Ariana Grande straight-up said it– "I'm so [...] grateful for my ex." While this newly single lady flashes the pinks and diamonds in "7 Rings," she's making a point. All seven of the rings are for the girls, the ex-boyfriend isn't invited, but at the same time, he isn't being dissed.

We don't need the celebrity world to show us how difficult a breakup can be. If you've been through it yourself, you'll know the drill. Figuring out a way to handle the ex is a challenge, and it doesn't matter if you live in Boston or Beverly Hills.

Respect. Relationships are full of it (or not). It's when everything goes downhill that the word can turn on its head. Hollywood A-Listers? They're no different.

Chris Pratt recently revealed his engagement to Katherine Schwarzenegger. "I'm so happy for you both!! Congratulations!" was Anna's response. Jenna Dewan has even used the word "respect" towards Channing Tatum's new partner.

It isn't always so straight-forward, though. Here are nine celeb couples who have nothing but respect for their exes, plus 11 who still hold a grudge.

20 Ariana Grande: "And For Pete I'm So Thankful"

With those hot-pink outfits, "7 Rings" is almost making "Thank U, Next" feel like old news. Ariana Grande continues to march the #SoloHighway like nobody's business, although we do now know that Thank U, Next, the album will be released on February 8th.

"Even almost got married, And for Pete, I'm so thankful. Wish I could say, "Thank you" to Malcolm, 'Cause he was an angel."

Ari makes it perfectly clear in her lyrics. She isn't the type to hold a grudge– in fact, she's "grateful" for her ex. Ariana might have split from Pete in October 2018, but she still hasn't said a bad word about him.

19 Tyga: Takes Credit For Kylie's Fame

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott are now so #Solid, it's almost impossible to picture the old days. In 2016, Kylie was dating Tyga. While that relationship is #DoneAndDusted, it's Tyga who managed to make 2018 headlines regarding it.

Tyga "takes credit for Kylie Jenner's Lip Kits," Cosmo reported in August 2018. "I don't need to go online and tell people I did this and I'm the one helping her coming up with these colors and names on her...lip line. It was a lot of stuff," Tyga tweeted.

Tyga talked about "stepping in" and his supposed role in making Kylie Forbes' "Youngest Self-Made Billionaire." Talk about holding a grudge.

18 Taylor Swift: "I Knew You Were Trouble"

Taylor Swift is known for penning songs based on past relationships. "12 Relationships And Their Songs" was Billboard's headline in 2017 (and yes, Harry Styles is on the list). The media outlet reports December 2012 to January 2013 for this brief relationship.

"I Knew You Were Trouble" was written shortly after Tay-Tay's split with Harry. "til you put me down" was her immediate post-split tweet.

Taylor Swift isn't one to throw shade in a massively spiteful way. At the same time, the girl doesn't exactly act like the ex never existed. Taylor's "ex" songs also include Joe Jonas, Zac Efron and Taylor Lautner, Billboard reports.

17 Brad Pitt: Life With Jen "Wasn't Interesting"

They were Hollywood's golden couple– no doubt about it. 2005 was the year Angelina Jolie swooped into Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston's marriage (which promptly collapsed after just over five years). Brad didn't hold back, as Marie Claire reports.

‘It became very clear to me that I was intent on trying to find a movie about an interesting life, but I wasn’t living an interesting life myself,"

Brad said. He added: ‘I think that my marriage (to Aniston) had something to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn’t."

This is where we step in. You do not call Jennifer Aniston "not interesting!"

16 Anna Faris: Congratulated Chris Pratt On His New Engagement

Finally, a former couple who are mature about it. Chris Pratt and Anna Faris once came as the lovable couple who tied the knot in 2009 (but called it quits in 2018). Chris is now engaged to Katherine Schwarzenegger, although there's less talk about Anna dating Michael Barrett.

“I’m so happy for you both!! Congratulations!” Cosmo reported Anna writing in response to Chris's engagement news.

All marriages have their dirt. The good and bad form part of a breakup. Anna hasn't made headlines with negative remarks. Instead, she's congratulating her ex and showing that she's happy for him. Good for her.

