Kate Middleton is the style queen who made royals fashionable again after the loss of Princess Diana. The trendsetter, who put polka dots, floral dresses and royal blue back on the fashion radar, has paved the way for the Meghan Markle style hysteria that we are currently witnessing.
And yeah, this year perhaps wasn’t the easiest for the new mum-of-three, but it looks like Kate is back on full speed. The Duchess of Cambridge recently wore a statement red tartan midi skirt by Emilia Wickstead, which she paired with knee-high black suede boots and a black cashmere cardigan by Brora. According to fashion experts, by doing so, Kate combined three of the hottest Autumn-Winter 2018 trends and pretty much gave a ‘masterclass’ in fashion. Hooray for Kate!
Midi skirts are impossible to ignore this season, so wearing them right is key. Catherine was smart to combine colorful tartan with black, which made the ensemble both Christmassy and in vogue at the same time.
What’s more-and, believe me, I wasn’t planning to say this- the midi skirt-and-boots combo has a kind of boho-chic vibe that just screams Meghan Markle. Meghan’s most memorable looks all involved a midi, and often a pleated skirt in more neutral colors such as navy and camel. Meanwhile, during her third pregnancy, Catherine mostly opted for over-the-knee maternity outfits in royal-favorite colors such as bright red, cornflower blue and emerald green. In the first months of her pregnancy, she even went for an over-the-knee Miu Miu tartan coat, which I am sure you all remember clearly, as she wore this during Meghan Markle’s first royal Christmas at Sandringham last year.
Now that Duchess Kate is no longer pregnant she can go back to being a style icon. Does this mean it’s time that Meghan and Kate swapped wardrobes? Probably not. It’s not just that Harry and Meghan are moving out of Kensington Palace to Frogmore cottage in anticipation of the first child together.
But there have been whispers in the air, thanks to an unknown palace mole, that there’s a rift between Kate and Meghan, and that the two of them have nothing in common. It has even been claimed that Kate and William will not spend Christmas with Harry and Meghan. Oh dear.
Is there a grain of truth in these stories? Only time will tell.
