There are many who remain skeptical about the body-positive movement gaining more and more mainstream traction these days. We're hoping they were seated in front of the flatscreen watching the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night.
Naturally, music fans were looking to see how things would go for the likes of Cardi B, Shawn Mendez, Taylor Swift and a slew of other melodic A-listers, but the biggest mind-blowing moment was also one of the most unexpected. That was when Chrissy Metz, who plays Kate Pearson in the NBC hit drama This Is Us, appeared onstage to deliver the award for Top Social Artist.

Sharing the stage with show cohort Justin Hartley, she was greeted with such an ovation, one would have thought she had won an award of her own. Which probably wouldn't seem too out of reach, given that she has a few credentials as a singer.
The reason Metz went over so well with the Billboard live audience had more to do with her work in garnering greater respectability among plus-sized folks, both in the entertainment industry and out. A role model for people with similar physiques, she's been promoting a new line from LOFT, a clothier that tries to balance wardrobe that's not only available in as many sizes as possible, but is also affordable. Getting into those ventures has apparently done wonders, as Metz admitted the additional exposure is inspiring her to take even more chances.
The crowd was also taken by her lengthy black, one-shoulder gown. It was a one-of-a-kind from her designer, John Paul Ataker. She reportedly said it was her experience on the red carpet, which can be intimidating to most, especially when they don't have the requisite marquee figures, that prompted her to wear a form-fitting dress. But given the move towards more acceptance of size inclusivity (a social direction that Rihanna had noticed and prompted her to start her Savage x Fenty lingerie line), Metz attributed the experience to being educated while becoming part of that movement.
It also helped that she got additional support from the likes of Tyra Banks, Rebel Wilson and Derek Hough, who accompanied her to the Las Vegas-based awards show in a private jet.
She looked amazing!