15 Drake: Called Rihanna "An Old Vibe"

And we're back to celebs throwing the shade. 2016 marked the end of Rihanna and Drake's relationship– the start is chronicled by Capital Xtra's report of Drake saying the two were "kind of dating" back in 2010. In 2017, Drake wound up getting cozy with JLO. Teen Vogue stated that a reporter wrote,

"Last night at #Hakkasan #Drake played the song 'Work' by Rhianna [sic] and said 'that was an old vibe' then had the DJ change the track."

Drake and RiRi seem to stay out of each other's way these days. It wouldn't be rocket science figuring out why.

14 Selena Gomez: Justin Bieber Is "Super Cool"

With his marriage to Hailey Baldwin, Justin Bieber gets to put a #PermanentlyOff on his on-off relationship with Selena Gomez. The ups and downs of this former couple stretch back around a decade, although Selena has nothing but love for her ex.

"I'll forever support and love him," Glamour reports Selena saying about Justin. Selena even managed to throw Justin some good birthday wishes in 2018 (while they were on a break).

As for Justin? Glamour reports him saying, "My full identity was in her. Her identity was in me. When stuff would happen, I would lose my freakin’ mind, and she would lose her mind, and we would fight so hard because we were so invested in each other."

13 Brad: "12 Years Of [...] With Angelina"

Watching Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie fall apart was one of those trainwreck situations– you want to look away, but you can't. After 12 years together, Brad and Ange called it quits in 2017. New Idea covered the headlines:

"12 years of hell...He realizes his relationship with Angie was toxic from the start.”

The magazine added: “Brad’s demons got a hold of him … Ange used to be so exciting. But by the time they had six kids, Ange was so tired that Brad’s needs were put on the back burner.”

A stressful custody battle ensued, with Brad offering Ange a $100 million divorce settlement, Life And Style reports.

12 Demi Lovato: Not A Bad Word About Wilmer Valderrama

Following some healing time, Demi Lovato recently returned to social media. She also appeared on Henry Levy's IG (as his new girlfriend). The ex here is Wilmer Valderrama, Demi's boyfriend for six years until 2017.

"I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to meet anybody that compares to him, but I'm trying to keep an open heart and open mind when it comes to that,"

E! News quotes Demi saying. Meanwhile, The Daily Mail reports Wilmer calling Demi a "hero" in 2018. Two exes, both grown-up about it, both sending out the #Love.

11 Nicki Minaj: Doesn't Hold Back

When you write a song called "Barbie Dreams" and fill it with disses about every guy you've dated, you're going to make headlines.

"Barbie Dreams" runs for 4 minutes and 40 seconds. It manages to diss Nas, Drake, Meek Mill, 50 Cent, Young Thug, Desiigner, Lil Uzi Vert, The Game, 6ix9ine, Odell Beckham, YG, Eminem and DJ Khaled.

While Nicki Minaj didn't have full relationships with every guy mentioned, she did date Nas and Meek Mill– the others are men that "tried to [get closer to]" her, Rolling Stone reports.

We wouldn't expect anything less from Nicki.

10 Kim K: Kris Humphries "Glad He Got Out When He Did"

Kim Kardashian's previous marriages feel like #MajorHistory. In a way, they are. With her 2014 marriage to Kanye West, three kids and a fourth on the way, KimYe are stronger than ever. The paperwork leaves a trail, though.

'Man, I'm glad I got out when I did." Kris Humphries didn't hold back on Twitter following his 72-day marriage to Kim K.

While this tweet showed its shade, Her reports that Kris did apologize after sending it, saying that he "sincerely apologized" for how it came across, especially because he dragged insensitive remarks about Bruce Jenner into it. Yikes. Too little, too late. The guy showed his feelings, and the world saw them.

9 Emma Stone: Still Loves Andrew Garfield "Very Much"

You'll be hard-pressed to find a side to Emma Stone that doesn't come with a giant #Sweetheart. This Oscar-winning actress is one of the most powerful women in Hollywood, but throwing around a diva vibe isn't Emma's style.

2010 was when dating rumours first started flying around, while 2015 seems to have marked the end.

"It's been a good year. And sad. Pros and cons," E! News quotes Emma saying after the split. She then added that Andrew Garfield is "someone I still love very much." That's cute enough for us to want them back together.

8 Joe Jonas: Opinions On Gigi Hadid Moving On

Gigi Hadid hasn't been throwing us the most straight-forward vibes. It was #GigiAndZayn for most of 2016, then again in 2018, but nobody's quite sure whether Gigi is still dating Zayn Malik. What we do know, is that there's an ex who might be a touch bitter.

