Though she may not look it, Adriana Lima has been walking the runway for over 20 years. Before her last walk Thursday, November 8th, Lima revealed to reporters that she will be retiring her wings. In 20 years, Adriana Lima has walked the VS runway sporting the Fantasy bra three times, had two daughters, and is part of the Victoria Secret Perfect 10. In the midst of all this, she has appeared in campaigns for brands such as BCBG, Keds, Anna Sui Jeans, Massimo, and many more, and has also appeared on magazine covers for Vogue and Marie Claire. Her look for her final walk will definitely be considered one of the highlights of her career.
Adriana Lima is native to Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, but her ancestry includes African, Japanese, Portuguese, French and Caribbean. It seems that her exotic beauty helped her stand out in a highly competitive modeling career – after all, she dived right in at the age of 13, entering the Ford Supermodel of the World competition and coming in second place. At 16, she moved to New York and joined the Elite Model Management to help propel her career into stardom.
Her first walk down the Victoria Secret runway was in 1999 and she officially signed with the company in 2000. While she is known as one of the most beautiful and desirable women in the world, in her personal time, her favorite way to spend time is with her daughters, four-year-old Sienne, and 7-year-old Valentina. As much as we see her workout routines and her Victoria Secret campaigns on Instagram, her page is equally filled with adorable snaps of Lima just hanging out with her two girls.
For fans who have been following Lima’s career, it’s been increasingly noticeable that her mindset has been shifting. For example, she shared with US Weekly, “Everyone knows that I love boxing but I changed some things and added functional training to my boxing routine. It’s about how you feel. Watch a movie that makes you smile. Listening to inspirational music. Get your nails done and dress yourself up.” As has become common knowledge, the Victoria Secret models adhere to vigorous exercise routines and eating habits. At a certain point, I think we can all agree that such a lifestyle just isn’t, as Lima put it, “functional” anymore.
She took a moment to say 'goodbye' and 'thank you' to Victoria Secret and her co-models after such a successful career during her last walk Thursday night. Images have been going viral, but for those who would like to see it for themselves, the Fashion Show will officially air Sunday, December 2.
After such an exciting career, the model is essentially retiring at 37 years old. She hasn’t yet revealed what the future will hold, but if her lifestyle changes and Instagram posts are any indication, we can guess spending more time with her daughters will be a big part of it.
