Some of our favorite couples ever were from the 90s and that probably has a lot to do with the era in which we grew up. The past few years have given us some bad breakups. We still can’t get over Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, or Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner splitting up. Our hearts are still trying to understand what happened with Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, but as bad as these breakups were, they were nothing compared to some of the breakups that we experienced in the 90s. We’re still thinking about some of them.
The 90s weren’t completely filled with heartbreak, however. Surprisingly enough some of those 90s couples stayed together. Hollywood usually doesn’t see that kind of longevity! It was a simpler time back then when we didn’t have social media and celebrities' DMs weren’t filled with messages from other people. There were a lot of 90s couples who fans adored and we are happy to say that they are still together.
Let’s go down a nostalgic journey together and relive the couples that stayed together and the ones that parted ways. Check out these nine couples from the 90s who are still surprisingly together (and 11 that didn’t make it).
20 Didn’t Make It: Demi Moore And Bruce Willis
Demi Moore and Bruce Willis were the power couple of the 90s and a lot of people thought they were going to make it because they were together for over 10 years.
The two met at a 1987 screening of the movie Stakeout and it wasn’t long after that when they started dating. They fell hard for each other because only four months later, the two were married. A year later, they had Rumer and within five years they had three children. They announced their split in 1998 to the dismay of fans, stating that their busy careers were to blame.
19 Still Together: Will and Jada Smith
Jada and Will Smith got married in 1997 so they have been married now for over 20 years. They are definitely one of the longest running couples in Hollywood. Their marriage may have lasted so long because Will considers Jada to be the center of the family.
"Just like in my house when I was growing up, I knew that my mother was the center," he shared to People. "If Mommy is straight, then everybody else will be. I am very clear at home that Jada’s physical, mental, spiritual health and comfort comes first."
That’s one of the best things we’ve ever heard.
18 Didn’t Make It: Johnny Depp and Kate Moss
Johnny Depp was certainly a leading man in the 90s and all the ladies wanted him. Johnny and Kate Moss dated for four years and he once filled a bathtub with $1,000 of champagne for her. When they finally broke up, Kate Moss was heartbroken.
"There's nobody that's ever really been able to take care of me. Johnny did for a bit. I believed what he said. Like if I said, 'What do I do?' he'd tell me. And that's what I missed when I left," she told Vanity Fair in 2012. "I really lost that gauge of somebody I could trust. Nightmare. Years and years of crying. Oh, the tears!"
17 Still Together: David and Victoria Beckham
These two have been together through thick and thin. Despite the mountains of media talk that David was stepping out from time to time, they remained a solid front. It’s clear that Victoria adores her husband and wants to keep her family together.
Their marriage hasn’t always been picture-perfect but they are determined to stay together and, honestly, we couldn’t imagine either of them with anyone else at this point.
During an interview with The Sunday Project, David said, “I feel like I’m doing okay, but it’s a struggle. To have been married for the amount of time that we have, you know, it’s always hard work. It becomes a little more complicated.”
16 Didn’t Make It: Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow has certainly had some handsome men on her arm over the years. She met Brad Pitt while filming Se7en and the two started dating. It was she that called it quits, which surprised every female in the world.
“I’ve (…) up so many relationships,” she confessed to Marie Claire. “I’m actually a pretty good friend, and a good sister and daughter and mother, but I’m at my potentially most vulnerable... in the romantic slice of the pie. It’s taken me a lot of work to get to the place where I have a good romantic relationship. So Brad Pitt, if you’re listening. I (…) that up, Brad.”
15 Still Together: Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick
These two got married in 1997 and have been together ever since. Interestingly, they were introduced by Matthew’s brother and quickly fell in love. They share three children together and have never looked happier.
Sarah didn’t have a traditional wedding dress on her big day. Instead, she picked a black one. "I never thought about a wedding dress. Never. Had not one daydream about it," she told People. "At one point I just simply remember thinking, 'God, I really hope he asks me to marry him.' I don't know when or why. It was fairly early on."
That’s the sweetest story.
14 Didn’t Make It: Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder
Now this was one couple who broke everyone’s heart when they broke up. Johnny and Winona met on the set of Edward Scissorhands and fell in love. They were engaged in the 90s and Johnny even tattooed “Winona Forever” on his body, which in hindsight probably wasn’t the best idea.
"I had just done Dracula and Edward Scissorhands. I had just had my first real break-up, the first heartbreak," Ryder told Elle in 2009 of her split from Depp. "And I think it was really ironic because, like, everybody else just thought I had everything in the world, you know, I had no reason to be depressed, everything was sort of at its peak, but inside I was completely lost."
13 Still Together: Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos
These two were both soap opera stars in the 90s and they met on the set of All My Children. They started dating and eloped to Las Vegas after just one year together. Since then, they've had three kids together.
Mark stated in an interview with Fox News that their marriage has lasted so long because he’s so in love. “I’m crazy about my wife,” he said. “We both come from families, our parents are still together — family is super important to us. We have three great kids, and that also bonds you, having that experience together.”
12 Didn’t Make It: Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr.
This is a couple who was madly in love and probably could have made the distance if it hadn't been for the fact that Robert Downey Jr. had a lot of issues back in the day and Sarah Jessica couldn’t deal with it. She had to make a decision to leave but it broke her heart to do so.
“There was a huge amount of time spent making sure he was okay. At a certain point, I had the courage to say, ‘I’m going to walk away, and I’m just going to pray that you don’t die,’” she told People.
