If the tabloids (and almost every rom-com ever made) are to be believed, a woman is nothing without a man by her side. Older, unmarried women are called “sad”, “spinsters”, and “aching for a baby.” Younger women are called “man-eaters” who don’t know how to keep a boyfriend. Their romantic pasts are laid bare for the public to dissect and judge – despite the fact that we don’t know these celebs or how they operate in a relationship.
Fortunately for us, there are other female stars who refuse to abide by the idea that they need a guy to be complete. Choosing to be single and focus on themselves, their friendships, and their careers are fulfilling enough without an ounce of sacrifice! These are 20 celebs who are happily “self-partnered”!
20 Emma Watson
In her December cover story with British Vogue, Emma Watson discussed how she’s looking at her upcoming 30th birthday, and what that means for a woman and a single woman at that. Admitting that, at almost 30 she’s still “figuring things out”, she stated that she’s very happy being single, which she calls being ‘self-partnered’.
19 Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez’s romantic history has been parsed by many magazines, especially in the wake of ex Justin Bieber’s recent marriage to wife Hailey Baldwin. Gomez, however, after taking some time for herself and her own emotional healing, is happily single, and released a song saying exactly that, titled “Lose You To Love Me”!
18 Ariana Grande
While ex-fiancée Pete Davidson is regularly spotted squiring around Hollywood ingénues, Arian Grande has, in the wake of their split and the death of ex Mac Miller, opted for some much need me-time. Speaking many times about how therapy has “saved [her] life”, Grande’s newest album thank u, next was about loving herself and not another guy.
Rihanna is a platinum artist and beauty mogul, so it’s not like she has much time for relationships. Even though she’s kept Drake at arm’s length for the past few years, the singer told New York Magazine in 2015, “Guys need attention. They need that nourishment…I’ll give it to my family, I’ll give it to my work – but I will not give it to a man right now.”
16 Keke Palmer
Keke Palmer is just like her famous meme, in that she does not know this man! The Hustlers actress said to a morning radio show, “It’s very fun being single because you know what happens? You find yourself. You understand what it means to love yourself, instead of putting all this energy into the give and tug in a relationship.”
15 Mindy Kaling
As a writer, producer, actor, comedian, director, and single mother, Mindy Kaling’s life hardly feel lacking just because she doesn’t have a dude in the picture. Kaling, who has kept the identity of her daughter’s father under wraps, told Buzzfeed in 2015, “I love being by myself….If I was in the wrong relationship…that would be so much worse than the feeling of autonomy I feel right now.”
14 Rashida Jones
One of Mindy Kaling’s costars from The Office, Rashida Jones, is also happily “self-partnered”! While she admitted to The Guardian that she had once imagined a prince recusing her, she no longer feels as though that’s the only way for her to be happy, and the only thing that counts for a woman. “What do I want to be saved from? My life’s great!”
13 Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato has been through plenty of ups and downs in her personal life, but the “Confident” singer knows that being one half of a couple isn’t the only way to happiness. Speaking earlier this month in her first public interview in almost a year, Lovato said she’s “never been more in tune with who I am than where I’m at today.”
12 Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore has been married thrice and, with two children, it’s easy to assume that the Hollywood legacy is jaded when it comes to love. In her memoir Wildflower, Barrymore wrote, “it’s ironic that we rush through being ‘single’ as if it’s some disease or malady…Why does no one tell us how important it is to enjoy being single and being by yourself?”
11 Halle Berry
Like Barrymore, Halle Berry’s romantic history is a little messy – but the same can be said for most of us! While some said she “gave up on love” after her third divorce, Berry begs to differ: “The man for me is the cherry on the pie. But I’m the pie and my pie is all good by itself. Even if I don’t have a cherry.”
10 Charlize Theron
Despite being considered one of the most beautiful and talented actresses in Hollywood, Oscar winner Charlize Theron is still happily unattached. While she’s had long-term relationships in the past (Stuart Townsend, Sean Penn) and two children, Theron disagreed that marriage equals happiness, and told Esquire, “A life is good if it’s the life you want.”
9 Elisabeth Moss
Elisabeth Moss’s failed marriage to actor Fred Armisen may have been what has caused the star of The Handmaid’s Tale to move more carefully when it comes to romance, but that doesn’t mean she’s jaded. Speaking to People, the Us star said, “It’s fun to go out at night and not know what’s going to happen. I’m addicted and obsessed with my freedom.”
8 January Jones
Moss’s Mad Men costar January Jones seems to share her old coworker’s lust for life when it comes to keeping things relaxed on the dating front. Though she’s been linked with many eligible actors, Jones explained to People that while a partner may happen in the future, she certainly isn’t unhappy or lonely in her single state.
7 Sophia Bush
Her marriage to former costar Chad Michael Murray has been tabloid fodder for years, but Sophia Bush hasn’t allowed singlehood to be a burden. In fact, she’s embraced it! Bush told People, “You are a complete person on your own. I think that’s something all women deserve to know.” And she’s totally right!
6 Emilia Clarke
Emilia Clarke has been through a lot, with the recent reveal of her brain aneurysms and the ending of Game of Thrones, the show that propelled her to international recognition. Currently single, it was back in 2014 that Clarke said she wasn’t dating anyone – and that it’s okay! “As a woman, it’s in our nature to nurture someone else. Sometimes at the expense of ourselves.”
5 Lucy Hale
Lucy Hale debuted a tattoo (which shows a woman crossing her arms in the shape of a heart) this past Valentine’s Day. In her IG post, Hale wrote of the tattoo, “I got this tattoo recently as a symbol of self-love. And that’s what this last year has been about…being alone (but not lonely), not settling, and truly finding my inner light & loving who I am.”
4 Jennifer Aniston
Few celebs have had their love lives as dissected as Jennifer Aniston’s, whose marriage to Brad Pitt still makes headlines, more than a decade after they split. With a life full of close friends and an A-list career, Aniston isn’t too fussed, though: “I don’t like…where women only feel empowered once they find The Man. It’s just not up my alley. I don’t believe in it.”
3 Kim Cattrall
She may have portrayed a man-obsessed lady on Sex and the City, but Kim Cattrall is far from her Samantha alter ego. Speaking to BBC Radio, Cattrall mentioned the “freedom” of being single without “the thought of someone invading your space.” She spoke of the friendships she’s formed that have become like family, and how those have been so much more fulfilling.
2 Chelsea Handler
Chelsea Handler has never been shy about airing out her dirty laundry in her books and on her shows – better to get her own take on it than leave it to the armchair critics! Like her BFF Jen Aniston, Handler is also happily single. In an essay for Time magazine, Handler wrote, “Society needs to embrace singlehood in all its splendiferous, solitary glory.”
1 Diane Keaton
Diane Keaton has been around for ages and has played many the rom-com lead opposite one man or another. In real life, however, the actress is blissfully unattached! Speaking to People in 2019, the famously unmarried Oscar winner said, “I don’t think it would have been a good idea for me to have married, and I’m really glad I didn’t.”
