Riverdale actress Lili Reinhart revealed on her Instagram Story this weekend that she had started therapy again. Her post was intended to encourage others to seek help if needed without fear or shame.
"Friendly reminder for anyone who needs to hear it: Therapy is never something to feel ashamed of," Reinhart wrote. "Everyone can benefit from seeing a therapist. Doesn't matter how old or 'proud' you're trying to be," her statement continued.
The actress, who says she’s on a journey of self-love, added, "We are all human. And we all struggle. Don't suffer in silence. Don't feel embarrassed to ask for help."
The 22-year-old, who plays Betty Cooper on the hit CW series, says that she decided to seek therapy again to deal with her anxiety and depression. She joins other celebrities, such as Selena Gomez, who have opened up about their mental health and personal struggles. Prince William has also spoken out and has become an advocate for mental health treatment.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised in the nearby town of Bay Village, Reinhart fell in love with singing, acting, and dancing at the age of 10, and asked her mom to drive her to New York for auditions. After moving to Los Angeles at 18 years, she almost gave up after five months. The actress has said that Riverdale came into her life at a time when she was dealing with the worst depression she had ever experienced. She credited the show with saving her and expressed her gratitude that the series had been renewed for a second season.
Reinhart has discussed her personal struggles in the past, including her body dysmorphia, being bullied and dealing with acne. Last July, the actress was bullied by online trolls regarding her physical appearance. "Telling someone they don't deserve to feel insecure because their body is 'fine' or 'just like' whomever. is wrong," she tweeted on July 2. "That's part of the problem. That's part of body shaming."
Reinhart and her Riverdale co-star Camila Mendes have also spoken about body positivity after appearing in Cosmopolitan Philippines. They blasted the magazine for altering their bodies using Photoshop.
Reinhart wrote on Instagram, "Camila and I have worked incredibly hard to feel confident and comfortable in the bodies that we have. It's an everyday battle, sometimes. And to see our bodies become so distorted in an editing process is a perfect example of the obstacles we have yet to overcome."
Last August, Reinhart was honored at Variety's Power of Young Hollywood event and spoke about being an "openly flawed human" and "imperfect." She dedicated the award to her fans who she says have given her the power to be honest about her personal issues. She also encouraged influencers to talk about their flaws, and encouraged people to be themselves, finding power in their imperfections.
On Valentine’s Day, Reinhart shared a picture with her boyfriend and Riverdale co-star Cole Sprouse. “You make me very happy. Happy Valentine’s Day, my love,” she said of Sprouse, who plays Jughead on Riverdale. Though there have been rumors that the couple has been dating since Riverdale began in 2016, they didn’t confirm the relationship until last spring.
