With every day that goes by Meghan Markle is morphing into a style icon, just like her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

The Duchess of Sussex recently wore yet another dress that revived fond memories of Lady Di, and the look is now taking over social media. And just like everything else that Meghan has donned in the last months, we can tell that similar garments will soon sell out like hot cakes.

Markle stepped out on her one-month wedding anniversary at Ascot in a long button-down ivory shirt dress, made by her wedding dress designer, Givenchy. A skinny black belt accentuated her tiny waist and her elegant contrast hat was a quintessential accessory for this fancy horse-racing event.

Here comes the gossip. A similar dress was worn by Princess Diana at Ascot in 1986.

Was Meghan only playing it safe, or is she seriously trying to pick up where Diana left off twenty years ago? The Givenchy dress was worn only a couple of days after she attended Prince Harry’s cousin’s wedding in an eye-popping long gown. Designed by Oscar De La Renta, it was so similar in style and color to a kaftan-style dress that Diana wore in 1986, that Meghan was believed to be paying tribute to Harry’s mother.

However, despite its £4000 price tag, Meghan’s flowery number was criticised for not being formal enough for a British society wedding. Twitter fans likened it to IKEA bed sheets (ouch!), while several others noticed how big the dress looked on Meghan’s slender frame. According to some Twitter fans, it was too big even for a dress that’s designed with a more loose fit in mind.

Tailored dresses do seem to look better on the Duchess of Sussex. But she can’t possibly risk becoming “tailored Meghan” when there’s a whole “boho” side of her that’s pushing to come out. The Oscar De La Renta dress was an expression of the former actress’ bohemian side. The royal watchers will just need to deal with it, as they did with Diana.

Just like Lady Di, the 36-year-old is making a statement through her stylistic choices.
