Hip-hop artist Cardi B may have the whole hip-hop market by the tail, but one thing that's escaped her grasp has been her marriage to fellow rapper Offset. On Wednesday, the performer who first broke into the market in 2017 with "Bodak Yellow" posted a 42-second video explaining that she's broken up with her husband of one year and two months.
"So, everybody been bugging me and everything. And you know, I been trying to work things out with my baby father for a hot minute now," said the rapper, whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar.
"And we're really good friends and you know we're really good business partners and you know, he's always somebody that I run to, to talk to and we got a lot of love for each other, but things just haven't been working out between us for a long time."
Cardi B added later in the video that no one was to blame for the split, although speculation is rife that the couple was drifting apart anyway, even after the singer gave birth to their daughter, Kulture Kiari Cephus, back in July. It was an unusual remark, given the performer's reputation for her candor. Offset, whose real name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus, was supposed to have a new single by his hip-hop trio Migos drop on Wednesday. Thanks to the announcement which garnered more than five million views in a matter of hours, those release plans have since been put on hold.
What likely won't stop, at least until the official reason for the split is revealed, is the rampant speculation over how the marriage ended. In terms of Cardi B's own life, the 25-year-old had a banner year with her debut album Invasion of Privacy, which earned two Grammy nominations and yielded an unprecedented number of hits, including five songs occupying the R&B/hip-hop charts simultaneously, a first for a female artist.
Besides performing live, she was a regular on the talk show circuit guesting on the likes of Ellen and The Tonight Show. And along with her candor is a fierce temper that saw her in legal trouble after an August brawl in a New York strip club and a fiery feud with recording artist Nicki Minaj.
Offset and the rest of Migos also did well with their album Culture II debuting in the top berth of the Billboard R&B/hip-hop charts back in February as well as charting 15 songs simultaneously in the genre's hot 100 rankings. But despite heavy sales and airplay, 26-year-old Offset was also notorious for garnering his share of negative headlines.
Besides having three children, all with different mothers, Offset's also done time for weapons charges as well as possession of illegal drugs. More recently, rumors of his philandering were anything but hush, while a cloud hangs over the circumstances surrounding a car accident he survived back in May.
But right now, the two are considering how to move ahead of divorce proceedings as well as the welfare of their daughter. The matrimonial ride may have been a short one, but obviously, we haven't heard the last of these two.
