When Welsh pop singer formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds (born Marina Diamandis) decided to take a break from music back in 2016, fans were surprised and saddened. After the massive critical and commercial success of the 2015 album Froot, fans were eagerly anticipating whatever would come next from the aforementioned singer/songwriter. So, it was a surprise to hear that she was stepping away from the spotlight.
But now, MARINA (her new and improved stage name) has revealed that she stepped away from music in order to work on her personal transformation. She took a few classes at Birkbeck University in London, England to expand her horizons. But she also worked on herself she had neglected to everything that wasn't connected to her singing career. It was necessary to change up her music, too- hence the change in stage name despite fans' objections.
"It’s for nostalgic reasons for them, but also, people always respond to change in a bit of a frightened way in the beginning, particularly if it’s meant something to their sense of self through their younger years. But I think they are getting it now," MARINA said in a recent interview. "Also, I think you have to be a really confident artist in that you have to do what feels right for you, even if that means that less people like your music. But you never know, maybe more people will like it. It’s just one of those things that, for me, wasn’t an option. I just had to do what I wanted."

While many fans may have been unhappy about her taking a break and/or name change, MARINA admits that it was needed.
"I was at the end of the road of something ... I had stopped growing in my current form," she explained. "Because with art, whether it’s writing, painting, singing, or acting, I feel like you put so much of yourself into it that if you don’t feel 100 percent about it, that’s worrying. Otherwise what’s the point? I just don’t think you should be doing it if it’s not authentic and it’s not coming from a place of passion. I just thought, I don’t feel that and I don’t feel like the same motivations anymore, so maybe I just shouldn’t be an artist. That’s where I stopped."
But MARINA will even concede that her fans have been willing to grow and stand by her. She seems to have benefitted from taking a few years off to work on herself, rather than on her career. Even though she admitted in the same interview that she was nervous to return to music, she seems much happier now as opposed to then. With her new album LOVE + FEAR doing well, it's anyone's guess as to what's next for this pop singer!
