Lili Reinhart has captured the hearts of the world as fresh-faced Betty in the Netflix original series, Riverdale. While she debuted with rumored beau Cole Sprouse on the Met Gala red carpet looking like a fairy tale come to life, the actress has taken to Instagram to let her fans know that she struggles with cystic acne. Lili posted a series of stories giving them an insight into her skin troubles.

While many of us suffer with skin issues like acne, seeing public figures looking flawless on the red carpets can have a negative effect on young people, making them feel as though they should look like that. "I have a cystic breakout on my forehead currently," said Lili, explaining that she's suffered from cystic acne since the age of 12, which has knocked her confidence ever since. Having come fresh from a photoshoot in which she was surrounded by cameras and scrutiny, Reinhart professed that "All I could think about were the pimples on my forehead".
Cystic acne is a specific type of skin issue, where your pores get clogged, causing swollen, red and painful spots that penetrate deep into the skin. Breakouts can take weeks to die down for some people. Like many women and men alike, Lili's self-esteem suffers as a result. On her bad days, she texts her mom for support. Her reason for sharing her experience, she says, is to let her fans know that they are not alone. "If I normalize my skin, more people...including myself...will be able to feel okay about their skin".
Despite girls the world over hailing Lili as one of the prettiest faces on our TV screens, she admits that she hasn't quite accepted her natural skin as beautiful, but she hopes that one day she will be able to feel good even when she's having a breakout. It's easy for us to forget when we see pictures of celebrities preened to perfection in magazines that they have usually been airbrushed, and even if they haven't, they have access to all of the high-end treatments that us regular Joe's don't.
Lesson here? Love the skin you're in, even if it's sometimes painful, red and blotchy. Maybe Lili will even follow suit.
