Celebrities in hats — the pics prove that, no matter how glamorous or polished their image may be, celebs are just as prone to fashion faux pas as the rest of us. It's easy to latch onto a style trend that looks cool... on somebody else.

Over the decades, hats have come in and out of fashion. During the first half or so of the 20th century, it was considered improper to leave the house without one. Then, in the 1960s, fashion rules were freed up, and hats largely fell out of favor.

Nowadays, headgear is creeping back into the picture. It's a trend that starts on the runways, is spread by trendsetters and high schoolers, and now reaches even the most uncool suburban malls. But — not every hat looks good on every head.

It's a lesson learned by these celebs when they went out in public wearing less than flattering hats. In some cases, they were repeat offenders who apparently thought the look was stylish rather than awkward. Sorry, but no.

20 JLo Gets Lost Inside Her Big White Hat

Normally, JLo is a fashion icon. She's polished, up to date, and doesn't make many false steps when it comes to her wardrobe. Her 2019 Grammys look, however, was a notable exception. The dress was... okay, but the hat proves the axiom that more is sometimes definitely too much. Her face is lost in that big white thing.

19 Pharrell's Over-Sized Grammy Hat

Pharrell Williams showed up at the 56th GRAMMYs on January 26, 2014 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, wearing the hat which became famous in its own right after photogs immortalized the look on social media. It caused such a buzz that he later auctioned it off on eBay for more than $10K to benefit From One Hand to Another, a children's charity.

18 Justin Timberlake Commits Denim On Denim Infraction

Oh the early 2000s, that brief moment in time when denim on denim outfits were actually considered to be cool. So cool, in fact, that Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears (remember when they were a couple?) wore ultra denim matching outfits to the 2001 VMA Awards. Justin had to top off the look with a blue denim cowboy hat of all things.

17 Celine Dion And The Backwards Suit Incident

Back in 1999, singer Celine Dion used to get a lot of flack for her fashion choices — so much so, that she actually quit red carpet appearances altogether. Sometimes, though, the critique was justified. A case in point: the infamous backwards white Dior suit she wore to the 1999 Oscars, complete with a ridiculously oversized white fedora.

16 FKA Twigs And The Tinsel Headpiece

They've since broken up, but back in 2016, actor Robert Pattinson and singer FKA Twigs were engaged. That's when they went to the Met Gala in New York City together. Now sure, the Met Gala has a theme for each year, and the celebs do come out in some far out fashions. But, this look doesn't make a statement — it looks like she got too close to the Christmas tree and got tinsel caught in her hair.

15 Patrick Stewart's Curiously Tiny Cap

Star Trek icon Patrick Stewart is known for his fine acting chops, and a certain very British elegance — most of the time. We're not sure what he was thinking, what event he was attending, or what the tiny hat represents, but we are sure that it's definitely not his look.

14 Joe Jonas And Sophie Turner Look Unbearably Cute In Party Hats

We get that these two love birds are in their own little world, but sooner or later, the honeymoon will be over. These pics, however, of newlyweds Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner celebrating Joe's 30th birthday with lunch in NYC and a couple of shiny party hats, will live forever.

13 Harry Styles Stays Out Of The Rain In His Umbrella Hat

British singer Harry Styles is known for wearing different hats as a part of his signature look. It's usually a wide brimmed hat, and he is one of those people who can pull it off. Not so for this umbrella hat, an early fashion faux pas we're sure he regrets.

12 Chris Brown Can't Pull Off The Bucket Hat Look

There are very few people in this world who can — or should — even try to pull off a bucket hat. Yet, many still try. Chris Brown is one of them, but his appearance in this multi-colored monstrosity only proves that celebrities can look just as ridiculous as the rest of us.

11 Oprah's Royal Wedding Feather Fiasco

Yes, it was a royal wedding, and hats are the norm for female guests. But, we're guessing that if Oprah had her druthers, she'd rather go back in time and choose different headgear over what she's adorned her head with here. She looks fab otherwise, but that over-sized feathery hat is just too much.

10 Snoop Dogg Needs To Ditch His Duckie Cap

Snoop Dogg seems like a dude with a good sense of humor, and it's true that many rappers are known for their unusual sense of style, but still, you've gotta draw the line somewhere... That being said, we'd like to think that even laidback Snoop would look at this image with regrets.

9 Is Jack White Supposed To Be Cool?

Jack White has a hipster image to uphold, and we can only guess that this, and his many other unfortunate hat choices, are part of that image. We can only hope that one day he'll move beyond the messy frat boy look.

8 K-Pop Band Shinee And Those Weird Wide Brims

K-Pop bands in general are known for their often wild fashion choices. Back in 2013, the members of Shinee were into hats — apparently various kinds, judging from the Everybody cover, and promo pics taken at the time. Wearing wide brimmed black hats for a black and white shoot seems like an ill-advised choice.

7 Kyle Real Of Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills' Fashion Fail

During Season 9 of RHoBH, Kyle Real became known for her unattractive head coverings. This wide brimmed black number certainly has the potential to look stylish. But, with the black outfit and dark hair, it looks like she's on her way to a funeral, or going to a Halloween party as a witch.

6 David Beckham Goes Newsy

We can't figure out why a dude like David Beckham, as famous for his good looks as his scoring abilities as a (former) soccer player, would want to make himself look like some down market wannabe hipster; but that's how he was photographed in the spring of 2019. Word is that son and model Brooklyn Beckham is also fond of the newsboy cap, but we have news for them both: no one looks good in them.

5 Keeping The Von Dutch Hat Craze In The Past

There were other celebs who loved that trucker hat craze of the early 2000s, notably Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, and Ashton Kutcher. For a while, everyone who was anyone was sporting a trucker hat, and preferably a Von Dutch. Why? We can't, and don't want to, remember. It's a look that flatters no one. That's why there was brief alarm in 2018 when Kendall Jenner seemed to want to bring it back... luckily the attempt failed.

4 Lady Gaga's Lobster Hat Outing In London

Remember when Lady Gaga used to shock us on the reg with her odd sense of style? Back in 2010, as she finished the London dates of her Monster Ball tour, she headed out for dinner to an upscale restaurant. Her choice of wardrobe turned heads, to say the least — a not-quite-opaque futuristic nurse's outfit, and a lobster hat.

3 Blossom And The Regrettable 1990s Flower Hat Craze

Blossom was a comedy that played on the NBC network for five seasons, beginning in 1990. It was Mayim Bialik's big break in showbiz, and her look was cutting edge style for the time, so we can't really blame her for all those ridiculous hats she wore back then. But, we still do.

2 Khloe Kardashian's Black Leather Baseball Cap

We can only assume that Khloe Kardashian was wearing the baseball cap and dark glasses to try and avoid the paparazzi — because it couldn't be for the way it looks. The combination of the glam leather and fur-sleeve coat over a sleek black outfit just doesn't mesh with the casual vibe of a baseball cap.

1 James Bay Loses His Signature Hat

Prior to 2017, British singer-songwriter James Bay was known for his long hair and signature black hat. We're not sure why in hindsight, especially considering he cut the hair, lost the hat, and introduced the world to his hot new look. He hasn't gone back to long hair — or hats — since.
