Camila Cabello has achieved a lot of fame and success in her own right. After departing the successful girl group known as Fifth Harmony, Cabello has managed to stay in the public eye due to all of the great music that she consistently puts out there. With all things considered, it should come as no surprise to anyone that she was able to have the chance to perform on Saturday Night Live recently.
While her performance on the popular sketch comedy show earned her positive critical reviews, fans weren't as kind. The reason for this sudden negative reaction? Fans are accusing Cabello of copying popular Welsh singer/songwriter MARINA, as well as American singer/songwriter Kali Uchis.
This accusation first came out due to a Twitter user retweeting a clip of Cabello's SNL performance with the caption "hold why is this literally a marina song". The Tweet has since garnered over 16 000 Retweets, over 95 000 Likes and over 600 replies. Many of those replies seemed to agree, saying that Cabello sounded like MARINA and that she even ripped off the Welsh singer's song "Karma" in her song "Liar". Other fans argued that "Liar" sounds similar to "Nuestro Planeta", a song by Uchis.
At first glance, all of this may seem like nothing more than just a coincidence. But it's worth pointing out that Cabello has been accusing of ripping off other pop stars before. Fans had claimed that her Romance aesthetic was a rip off of both Halsey and Lana Del Rey. Add in the fact that these accusations occurred just last month, and it's not a good look for Cabello.
In the previous controversy, both Halsey and Del Rey defended Cabello from these accusations. Neither artist believed that the former X Factor contestant was trying to rip off from them, and stood by her despite what fans were saying. With that, this scandal was put to bed pretty quickly.
As for this new accusation, none of the pop singers mentioned- not Cabello, MARINA or Uchis- have responded to it. It's unclear yet if anyone will do so in the near future. It'll be interesting to see what happens next during this particular controversy.
