Hair Styles: Silver Is The New Gray In Hollywood

Last year, Allure announced that gray hair was 2018's most popular hair-color trend. This year, A-listers are taking it one step further. Rather than granny gray, celebrities are embracing a futuristic silver. More Storm from X-Men than Queen Elizabeth.

Last weekend, at the SAG Awards, Nafessa Williams, one of the stars of the new CW DC Comics series Black Lightning, sported a metallic blue shade of silver, which has more shine than the traditional gray. Model Iskra Lawrence has also shown off a new hair color this year that is a glossy, metallic silver/gray.

Ruby Rose, who recently appeared as Batwoman in the Flash/Arrow/Supergirl crossover, began the year as a platinum blonde in her native Australia, though just before heading back to the US, she posted a photo of her hair dyed a silvery shade of pastel blue.

Siobhan Jones from Headmasters in London, who was responsible for dyeing Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall’s hair silver, says that to dye hair silver you must first pre-lighten the hair to a clean white blonde and then color it with a customized silver mix tone. Since Thirlwall has brown eyes, Jones left the roots more natural and added silver tones to the mid-lengths and ends of her hair.

According to Jones, one of the downsides of dyeing your hair silver is that it can weaken the hair, therefore it is best for shorter cuts. For longer cuts, it’s essential to use quality products and check the sensitivity of your hair, which can be down by a trained colorist, before getting started.

Jones uses L'Oréal Professionnel Platinum, as well as a pre-lightener, which contains beeswax to condition and lift the hair. Jones also recommends treating your hair with a mask at home after coloring and getting regular in-salon treatments. She suggests Paul Mitchell Keratriplex Awapuhi wild ginger treatment, which strengthens and hydrates hair.

Another option to go silver without making a permanent commitment is to use at-home products to test a shade of silver. Experts recommend prepping your hair with Fudge's White Shade of Pale toner, and using Colour Freedom Silver Blonde, Crazy Colour silver hair dye, L'Oréal Paris Colourista or L'Oréal Paris Permanent Paint in Silver Grey to achieve a DIY salon-quality silver.
