If there’s anyone who knows how to color hair, it’s the guy who does Kim Kardashian West’s hair. The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star rarely goes a week without coloring her hair, and while it’s usually almost black or bright blonde, she been known to switch things up from time to time.

Take earlier this month, when Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney all took an impromptu trip to Japan, and Kim decided to get her hair colored for the special occasion.

"Kim wanted to do pink for Japan, so it was just about picking the right shade," Color Wow ambassador Chris Appleton told E! News at a luxury hotel in Hollywood. "We decided on this pale pink, which really complemented her skin...and it was really, kinda pretty."

As for where the inspiration for pink came, we’re getting a few conflicting reports. On Instagram, Kim said that it was anime that gave her the idea and posted a picture of a prototypical heroine from the genre.

But on Kim’s personal app she says that it actually came from wearing a wig. "Ever since I did the CR Fashion Book shoot and wore a pink wig, I thought it would be fun to dye my hair pink," she wrote to her followers. "Chris Appleton and I thought about it for a month and then decided to just go for it! Since my hair is blond right now, it was easy to put the pink color over it. I figured now was the perfect timing!"

Appleton, who also works with the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Ariana Grande, says that the arrival of spring is the perfect time to bleach your hair and pick out some different colors to show off in the sunshine. But he cautions people to stay away from the hard and dark colors.

"Going from icy blonde, people are going to start playing with soft peaches, soft pinks, soft blues," he said. "They're super light and super iridescent. They're not dark or deep, because when you go in that direction, it starts to feel more grungy."

And of course, as an ambassador for Color Wow, Appleton couldn’t leave without making sure everyone knows the importance of color-protecting shampoo. "Using the right shampoo makes a huge difference," he said, plugging Color Wow Security Shampoo before he went.
