Does Coffee Really Boost Metabolism? An Expert Weighs In

We've all seen celebrities hocking so-called "skinny coffee" on Instagram, and you might have even fallen prey to trying some. While most of these concoctions are just glorified laxatives, coffee has long-since been considered a weight-loss aid. When it comes to kicking your metabolism into gear, the internet is swamped with websites telling you to increase your intake of spicy foods, skip breakfast and drink more coffee. Some believe that caffeine can give our bodies the extra boost it needs to burn fat at a quicker rate, but according to one expert, that could just be wishful thinking.

Dori Arad, the director of Mount Sinai Physiolab, told lifestyle website Popsugar that there really isn't a magic food that can significantly affect your metabolism. "Everything that people usually use, like caffeine, for example, has a very short lifespan and it doesn't really increase your metabolism," he said. So, if your morning cup of Joe isn't going to cut it, then what is? Apparently, it's all down to strength training.

If you're prone to going to the gym but usually just stick to cardio, then incorporating some strength training into your workout can help you burn more calories and build more muscle, which in turn means that you're using more energy and increasing your metabolic rate. Sounds like a win-win, doesn't it? What's more, Dr. Arad suggested that consuming more healthy fats and protein could go a long way as your body has to naturally work harder at breaking them down. Consider cutting down your sugar intake too, as our bodies stores these calories by turning them into fat.

Actress Jameela Jamil recently caused a stir when she took to social media to criticize celebrities that endorse "skinny" coffees. The Good Place star stated that she wished all of those making money by selling it on their Instagram profiles would be more honest about what these products actually do. She went on to say that the likelihood of the celebrity endorsers actually drinking the products themselves is highly unlikely, and has a negative effect on young people.
