Dr. Phil has come a long way since he was a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show. His time on that show catapulted him to superstardom where he received a show of his own. He’s a household name and now that he has a show of his own, he’s been interviewing people (and even some celebrities) and helping them with things that are going on in their lives. There are a lot of people who even reach out to Dr. Phil and ask him to help them or their families.

“Everything we do in life has a payoff,” he once wrote in a piece talking about teaching other people how to treat you for The Huffington Post. “You go to work to make money. You go swimming because you enjoy it, or it helps you stay healthy. The same is true for human interactions.”

There have been a lot of people who have been part of the show and even though they didn’t do well on it, it made them famous. Sometimes it’s just 15 minutes of fame, while other times they created a career from their appearance. And, there are others who have appeared on the show and wished that they hadn’t. Danielle Bregoli arrived on Dr. Phil as a disrespectful teen who her mother didn’t know what to do with. The girl had a lot of trouble with the law and her mother wanted some help. Her behavior didn’t change at all because she was on the show and a lot of people were surprised by what they saw. The audience was laughing at her and she retaliated by saying, “Catch me outside, how about that?” but it came out “Cash me ousside howbow dah?”

Because of that, she was given the name “Cash Me Outside Girl.” Many people thought that she and her behavior would disappear into obscurity but instead, she got offered a rap career and became a social media personality.

Octomom was quite the phenomenon for a period of time. In 2009, Nadya Suleman gave birth to octuplets which was something that we would have thought wasn’t even possible. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the mom also had six other children at home that she was taking care of. She went on Dr. Phil to talk about the difficulties that she was facing as a single mother.

“I find this woman very likable,” Dr. Phil said after his sit-down with her. “This is not an evil woman. She doesn’t know what she doesn’t know. She took a chance, which I think she did in concert with her doctor, and I think you’ve got to look really hard at the decision-making of that professional to do that implantation.”

The reason this couple gained so much attention on the show was that the husband controlled his wife. In many relationships, there is often a dominant partner and this was the case for Elizabeth and Cory. Unfortunately for the couple, their relationship started to spiral and that was why they found themselves on The Dr. Phil Show.

While on the show, Elizabeth explained that Cory needed to be “king of the castle.” She stated how initially she was attracted to that side of Cory but then his need for control started to take over their whole life. Cory needed to check her phone records, monitor her social media pages and even check her emails.

Anyone that has watched Making A Murderer on Netflix either sits on one side of the fence or another. Some people believe he’s guilty of his crimes whereas a lot of people believe he’s an innocent man sitting in jail. Steven Avery started corresponding with Lynn Hartman while in prison and the two started dating.

That was all Dr. Phil needed to hear to get her on the show. She came on bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and talked about how she was falling for Steven Avery, but by the time the show was done she was in tears and feeling rather foolish about her decisions.

In 2013, Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o was part of a catfishing scheme. He had fallen for a woman online but had never met her in person. It turned out to be a man named Ronaiah Tuiasosopo who had fallen in love with Te’o and pretended to be a woman. Ronaiah ended up on the show to explain why he did what he did.

“I pretty much had this escape of Lennay and this was where my heart had pretty much invested, not just time, but all my energy went into this,” he said on the show. “As twisted and confusing as it may be, yeah, I cared for this person.”

Amber went on the show because she was having a lot of issues in her life because she stopped taking medication that she really needed to be on. Throughout her life, she had been diagnosed with over 20 different kinds of mental illnesses and was prescribed medication for it. She believed, however, that she was completely normal and didn’t need to be on any kind of medication.

Unfortunately, due to her behavior, she ended up losing her children but still didn’t see that she had a problem. It was Dr. Phil who convinced her that she needed to get some help.

Nick Gordon was the boyfriend of Bobbi Kristina (Whitney Houston’s daughter). He was invited on the show and before it really got underway, Nick was crying, or sobbing would be a better description.

"I lost the most legendary singer ever, and I'm scared to lose Krissy," he shrieked. He was so upset that he started hyperventilating. Dr. Phil warned him, "I think you definitely need to go to medically supervised rehab. You can't help Bobbi Kristina the way you are…This is not healthy. You have to get yourself cleaned up. You have to man up. You have to straighten up."

Gordon didn’t like that Dr. Phil had told him to “man up” so he walked off the set.

