In response to recent hateful Instagram comments, Selena Gomez arrived at a New York Fashion Week show wearing the insults she received with pride—literally. Gomez accessorized her fashion week outfit with a bejeweled hair clip that spelled out “UGLY.” The small but very powerful statement was said to be directed at Dolce & Gabbana’s Stefano Gabbana, who left a nasty comment on a photo of Gomez a few months ago.

Back in June, Instagram account The Catwalk Italia (@thecatwalkitalia) posted a collage of Gomez wearing five different red dresses. The caption read, “#selenagomez rocks red dresses <3 Choose your fave: 1,2,3,4, or 5?” Gabbana, the 55-year-old designer and one half of Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana, left a comment on the photo in Italian: “È proprio brutta!” This roughly translates to, “She’s really ugly!” According to Cosmopolitan, Gabbana also responded “hahahaha is true hahahaha” to a commenter on the same photo who said that Gomez “looks like a Pomeranian dog.”

He followed up on his comments later in the month by screenshotting the original post and mocking #PleaseSaySorryToSelena on his Instagram story. Fans of Gomez were outraged by his actions and took to their own social media accounts to share their thoughts. Gomez, on the other hand, has remained quiet about the issue, until now. In an interview with Footwear News, the singer said that she often doesn’t acknowledge hateful comments, but she does still see them. “It’s all about how you feel at the end of the day. That’s my approach to myself — seeing it’s not okay that I’m not accepted, that I’m different from anybody else,” she said.

Gomez was photographed entering a restaurant during New York Fashion Week on Tuesday wearing red plaid pants, a black top, and a leather jacket with a blue fur-like collar. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail with a braided middle part. The iconic hair piece was positioned boldly on the left side of her hairdo. According to InStyle, the clip was made by London designer Ashley Williams, who has a collection of pins that say things like “Girls,” “Boys,” and “100%.”

Gabbana has a history of being a bit of an Instagram troll. He has feuded with Miley Cyrus and her brother, Braison, before. The feud began when Miley said she disagreed with his political views and ended with Gabbana banning Miley and Braison from working with Dolce & Gabbana again. Gabbana also made controversial arguments against in vitro fertilization and gay parenting. Many decided to boycott the brand, but Gabbana responded simply by creating #BoycottDolceGabbana shirts.