11 Still Together: Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr.
This is a couple that we absolutely adored from the 90s and we love that they met when filming I Know What You Did Last Summer. They continued working together but eventually left Hollywood for a normal life and it’s probably the reason why they are still together.
Gellar told Us magazine that communication is key in their marriage. “Communicate. That’s the key. It’s about being present. Listening is the most important thing.” Prinze Jr., however, told Us, “We still make each other laugh. And we treat each other with respect.” Both pieces of advice make sense to us.
10 Didn’t Make It: Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe
These two met on the set of Cruel Intentions. They dated onscreen and then offscreen as well. They were a smokin’ item in the 90s and eventually got married and had two children. They broke up because Phillippe got involved with a costar. Since then, they seem to have maintained a healthy friendship, which is great for their kids.
"We got to meet up as a family and took a walk through Central Park with the kids, and it was funny," Phillippe told HuffPost Live. "We were reminiscing...because [Reese and I] shot a lot of Cruel Intentions [there], so there we were with [our kids] Ava and Deacon... and they were tripping out on the fact that we were there shooting a movie before they were even a thought in our minds."
9 Still Together: Faith Hill and Tim McGraw
It’s been over 20 years for this couple, who got married in 1996. They have had their ups and downs over the years but they came out stronger than ever. They share three children and still tour together so it’s a match made in country music heaven.
Tim admitted to Jimmy Fallon that it was love at first sight for him. "I looked at her and was smitten right away," he said. Fallon asked if the feeling was mutual, to which he quipped, "I put in a lot of time, are you kidding me?"
We love hearing celebrity love stories.
8 Didn’t Make It: Cameron Diaz and Matt Dillon
Cameron and Matt met on the set of There’s Something About Mary and they hit it off right away. They were definitely a cute couple back then. They dated for a few years but broke up because Matt wanted to settle down but Cameron wasn’t ready.
Cameron was much younger than he was at the time and her career was just getting up to speed so she didn’t think it was a good time to get married. She certainly took a long time to finally settle down so maybe she just wasn’t the marrying type.
7 Still Together: Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton
Cate Blanchett met screenwriter Andrew Upton in 1996 on the set of a TV show. He asked her to marry him only three weeks into their relationship and they got married a year later. Something must have been working because they have been together ever since. They have three sons together and have also adopted a daughter.
Cate considers her marriage to be a “great love affair,” which is one of the cutest things we’ve ever heard. When speaking about how Andrew proposed to her, Cate told E! Online, "I cooked him the worst meal. I somehow decided that to stuff a trout with walnuts and goat's cheese would be a good idea. He ate it and then he asked me to marry him so clearly he was, I don't know, hallucinating. He realized I couldn't cook."
6 Didn’t Make It: Jennifer Lopez and P. Diddy
These two had a complicated relationship which was probably why it didn’t last. They were certainly considered to be an iconic power couple in the 90s when they started dating in 1999. Throughout their relationship, Diddy got in trouble with the law numerous times and there were rumors about other women.
Jennifer finally called it quits in 2001 and moved on with her life. Fans really loved seeing them together and were saddened by the breakup. Diddy has made comments in the media over the years about reuniting with her, but we’re pretty sure she had enough of the games when she was with him the first time.
5 Still Together: Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness
Hugh met his wife in 1995 and at the time, she was also an actress. They met before he was big in Hollywood on the set of a TV series, Correlli. She’s actually 13 years older than him and their relationship has experienced criticism because of their age difference, which isn’t anything new in Hollywood.
Fans have gone so far as to wonder why Hugh doesn’t go off with one of his younger costars, which is quite unfair. They have had their struggles as Deborra experienced many miscarriages throughout their marriage before they decided to adopt, but they are still very much happily married.
4 Didn’t Make It: Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt
This was one golden couple that we did not want to see break up for anything and the split surprised the world. Of course, we all know it had everything to do with Brad's Mr. & Mrs. Smith costar, Angelina Jolie. It was a sad day indeed when these two split and we’re not sure if Aniston ever got over it.
Now that the two of them are single again, fans are keeping their fingers crossed that they will find their way back to each other. Is that too much to ask? Some people are just destined to be together.
3 Didn’t Make It: Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears
When Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake got together we thought finally all the stars in the universe had aligned. These two pop stars seemed perfect for each other. They were in the same business and their careers were rocking at the time.
When they broke up, Justin released the song "Cry Me A River," which was all about their relationship. That’s the risk you take when you date a musician - you can easily be put in a song if things go sour. Just ask Taylor Swift!
2 Didn’t Make It: Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman met on the set of Days of Thunder. He was the handsome Hollywood star and at the time she was just famous in Australia. Tom Cruise saw her in an old film and wanted her for the part in the race car movie.
Kidman described her first encounter with Cruise in the sweetest way to Vanity Fair, saying, “I remember being so nervous and seeing Tom Cruise drive up in a Porsche . . . He got out of the car and walked through the door, and I was like, ‘Ah.’ My jaw dropped.”
1 Didn’t Make It: Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow
After her engagement to Brad Pitt ended in 1997, Gwyneth started dating Ben Affleck. Seriously, this girl knows how to land leading men. They dated for three years, but sometimes were on and off. They even starred in the movie Bounce together.
During an interview with Howard Stern, Gwyneth stumbled all over herself describing the relationship with Ben as a “lesson.” She told him that Affleck “was not in a good place in his life to have a girlfriend at the time.” She said her parents “were OK with the two of us not being together,” although they “appreciated how he’s super intelligent.” Okay, then.
