Bobbi Brown, a legendary makeup artist and the founder of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, has been at the forefront of the beauty industry for the past three decades. Though she’s taken a step back from her company after selling it to Estée Lauder, she is still a force to be reckoned as the Contributing Beauty & Lifestyle Editor of Health magazine.

When she started her company, Bobbi Brown Essentials in 1991, the makeup artist wanted to highlight a woman’s natural look. Her original brown-based lipstick shades were a simple way for women to accentuate their lips. Her philosophy has always been, "Women want to look and feel like themselves, only prettier and more confident."

Brown, who graduated from Emerson College, has received the Glamour Woman of the Year Award, The Fashion Group International Night of Stars Beauty Award and the Jackie Robinson Foundation’s ROBIE Humanitarian Award. She was appointed by President Obama to the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiation and has been inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. She also holds honorary doctorates from Montclair State University, the Fashion Institute of Technology, Monmouth University and Emerson College.

Currently, Brown is focused on health and wellness through EVOLUTION_18, which markets probiotics and protein powders that have visible benefits for skin, hair and overall glow. Her latest project coincides with Brown’s new philosophy that considers that less is more.

“I think the biggest trend of 2019 is to be comfortable in your skin,” Brown says.

The beauty pioneer recognizes that social media has made beauty marketing easier. Though she respects the strides that Kim Kardashian and Huda Kattan have made, she is much more interested in the clean, no-makeup movement. Her ninth book, Beauty From the Inside Out, discussed how fruits and vegetables and wellness are the cornerstone of beauty. She believes that by consuming the right foods and properly hydrating, you inevitably look better.

“I don’t need to pile on the makeup or go to a dermatologist. When I look in the mirror, and I don’t look good, I say, ‘Okay what are you doing? Have you been going out too much? Have you been drinking too much? Have you been nibbling things you shouldn’t be?’ I really do believe that how you look and how you feel is one thing; it’s not separate,” she says.

Brown also swears by DIY facials, admitting that she uses olive oil and sea salt to make a really good scrub. She also favors a potato scrubber glove to exfoliate her legs and feet. She is, however, completely against lip fillers. “I can tell the second someone comes up to me if they’ve had their lips adjusted. I see no benefit. I see women that do just a little bit to the top—it looks weird to me. So what if you have thin lips?” she says.

Other products she swears by are charcoal capsules for an upset stomach, charcoal masks, and Hello Charcoal Toothpaste. Though instead of sheet masks, she uses apricot oil on her skin after washing and exfoliating.
