luxury cannabis accessories including several CBD beauty products in a Beverly Hills, California, location in March. Neiman Marcus also said it will begin featuring a selection of CBD beauty products online and in five stores.
CBD hemp oil is sourced from hemp with lower levels of THC than marijuana and high levels of CBD. It's a rich source of fatty acids and other nutrients that are beneficial to skin, says Francesca Fusco, MD, a dermatologist based in New York City. Studies show that CBD can increase barrier function, improve hydration, minimize moisture loss, and reduce inflammation.
CBD has also been shown to regulate cell growth, diminish inflammation, and stimulate fats in the skin and sebaceous glands. These properties may be effective against skin issues, such as dry skin, psoriasis, and eczema.
Since many skin problems are due to inflammation, the anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD oil are particularly important since "the primary receptor for CBD (CB2) is found on immune cells," which is where inflammation takes place, says Adam Friedman, MD, a dermatologist in Washington D.C.
There are several CBD skincare products available that address a range of skin conditions. CBD for Life Pure CBD Hand and Body Massage Lotion ($22; cbdlife.us) is ideal for dryness. Mad Hippie Antioxidant Facial Oil ($25; amazon.com) contains hemp seed extract, which contributes to a healthy glow along with ingredients like argan oil and vitamin E.

Kiehl's carries Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil Herbal Concentrate to help fight skin imperfections like redness ($49; kiehls.com), and Lord Jones Pure CBD Pain & Wellness Formula Body Lotion provides relief for sore muscles ($50; sephora.com). Makeup products, such as Milk Makeup KUSH High Volume Mascara ($24; sephora.com), also feature CBD since cannabis is rich in omega fatty acids, making it a super conditioning ingredient in mascara.
