It may be almost 90 degrees out but that doesn’t mean most of us aren’t in fall mode. However, not at all things fall have to be about cool weather and falling leaves, we can also enjoy some summer favorites with an autumn twist, like the new Pumpkin Spice Latte Ice Cream from Enlightened.

The ice-cream brand, which has just launched its Barista Collection, doesn’t make us choose between the seasons. We can still sit by the seaside but also enjoy a fall-flavored treat. The Pumpkin Spice Latte Ice Cream, luckily only has 60 calories per serving, so you don’t need to say sayonara to your slimmed-down summer self just yet.

The Barista Collection, which is high in protein and fiber, but low in sugar, calories, and fat, also includes White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha, made with coffee ice cream, a chocolate mint swirl and white chocolate chips, and Triple Shot Espresso, a "bold trio" of coffee ice cream, espresso chips, and ribbons of espresso. And for those not wanting to let go of summer, Enlightened offers Sea Salt Caramel Ice Cream or S'mores Ice Cream.

The company, which was founded in New York City in 2013, first featured ice cream bars, but once they tasted success, they expanded their selection to include pints.

According to the company, "Whether you like, love, or are totally obsessed with it, you can’t deny that coffee is a huge part of daily life! It brings us together for early morning meetings, first dates, late-night study sessions, and post-dinner conversations that keep you lingering just a little while longer. Since we’re an NYC-based company filled with proud coffee enthusiasts, the decision to create a seasonal, coffee-based flavor collection pretty much made itself."

Enlightened is what is known as a protein ice cream because it uses skim milk in production, while typical ice cream brands use cream. Skim milk and protein powder add up to around 5 grams of protein for the average half-cup serving size, which compares to 3 to 4 grams for traditional ice cream. Aside from protein, Enlightened, for example, also provides 20% of your daily fiber in a single serving and only 5 grams of sugar.

According to Keri Gans, a registered dietitian in New York City, however, ice cream is still ice cream. “No one should eat a whole pint of ice cream. We should be sitting down to the recommended serving, which is half a cup. If you want to double it, fine, but you shouldn’t sit down to a pint,” she says, adding that people should not prioritize getting protein from their dessert since most of us do not need extra protein.

Enlightened is sold at Wegmans, Kroger, Publix, Safeway, Whole Foods and Stop & Shop, among others. By signing up for the Enlightened newsletter online, you can receive a coupon for $1 off any 2 ice cream items.
