However, not all essential oils are created equal. You’ll want to use pure essential oils for treating headaches, and there are certain scents that you should keep on hand. Peppermint essential oil is a great go-to remedy because it contains menthol, which has a cooling effect and can be very soothing for a headache. Lavender is a fantastic choice if you know that your headache was caused by stress, and it’s also great if you need to beat a headache before it interrupts your sleep. While more research is needed to prove the effectiveness of rosemary oil, it looks promising for reducing inflammation and pain levels. Oregano, thyme, and mountain savory essential oils all contain a compound called carvacrol, which helps block pain signals and is another good choice for headache sufferers.
What’s the best way to use essential oils to beat a headache? Either apply them to your temples with a carrier oil like coconut oil or put a few drops on a tissue and breathe it in. Don’t apply pure essential oils directly to your skin, as this can cause irritation—and you don’t want to deal with that in addition to a headache!
