If you've ever been on a diet, then you'll know that the majority of them push losing weight by limiting your carb intake - much to our misery. Pasta and potatoes are some of the best things you can eat, so having to cut them out of our daily menus is painful in more ways than one. Now, a new study has revealed you could eat pasta and still lose weight after all. What's more - it could actually help.

According to researchers at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, Canada, it's all thanks to pasta's low glycemic index (GI). This is a system used to rate how rapidly food affects our blood sugar levels. White rice, white bread, and potatoes are high GI foods, meaning that they're digested and absorbed by our amazing bodies super quickly - more quickly than things like green vegetables and lentils. By randomizing trials with 2,500 participants, the team were able to get a better look at the supposed link between pasta and weight gain. The volunteers ate a healthy low GI diet, consuming pasta instead of other forms of carbohydrate for around 3 meals on average each week.

Much to the joy of foodies around the world, the study found that the body weight, BMI, body fat, and waist measurements were not affected by the consumption of pasta. What's more, they lost half a kilo on average in the 12 week duration. Hallelujah! Diets such as Slimming World advocate the use of 'free' foods like potatoes and pasta following this rule, as lower GI foods tend to keep you feeling fuller for longer, negating the need for additional food that may be unnecessary calorie intake.
