20 Photos The How I Met Your Mother Cast Wishes They Could Take Back

Forget Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, and the cast of Friends. When How I Met Your Mother made its debut in 2005 (running for nine years thereafter), a new group of famous faces took the TV world by storm and their names were Robin Scherbatsky, Barney Stinson, Marshall Eriksen, Lily Aldrin, and Ted Moseby – played by Cobie Smulders, Niel Patrick Harris, Jason Segel, Alyson Hannigan, and Josh Radnor respectively.

After watching the characters for nearly a decade, we became accustomed with certain personas, developing clear associations between the characters and their actors – NPH was a blond-haired womanizer, Josh Radnor usually sported well-maintained scruff, and Jason Segal never wore a bandana (you'll see what we mean).

So, when we see them in the real world, caught at embarrassing moments or at awkward stages in their lives, it can be a little confusing.

If we came to learn one thing at all about Robin during the hundreds of episodes we saw her in, it's that she can eat enough to feed an entire family. This behind-the-scenes shot is proof of just that, as she pours far too much BBQ sauce onto a slice on pizza. If only we all shared that metabolism.

19 Half Caveman, Half Bikie

Alright, Josh, please, tell us what you were thinking here because we simply can't wrap our heads around it. On the one hand, it looks like you've just emerged from a hidden cave after five months of surprisingly groomed exile. On the other hand, it looks like you're auditioning to be top dog in the Hell's Angels.

After seeing Neil Patrick Harris – an extremely talented actor – play the blond-haired womanizer, Barney Stinson, for seasons on end, it comes across as a bit of a shock to see his mop so dark. That aside, for whatever reason, he's looking tired and disheveled – not the best look for our beloved NPH.

Okay, we take that back – we'd much rather see Neil Patrick Harris with tired eyes and a head of black hair that a shiny, bowling-ball noggin instead. The Hollywood star needed to shave it all off in preparation for the role of Count Olaf in Netflix’s adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Let's forget about the fact that this photo might have had a little bit of a touch-up and instead focus on the fact that it exists, regardless of how that came to be. After forming a reputable portfolio with countless film and TV appearances over the years, Alyson Hannigan would likely prefer not to be considered a diner waitress.

To the devoted HIMYM viewers, despite turning 30 during the show, Lily was always a symbol of youth. Her idiosyncrasies were often childish, and we always thought that she looked much younger than her actual age. In this photo, however, we're starting to see Alyson develop signs of age, and she wouldn't be overly proud of that.

14 Crazy Hair, Don't Care

Rocking a perm is one thing, and sporting the bangs look is another. For Cobie Smulders, it seemed to be a case of 'why not have both?' The actress behind our Canadian Robin Scherbatsky fully embraced her Robin Sparkles ensemble. Although, in hindsight, she probably regrets it.

Back in 2017, Cobie Smulders made the visit to the so-called "Happiest Place on Earth" with her other half, American actor, comedian, and writer, Taran Killam. The pair was vacationing in between shooting various projects and thought it would be a great idea to snap this tacky photo with Goofy.

12 Jason Segel: Goldfish Edition

Funnyman Jason Segel, the genius behind Marshall Eriksen, does not have a Dwayne Johnson body or a Zac Efron pretty-boy face, but that's why we love him. In fact, we love him a little more for taking this wacky photo with a jumpsuit and a couple of goldfish, even though he probably can't stand it.

Okay, what on Earth is going on in this photo? We don't even know where to start. Is Paul Rudd whispering sweet nothings into Seth Rogan's ear, or is he just going for q quick little sniff? Whatever the case is, this set-up is one of the weirdest we've ever seen, and we can't imagine that Jason's too proud of it.

10 The Greys Are Sprouting For Ted

via Patch

Oops... too late. There are now more grey hairs than there are dark ones on Josh Radnor's face, and there's no way he'd be too happy to admit that. This photo was snapped up at The New York Stage & Film 2018 Winter Gala, with Josh wearing a very similar outfit to what we'd imagine Ted to wear.

9 Not Your Best Look, Jase

via Salon.com

With 208 episodes and nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother under his belt, it's hard to imagine Jason Segel as anything other than the big, lovable Marshall Eriksen. So, when we see him playing the role of David Foster Wallace with thin-framed glasses, long hair, and a bandana, it's all a little weird.

Granted, Jason Segel's decision to wear a beret isn't quite as embarrassing as the bandana and long hair combo that we just saw, however, that doesn't mean that it's a good look by any means. It's fine, Jason, some people just aren't hat guys – if the rest of us can live with that sad reality, you can too.

7 Josh Radnor LOVES His Music

via Title Magazine

Not everyone is aware of this but Ted, AKA Josh Radnor, is actually a huge music fan. In fact, he even makes some of his own. That being said, the way he's posing seems a little strange. Also, are those a few grey hairs sneaking out of your beard, Ted? Might want to do something else before time catches up to you...

When Josh Radnor isn't saying "I love you" on a first date as Ted in HIMYM, he's actually spending a lot of time working on music, or at least he has in the last few years. Together with Ben Lee, Josh created the band 'Radnor & Lee', which got some airtime on Jimmy Fallon, as you can see.

5 Marshall And Lily's Best Outfits

via YouTube

As much fun as it was to see our favorite on-screen couple, Marshall and Lily, dressed up in wacky, cute, or audacious outfits time and time again, this is probably a set of costumes that the actors would like to forget. The pirate and the parrot look was fine for Halloween, but it's hard to look at any other day of the year.

4 A Different Look For Lily

via Syfy Wire

From the minute that How I Met Your Mother hit TV screens, we fell in love with Lily Aldrin, played by the equally delightful Alyson Hannigan. However, after well over 200 episodes in the same role, we came to expect a certain personality and a certain look. The one pictured is a little too left-field for us.

3 Not That Kind Of Hair

via Hindustan Times

In the name of film tradition and convention, every performance needs its good guys and its bad guys. As Count Olaf in the Lemony Snicket adaptation, Barney, AKA Neil, shaved his head and let it regrow into this colossal mess, with the help of the makeup and costume teams, of course.

2 Say No To The Mo

via Good Morning America

Alright, Neil, we have to talk. Unless it's November and you're raising money for charity, we never want to see you with a mustache ever again. Capiche? On top of that, the actor is looking a little too tanned – did he spend a few weeks at the beach or could it be spray tan? Either way, we wouldn't be too proud of this look if we were you.

1 A Quirky Story

via brobible

There's a pretty funny story behind this photo. Essentially, one guy was so desperate to get the actor's attention that he decided to eat a photograph of Jason Segel every single day until Jason responded. The dude quickly learned that it wasn't the best idea, having almost choked on one of the photos.
