The universally flattering and oh-so-natural waves that we have all worn with reverence in the last years are on their way out of hair fashion.

Celebrities like the Kardashian sisters have decided that the natural look has run its course, and for some time have been sporting shiny "glass hair". What started as a celebrity trend on Instagram, has become the hottest hair trend for this fall.

But what exactly is glass hair? Glass hair refers to the very straight, sleek, shiny, almost wig-like bob with a glassy finish that we regularly see in Kim Kardashian, Olivia Culpo, and Bella Hadid’s most recent selfies. Oh, and let’s not forget style icon Victoria Beckham, who has been a fan of the shorter bob for ages (albeit a wavier version).  Victoria just cut her daughter Harper’s long blonde mane to the ultra sleek “Posh Spice bob”. Like mother, like daughter.

Celebrity stylist Justine Marjan shares that the glass hair movement isn’t new. It is a trend that is making a comeback from the '90s when supermodels like Linda Evangelista famously sported the look. Moreover, let’s not forget that it’s also another name for the silk press, the famous hairstyle which African-American women have embraced since the '90s.

It’s simply a more refined and glossier version of the iconic bob, as you probably guessed from the stunning images.

The look is no doubt very elegant, reviving images of Parisian-chic. However, unlike the famously effortless-chic French hair (often embracing natural curls and fly-away hairs), glass hair must stay perfectly still. No doubt it’s a high-maintenance look to adopt if you don’t naturally have the right type of hair for it, or the time and patience required to create and maintain the perfect glass hair look.

Which brings the inevitable question: Is glass hair really for everyone? We’d say probably not, although everyone should try it just once, even if it’s just putting on a wig for starters. Unlike beach waves, this can easily turn out to be a hit-or-miss situation. And naturally, not all face shapes are cut out for a shorter bob, especially when it’s so straight and sleek.
