Clarisonic, everybody’s favorite sonic face brush, has just kicked it up a notch tech-wise. The brand just released Mia Smart, which according to the company is their "smartest skin solution" ever. The new oscillating beauty device works with an app to provide expert tips for personal skin goals and syncs custom cleansing routines to the device.
The Mia Smart, which is suitable for all skin types, promises to remove makeup six times better than washing by hand, making skin look more radiant and smooth. It also claims to fight back against aging on the face, neck, and décolleté with its Firming Massage Head, which is sold separately.
"The rapid oscillation can stimulate circulation so your eyes look brighter, and anytime you massage your skin, you're waking up fibroblasts to trigger collagen production," says Whitney Bowe, a dermatologist and assistant clinical professor at Mount Sinai Health System in New York City.
The device, which provides a gentle back and forth movement creates a vacuum effect when used with water that removes dirt, oil, and makeup from the skin and pores, also works with a Sonic Awakening Eye Massage applicator, also sold separately, to reduce puffiness around the eyes, and a Sonic Foundation Makeup Blending brush for an airbrushed look.
"After I give patients certain fillers, I have them massage the area for five minutes a day for a week so it sets nicely. Many patients keep at it because manual manipulation makes skin supplier and healthier-looking," Bowe says.
Clarisonic, owned by the L'Oréal Group, debuted its sonic skin cleansing in 2004 and has sold over 15 million devices that promise to reveal healthy, younger-looking skin. The devices, which are the number one most recommended skin cleansing devices by US dermatologists, are gentle enough to be used twice a day.
Clarisonic sees smart devices as the future of the company and will be discontinuing its first and second generation Mia devices to make room for the Mia Smart, the brand says. The brand has expanded beyond its first generation of cleansing devices to focus more on anti-aging and massage tools to promote skin firmness, says Naomi Ryseff, director of global brand marketing. The Mia Smart is compatible with nine brushes and two anti-aging massage heads, and the app will recognize the head type that is being used to automatically provide users with the right set timer and vibration strength.
“We realize now that we have a lot of questions about how to use the different heads, and as the devices become more complex, customers need a go-to area [like the Clarisonic app] to discover how to use the device,” Ryseff says.

Clarisonic takes part in anti-bullying campaigns, supporting Pacer's National Bullying Prevention Center, which works to change social behaviors that lead to bullying. Pacer delivers resources to parents, educators, and students, including classroom lessons, school programming ideas, tips, tools, and inspirational stories.
