Life is pretty good for Jonathan Van Ness. The 31-year-old hairdresser is already highly successful traveling between New York and Los Angeles styling the locks of only the most discerning of clientele. He’s also the host of his own podcast, Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness and stars in Funny or Die’s Gay of Thrones parody web series.
On top of all that, Van Ness is the grooming expert on Netflix’s Queer Eye, the Queer Eye For The Straight Guy reboot that released its second season just last Friday.
Most recently, in an interview with Vogue UK, Van Ness dished on pampering, skincare, and all things beauty.
Jonathan got his start in the beauty world by going to the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis at age 18. He finished in 2006 and then stopped off in Arizona on his way to LA, the final destination of all of the greatest hairstylists. He got his start at the Sally Hershberger Salon as a personal assistant before moving on to found his own hair salons, but it was at Sally Hershberger’s that he got a real eye for helping people achieve their best selves.
Skincare is an exceptionally important and involved subject with Jonathan. He suffers from psoriasis, so he doesn’t exfoliate all that often, just once a week or every other week (where he uses Dr. Brandt and Kate Somerville exfoliating facial washes). Van Ness loves oil cleaners such as Shu Uemura, Josie Maran, and Marula, and sings their praises throughout the interview.
In the shower, he’s a fan of Jaboneria Marianella Kalahari oil, but honestly prefers baths where he uses either a LUSH bath bomb or some bath salts with essential oils. Once bathed, Van Ness moves on to apply Eve Lom face serum followed by eye cream, for which he uses “a bajillion” brands. After that, he applies an eye mask with a jade roller, and then sunscreen over the whole production.
Jonathan admits that it’s not an everyday routine to go all-out like that. “But if I’m going to walk the carpet, or do press… when I want to look cute, basically,” the style guru admits.
Van Ness has way more to dish on the subject of beauty routines, so check out the full interview here.
