Ariana Grande Closed The First Weekend Of Coachella With A Performance Full of Surprises

Ariana Grande closed first weekend at Coachella with a performance full of surprises

Ariana Grande closed the first weekend of Coachella with a performance that was full of surprises for the audience, and the show was a massive hit. Ariana is only the fourth female artist to headline Coachella, following in the footsteps of Beyoncé, who headlined last year, Lady Gaga in 2017, and Icelandic singer Björk who has headlined twice, in 2002 and 2007. When Ariana was announced as one of the headlining artists of Coachella 2019 back in January, the twenty-five-year-old singer said she was both humbled and excited for the opportunity, thanking Coachella in a tweet. She has however performed before, joining Kygo on stage last year to sing a cover of Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing and her hit No Tears Left to Cry.

Ariana opened her two-hour long performance on Sunday night with God Is a Woman, and continued with two hits from her latest album Thank U, Next; Bad Idea and Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored. The latter samples the *NSYNC song, It Makes Me Ill, and it was then four of the five original *NSYNC members, Lance Bass, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, and Chris Kirkpatrick joined Ari on stage. Ariana and the boyband performed *NSYNC classic Tearin’ Up My Heart from 1997, and the pint-sized singer exclaimed that she had been waiting for that moment all her life.

As reported by People, Ariana had been teasing a possible collab with *NSYNC during the week leading up to Sunday's performance. The singer shared videos of herself singing along to *NSYNC hits and adorable throwback footage from when she attended one of their concerts as a toddler.

Another surprise cameo came from Nicki Minaj, who joined Ariana on stage to perform Side To Side and their joint hit song Bang Bang from 2014. The Dangerous Woman singer also welcomed Diddy and Mase on stage, and the trio performed Mo Money Mo Problems and paid tribute to hip-hop stars who have passed too soon; Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Nipsey Hussle, and Ariana's ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller.

Ariana Grande has taken time out of her Sweetener World Tour to perform at Coachella, and she will return for a second performance next weekend, on the very last day of Coachella. That day is also when Kanye West is holding his Sunday Service at the festival, so perhaps Ariana will accompany the rapper there for some spirituality.
