Lady Gaga and her fiancé Christian Carino have called off their engagement, her rep confirmed to PEOPLE. “It just didn’t work out. Relationships sometimes end,” a source told PEOPLE. “There’s no long dramatic story.”
There was speculation of a possible split after Gaga, 32, was spotted without her engagement ring at the Grammy Awards on February 10. Gaga also failed to mention Carino in her acceptance speech after her song “Shallow” won the best pop duo or group performance award.
Carino, 49, was not at the Grammys, although he did accompany Gaga to other events this awards season, including the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Golden Globes, where she accepted awards for her critically-acclaimed role in A Star Is Born.
On Valentine’s Day, Gaga didn’t mention Carino, instead she revealed that she had gotten a new A Star Is Born-themed tattoo on her body. She later showed off a large tattoo of a rose on her spine that commemorates her role in the musical-drama. “Happy Valentine’s Day. A tattoo toast to “la vie en rose” by the beautiful @winterstone my spinal cord is now a rose,” Gaga wrote on Instagram.
She also inked the musical notes “G” and “A” on lines of sheet music on the inside of her arm to spell out her name. At Elle‘s 25th Annual Women in Hollywood Celebration at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles in October 2018, Gaga showed off her engagement to Carino and thanked “my fiancé Christian” during her acceptance speech.
PEOPLE exclusively confirmed that Gaga and Carino, a talent agent, were dating in February 2017 after the couple were seen displaying affection at a Kings of Leon concert that year. After ending her five-year relationship with Taylor Kinney, “she wasn’t expecting to find love with Christian so quickly,” a source told PEOPLE in October, “but things just became serious very fast. Christian is a good, grounding force and understands her career.”
Carino was married to Brooke Baldwin from 1997 to 2015, and they have a daughter together. He also briefly dated The Walking Dead actress Lauren Cohan and was reportedly involved with Amber Heard at one point. Gaga met Carino at the Creative Artists Agency, where he has worked with Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Lopez, Johnny Depp, and Justin Bieber, as well as Gaga.
There is no word on whether the singer will return her engagement ring, which according to Andrew Brown, the President of WP Diamonds, was a 6-7 carat pink sapphire with a diamond halo totaling 3-4 carats. “This is likely a high quality, no heat (treatment), pink sapphire. It looks like it may be a Padparadscha sapphire, in which case this ring would easily retail between $300,000 and $400,000," he told E! News. Gaga was also engaged to Kinney from 2015 to 2016.
