Ralph Lauren is the first American designer to receive British Knighthood, and no one is more deserving.

Women's Wear Daily was the first to report the news that Lauren has received the Honorary United Kingdom Knighthood for his services and contributions to the fashion industry. The 79-year old's official title will be "Honorary Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire". However, he will likely be referred to as Ralph Lauren KBE.

Next year there will be a ceremony to confirm his knighthood. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will have a representative present the designer with his honorary knighthood insignia at the ceremony. It is unclear if the Queen or any other member from the Royal family will be on hand for the honor.

The reason the iconic fashion designer was chosen for the high British honor is that of his contribution to the fashion connection between America and the United Kingdom. Lauren has created a global brand but is also a visionary that is admired by those across the world.

He is best known for his work in fashion, but it is his philanthropic side that also earned him the knighthood. In the five decades that he has been in business, Lauren has always given back. Public health and cancer research are top priorities for him and not just in the United States. He has been an advocate for both in the United Kingdom as well. His latest philanthropic venture was opening The Ralph Lauren Centre for Breast Cancer Research at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

The new honor comes along during an extraordinary year for the designer. Ralph Lauren is celebrating 50-years in the fashion world. He celebrated his achievement by fulfilling a life-long dream of throwing out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium this past September.

Congrats to Lauren on his Honorary British Knighthood. He now is in good company with the honor. Many former leaders of the United States have all been given the same recognition for their various contributions to history and relationship with the United Kingdom. It is quite an honor!
