Dry brushing the skin has become all the rage recently. It is a new technique that almost everyone can and should be adding to their daily routine for many health reasons.

Although dry brushing the skin a couple of times a day was initially reserved for those on a detox, it is becoming a daily ritual for many not participating in that type of cleanse. A long wooden brush is used to clean dry, damaged, and flaky skin from the body, and the tool is designed to reach those hard to get spots on the skin.

So, what are the health benefits of dry brushing? As mentioned above it is generally part of a detox program because performing this treatment will stimulate the lymphatic system, which collects and transports waste out of the body. When the dry brushing activates this system, it rejuvenates the skin. Plus, according to GOOP it feels terrific and helps get rid of nasty cellulite.

There are a few essentials you will need to begin dry brushing your skin. A polishing body brush, a skin brush and your choice of oils (should you decide to use them), are the only items needed to begin the ritual. All brushes should be gentle, not harsh ones that will not cause cuts or irritation. The objective is to soothe and stimulate the skin, not injure it.

You don't have to use essential oils in the treatment. That part is entirely up to you. However, if you are going to use some oils, it is recommended that you shower first, then apply the oil and dry brush. If you aren't using oils, then you should dry brush and then shower.

The entire process takes about 5 minutes each time. It is recommended you dry brush at least once a day. Since it helps replenish your skin, GOOP suggests doing the process in the morning. Take the brush and make small brush stroke upwards, for example, start at your feet and move up your leg. It is essential to take your time and be firm, but again, not harsh.

Dry brushing is an effective way to help stimulate and improve the skin. Have you ever tried it? If so what did you think? Let us know in the comments!