But for 21-year-old Melissa, she wasn’t interested in being home alone. Her OCD came in the form of wanting to be more attractive and making her sister less attractive. “I want to be prettier than Justine,” she said. It had become an obsession to the point that she couldn’t have a normal conversation.

She admitted that her actions had damaged her relationship with her sister and that her life was out of order. When Dr. Phil brought her sister Justine out on stage, Melissa flipped out and wouldn’t even be on the same stage as her.

She was just a teen and yet she admitted that she was spending 16-18 hours a day on social media. She told Dr. Phil that she even slept with her phone strapped to her hand. If she went somewhere, she would literally get an anxiety attack if she had no Wi-Fi. If her parents punished her by taking away her phone, she would literally fight them for it. She was so erratic on the show that we started to understand how her daughter got into the trouble that she did. At one point Dina told Dr. Phil, “It feels like we’re on a date.” She kept wiping her eyes and asked, “Are we rolling?” Dr. Phil wasn’t happy about her behavior and told her she was “phony and inauthentic.” She then started crying about her ex and said, “I don't want to be on camera…It's hard to know when to get out…God, it's so quiet in here.” He finally said to her, “Do whatever you want to do.”

Nicholas Brendon had a bright career ahead of him when he was starring on TV shows such as Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Criminal Minds. He was another star that was  drinking too much and he was on the show for the second time trying to get help.

“I have a lot of shame," he said, his voice breaking. "I look at my life and just think [of] how things could have been different. It's hard not to get caught in that cycle…I went to rehab for the first time in '03, and it's like, 'What if I had stayed sober that whole time?' I think I'm also afraid to ask for help."

Dr. Phil had Farrah Abraham on the show because he wanted to confront her about her parenting skills. They talked about a lot of things that had been in the news regarding Farrah but the only thing that upset Farrah was when he mentioned her run-in with the law.

"I just think you're being really negative…and it's upsetting," she said through tears. "I wouldn't want to [hurt] someone, I wouldn't want to (…) someone, I wouldn't want to put myself in the situation of driving my car because I thought I had to go get my sister." After some more muttering, she sniffed, "I'm just upset at you now. I am accountable."

Dr. Phil replied with, "You're upset because I ask you questions you don't have answers for."

Amy’s Baking Company was on an episode of Kitchen Nightmares and it didn’t go the way that the owners thought it would. They were labeled as villains and they got a lot of backlash for it. They went on The Dr. Phil Show to tell their side of the story. Dr. Phil asked them some tough questions and they continued to defend themselves.

They couldn’t deal with the criticism that they were getting from people online because of the show. “You have to learn,” Dr. Phil told them. “These are nameless, faceless keyboard bullies. And if they can get a reaction, they’re thrilled.”

"Is this an intervention?" she snapped. "Because it feels like one. I really want to go home." She eventually told Dr. Phil that she’s "never been able to trust" anyone, but she wanted to trust him. Even so, she walked out on the show saying, "I have a lot of anxiety right now. I can't."

Nick Carter may have been one of the stars of the band The Backstreet Boys but at one point his life spiraled out of control. He was on the show to talk to Dr. Phil about how he hit rock bottom after his sister passed away. He didn’t go to her funeral and his family life was not good.

"I started to get blamed by the rest of the family. They were blaming me for the death. I felt it was unfair, especially with all the things I have done and continue to do for them," he said, adding, "The effect it had on me was that things needed to change…I felt like I had to do something and show them that I'm being a better person."

Lauren Kavanaugh went through a lot in her childhood. She was locked away by her parents when she was three years old until she was nine years old. When authorities found her, she was underweight and hadn’t grown properly. Despite the things that she had gone through, she was a very strong person.

“My life’s been pretty hard,” she told Dr. Phil when she appeared on his show. “I’ve been struggling a lot. I hardly sleep anymore. My anxiety is terrible.”

She was on for two episodes and Dr. Phil made sure she was aware of just how brave she was.

Of course, how can we leave out how Dr. Phil himself became famous for appearing on an episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show? He met Oprah in the '90s and it changed his life. She actually hired him to help her with a defamation trial she was dealing with. She liked him so much that she brought him on her show.

“I think the most important thing I’ve learned from Oprah is the impact of generosity and spirit,” Dr. Phil told Business Insider. “Oprah has what I call a ‘health engendering personality.’ When she’s around people, they feel better about themselves than they did before she got there.”
