Would we all want Lorelai Gilmore to be our mom? Of course we would. The infamous character on Gilmore Girls is a wise woman who loves her sweet daughter, Rory, as much as she does coffee, food, and the small, strange (but amazing) town of Stars Hollow.
Lorelai Gilmore says a lot of things throughout seven seasons of Gilmore Girls and she says them all crazy fast. Whether she's giving Rory straight-up advice or just ranting (or rambling), she always has something intelligent and wonderful to say, and she is equally funny and witty. Here are Lorelai Gilmore's best quotes about life and love.
10 "Does he have a motorcycle?"
"Does he have a motorcycle? 'Cause if you're gonna throw your life away he'd better have a motorcycle!"
The pilot of Gilmore Girls is honestly so great and there are so many Lorelai Gilmore quotes that stand out. This one in particular, though, not only sums up Lorelai's motto on life but it's also a major plot point.
When Rory wonders if she should stay at her local high school and not go to Chilton, all because she just met a cute boy named Dean, Lorelai freaks out. After all, Lorelai got pregnant in high school and so she's pretty sensitive about Rory getting an awesome education. When Lorelai says this quote, she's partly joking, but she's also proving that Rory would be hurting herself if she missed this opportunity.
9 "You of all people."
"You of all people. The girl who thinks everything through. The listmaker. You didn't bother to discuss those things before jumping into bed with a married guy?"
Lorelai tells Rory this after learning that Rory and Dean have slept together in the season four episode "Raincoats and Recipes." After Rory tells Lorelai that Dean is going to leave his wife, Lorelai says that until divorce papers are signed there's no way to know that, and she finishes with "He's not your Dean, he's Lindsay's Dean."
Lorelai is making a great point: that you have to be really careful when someone is married and you have to take that seriously. She's also letting Rory know that she should continue to care about details and be as smart as she has always been. It's great mom advice... even if Rory is really upset hearing it.
8 "Okay, for starters, I think you have to realize something..."
"Okay, for starters, I think you have to realize something – you were really lucky with Dean. He was an exceptional first boyfriend, and you got spoiled. Most of us didn’t have first boyfriends like Dean. Most of us had first boyfriends like Brian Hutchins."
Lorelai says this in the third season, and it's definitely one of her best quotes about life and love. She explains to Rory that Brian Hutchins was a classmate of hers in grade seven who wanted to know if she would "go steady" with him... but nothing happened until she ran into him at a grade ten dance.
Lorelai is totally right when she says this about Dean. Even fans who are Team Logan or Jess would have to admit that Dean is a sweet and decent soul who treated Rory really nicely. (Well, when he wasn't dumping her because she was too nervous to say that she loved him, but we can deal with that another time.) First loves are never as wonderful as what Rory had with Dean.
7 "There have been very few moments in my life..."
"There have been very few moments in my life where I have actually wished I had one of those enormous cream pies you can just smash in someone's face, but this is definitely one of them."
After Jess makes a comment about Luke and Lorelai that bugs her, especially since this was in the second season and they weren't dating yet, she says this to him. It's not only one of her best quotes but totally hilarious, too.
Just like Lorelai Gilmore, we could all say that there have been a couple of times when taking a pie to someone's face would be pretty amazing. It would be so satisfying... but, of course, we wouldn't actually do that. The next time this happens, we should remember Lorelai's funny and clever quote.
6 “I can’t stop drinking the coffee..."
“I can’t stop drinking the coffee, I stop drinking coffee, I stop doing the standing, and the walking, and the words-putting-into-sentences doing."
Since we're talking about Lorelai Gilmore quotes, at least one quote has to mention coffee. Lorelai said these funny words in the season four episode "Luke Can See Her Face."
Lorelai put into words how so many of us feel about coffee. We do feel that we need it to function and have a good day, and we honestly don't feel that she's exaggerating when she says that it's necessary to "do the standing and the walking." Gilmore Girls really does a good job of making anyone watching it want to drink a vat of strong, black coffee basically immediately.
5 "Everything is magical when it snows."
"Everything is magical when it snows. Everything looks pretty. The clothes are great; coats, scarves, gloves, hats."
If Lorelai Gilmore loves coffee a lot, she also loves snow just as much. She often talks about the first time that it snows, and this quote is one of her best.
For those of us who live in a cold climate, it's going to snow, and we have to deal with it. We might as well follow Lorelai's lead and see the magic and happiness in it. Even though she's making a statement about her love of snow, she's actually giving us some awesome life advice: letting us know that looking on the bright side and being positive is a much better idea.
4 "It's all any of us wants..."
"It's all any of us wants, to find a nice person to hang out with until we drop dead. Not a lot to ask!"
Is there a better way to sum up looking for a partner? We don't think so, which is why this is definitely one of Lorelai Gilmore's best quotes. We have most likely said something similar after going on a bad date -- how many of us have said to our mom or sister or friend, "Why can't I find a nice girl/guy?!"
Thankfully, Lorelai does find this person in Luke, and for fans who have watched the entire seven seasons plus the Netflix revival, it was a pretty long wait. But they do end up together and that's all that we have wanted.
3 "I love that you have my eyes..."
"I love that you have my eyes and my coffee addiction, my taste in music and movies. But when it comes to love and relationships, I don't want you to necessarily be like me. I don't want you to think that I raised a kid that couldn't say 'I love you.' I'm not talking specifically about Dean. I'm talking generally, in life."
When fans think about the best Lorelai Gilmore quotes, they're definitely thinking about this one from the season one episode "P.S. I Lo...": when Lorelai gives Rory advice about love and then mentions Taylor Hanson. It's flawless. After Lorelai says this amazing speech to Rory, she says that if Rory was in a relationship with Taylor Hanson, it would be great if she could confess her love for him.
Lorelai really wishes that Rory will be able to tell someone that she loves them and that she won't have as many relationship problems as Lorelai has had. It's a really sweet moment and we're rooting for Rory just as much as her cool mom is.
2 "Hey you got to be careful when you drink coffee on the bus. It's bumpy."
When Lorelai says this to Rory in the season seven finale, "Bon Voyage," Rory responds, "I can handle it." This starts the kind of cute back-and-forth between the mother and daughter that we're used to, but this time, it's so much more meaningful. Lorelai is trying her best to give Rory some motherly advice before Rory leaves on a reporting job.
Although Lorelai is telling Rory that she should buy her a thermos so she can enjoy coffee on the tour bus super easily, she's really giving her life advice. She wants her daughter to look after herself... and, okay, we're still tearing up.
1 “Get back in your pyjamas..."
“Get back in your pyjamas, go to bed, eat nothing but gallons of ice cream and tons of pizza, don’t take a shower or shave your legs or put on any kind of makeup at all and just sit in the dark and watch a really sad movie and have a good long cry and just wallow. You need to wallow.”
Finally, here is Lorelai Gilmore's best quote about life and love: when she talks about wallowing. Many of us might not have even heard of the concept of wallowing before this. Now, whenever we have been dumped (or done the dumping), we think about Lorelai and we grab the ice cream and sad movies.
When Rory and Dean break up in season one, it's really sad for us to watch and it's even worse for Lorelai since she has to watch her daughter go through her first experience being heartbroken. Lorelai knows that you have to wallow and feel bad and that is how you get through it. She taught us this, too.