“I think it’s interesting that she moved on so quickly, I mean it was definitely quick," Joe Jonas said about Gigi moving on with Zayn.

Joe was speaking to Metro after having deleted a pic of himself, Gigi and Kanye West. It's when the exes start deleting the social media pics that you start wondering. Joe straight-up said what was on his mind.

7 Lamar Odon: Catty Comments About Khloe Kardashian

There's a pattern with Khloe Kardashian. Tristan Thomspon is the third basketball player she's been with (and the second who has made headlines for not being best-behaved). Khloe and Lamar were married, once upon a time.

"She took care of me. She'll be a good mother, for real. She's a great woman," were Lamar's good words when Khloe was expecting, Pop Culture reports.

There's another half, though. As The Irish Examiner reports, he said,

"I understand when it's over, it's over. When she was with her second or third NBA ball player, I could see that."

6 Lady Gaga: No Beef With "Soulmate" Ex

Lady Gaga had a pretty good 2018. A Star Is Born burst onto screens and a big shiny ring landed on Gaga's finger– her engagement to Christian Carino was confirmed at an Elle event. Taylor Kinney is the ex in question here, although there isn't much to question.

"Taylor and I have always believed we are soulmates," Gaga said about her ex in 2016, Glamour reports. "Just like all couples we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break."

Gaga hasn't gone down the scathing route with Kinney. They parted ways, she moved on and this girl doesn't have the time of day to shade her ex.

5 Ben Affleck: Called JLO "Destructive To My Career"

Talk about a walk down memory lane. JLO and Ben Affleck were "Bennifer" all those years ago. It's been over a decade since Jen and Ben ended their engagement, but the comments will never disappear.

JLO was "responsible" for Ben's career low, The Express reported in 2016. "I had broken up with Jennifer and had three or four movies in a row that [failed],” Ben said.

Putting your ex's name in the same sentence as your career hiccups might not be the most direct insult, but there's a way to phrase it without including her. Ben continues to battle his demons.

4 But He Called Jennifer Garner "A Great Person"

While Ben Affleck's romance with JLO is mostly forgotten, his split from Jennifer Garner is still front-page news. "In a good place" is how E Online reports this former couple to be, although nothing is as easy as it sounds.

"Jen's great. She's a great person. We're on great terms. I just saw her this morning, so that's the reality that I live in," Glamour reported Ben saying. That's one mature guy (at least, more mature than with JLO), plus one ex who's got similar views.

"I don't hate him," Jennifer told Vanity Fair. She added: "He's the most brilliant person in any room."

3 Rihanna After Chris Brown: "Sometimes, You Just Have To Walk Away"

Chris Brown managed to wind up with more controversy than ever in January 2019. Run-ins with the law seem to come easily to this guy, and we don't really know what to make of it (or the questionable merch Chris is now selling). RiRi and Chris Brown were once a couple, but in 2009 their relationship came with problematic headlines. RiRi could easily have ruined Chris's career after what he did. But she chose not to.

"Sometimes you just have to walk away," she said, as Celebrity Nine reports.

2 Zayn Malik: Will "Always Love" Perrie Edwards

Zayn Malik has moved onto a more high-profile woman since dating Little Mix's Perrie Edwards. Gigi Hadid has been Zayn's #OnOff girlfriend since 2016. One year earlier, Zayn ended his three-year relationship with Perrie. Contact Music reports him saying,

"I love [Perrie] a lot, and I always will, and I would never end our relationship over four years like that. She knows that, I know that, and the public should know as well."

Zayn made his feelings for his ex very clear. No hate, no grudge, just positivity. That's the way it should be.

1 Mariah Carey: Burned Her Wedding Dress In A Fire Pit

Mariah Carey doesn't do things by half. With $535 million to her name, as Forbes reports, Mariah spends it like she earns it, and that includes her relationships. In 2016, Mariah's billionaire fiancé "dumped" her over the star's "extortionate spending," Daily Mail reports.

Mariah burned her $250,000 custom-made Valentino wedding dress in a fire pit following being dumped, Daily Mail also reports. Even better (or worse), she did so in one of her music videos.

Definitely getting a #Grudge. But Valentino? Say it isn't so!
