In a world where orange shades of brow pencils scarcely exist, what is a red-haired makeup artist to do? According to Reddit, the answer to this age-old problem can be found with lip products. Beauty lovers in the MakeupAddicts subreddit suggested using lip liners as substitute brow pencils, and the redheads of the world are loving this hack.
Despite brands like Fenty Beauty making efforts to be more inclusive with their range of shades, redheads are still having trouble finding makeup that will match their brows to their hair color. When Reddit user rilayaslace asked for brow pencil suggestions after dying her hair auburn, natural redheads revealed that they’ve often turned to alternative products to get the right color.
“I dyed my hair red too, my hair is almost naturally black. I use a lip pencil and set it with the clear [Anastasia Beverly Hills] brow gel,” said user kickynikki.
User koz-j shared her success with using eyeshadows as brow colors. “Don’t forget about using shadows,” she said. “MAC’s ‘Cork’ used to be a go-to for me to shade in my brows before I ventured into pencils and pomades. You can get a MAC pro-palette shadow for $6.”

It is true that many makeup brands offer more lip pencil colors than brow pencil colors. Some brands do not carry any red-orange brow shades at all. MAC Cosmetics, for example, offers only eight shades of black, tan, and brown in their Eye Brows Styler ($19). MAC’s Lip Pencil ($18), on the other hand, comes in 37 shades of red, brown, pink, tan, purple, gray, and black.
Anastasia Beverly Hills (ABH) seemed to be the best option among red-haired beauty lovers, as many users in the subreddit suggested ABH brow pencils in the Auburn and Caramel shades. Even so, the redhead-friendly ABH brow shades are still sometimes no match for fiery hair tones. According to Reddit, when using lip liner or eyeshadow as a brow color, the ABH Clear Brow Gel ($22) is a must-have for making the color last all day.
Users in the r/MakeupAddicts thread also suggested looking through ColourPop’s Precision Pencils line to find the perfect brow shade for red hair. Alternatively, as koz-j pointed out, eyebrow tinting done by an esthetician or stylist is also a more semi-permanent option. The tint can be customized for a perfect match without adding layers and layers of makeup to your brows. For the best results, ask your stylist to add dye to your brows during your hair color appointment.
