During an interview with Jimmy Kimmel on ABC’s late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live, singer-songwriter Christina Aguilera discussed the fight that broke out between rappers Cardi B and Nicki Minaj during her New York Fashion Week performance. Aguilera said that although she did not see the fight with her own eyes, she learned about it later and wished she had noticed the altercation.
At the annual Harper’s Bazaar Icons party on Friday night, a New York Fashion Week event where Carine Roitfeld celebrates fashion and style icons, rivals Cardi B and Nicki Minaj reportedly attacked each other outside the main ballroom during Aguilera’s performance of “Fighter” (how appropriate). Aguilera told Kimmel that she only found out about the incident much later, in her hotel room after the show, when her hairdresser shared the gossip.
Aguilera said she is still unsure of exactly what happened—although she first heard that the argument happened during “Fighter,” someone later said that it happened during “Genie in a Bottle.” She considered the possibility that one of her songs moved Cardi and Minaj emotionally enough to confront each other.
By the time the “Accelerate” singer got offstage, Cardi and Minaj were gone, so she never got a chance to see the outcome of the fight. Aguilera also revealed in the interview that she wasn’t upset that something like this happened during her show. “I’m just upset I didn’t get a front row seat! That’s where the real show was,” she said.
According to CBS, an anonymous source witnessed Minaj speaking with someone when Cardi tried to attack her, but Minaj’s security guards intervened. A video circulating social media shows Cardi lunging at someone and being held back; however, she did reportedly throw one of her shoes at Minaj. Another video showed Cardi being escorted out of the party by security, wearing a red Dolce & Gabbana gown, no shoes, and a pretty big bump on her forehead. Daily Mail said that Cardi reportedly developed the bump when Minaj’s security guard elbowed her in the face.
Minaj and Cardi have been rap rivals since Cardi began her rise to fame over the last year. Until Friday night’s altercation, the ongoing feud had only been a rumor. It was said that Cardi lashed out at Minaj because she thought Minaj had made fun of Cardi’s newborn daughter. Minaj denied the allegations and told CBS that the fight was “mortifying and embarrassing.” Cardi, on the other hand, does not regret her actions. She referred to the fight in an Instagram post and said that she “feels zero remorse.”
Do you think Aguilera was right? Did her music just evoke too much passion in Cardi and lead to the confrontation? Let us know in the comments!
