Puffy shoulder tops are one of the season’s hottest, albeit trickiest sartorial trends. Can anyone, save Emily Ratajkowski, really pull them off without ending up looking like a dude in one of Laura Ingalls’ dresses?

The answer is yes, this style is wearable.

Actress Natalie Portman was rocking the trend on Friday when she was seen walking out of SiriusXM Studio in New York in a bold puffy shoulder top by Batsheva. The 37-year-old mom-of-two was donning an adorably retro, puffy shoulder, high-neck blouse. And you have to admit, she made this anxiety-inducing garment look much less intimidating!

But, how did she pull it off?

Matched with straight-leg jeans, classic pointed-toe flats, and vintage shades, the ensemble looked feminine and romantic, without being outdated or irrelevant. Natalie’s soft and wavy curls complemented her prairie-chic style.

Generally speaking, puffy statement sleeves can look cringe-worthy, if worn the wrong way. Moreover, with many of the season’s puffy shoulder blouses having bold retro prints, mixing and matching can be challenging.

So, a “less is more” attitude is essential to pull off Batsheva’s ruffle-trimmed pieces. Just combine with can’t-live-without basics like high-waisted jeans and monochrome flats, and voila!

Natalie’s delicate, petite frame helped her to rock the puffed shoulder trend. Let’s not forget that frill shoulders can easily throw your proportions off balance, and make you look top-heavy. Puffed shoulder tops can be especially complicated for those with athletic builds with broad shoulders that are larger than the hips, or a wide back, as they tend to add volume, and draw more attention to the upper half. Also if you’re gifted with an ample bust that requires you to wear anything larger than a D-cup. A high-neck micro-floral blouse with puffed shoulders, like Portman’s, can appear matronly instead of girlie.

In order to work this trend for the frames mentioned above, it is best to choose a top that is a dark color, and one that does not have any sorts of crazy prints. With this in mind, we're all for wearing whatever makes you feel good. So if you love your look in a funky puffy shoulder top, wear it!

If you are a pear shape, an hourglass or any shape where your hips are bigger than your shoulders, fear not! Puffy shoulders can be your go-to trend for the summer.
