25 Things Nicole Kidman And Keith Urban Keep On The DL

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban are one of the longest-running couples in Hollywood and a lot of that has to do with the fact that they have been very private about their lives. Sure, they may do an interview from time to time and discuss their relationship, but it’s very minimal at best. They answer the questions but they aren’t gushing about all the details of their marriage. Even their children are kept out of the spotlight as much as possible.

It appears as if they try really hard to make sure that their marriage isn’t going to be another statistic. What kinds of things are they not talking about? There are usually reasons why couples keep things private.

25 It Wasn’t Love At First Sight For Him

via YouTube

The two met at a gala in 2005 but Nicole admitted to Vanity Fair that it wasn’t "love at first sight" for her husband. "It wasn't like the earth shook," she said in 2007.

She also told Ellen DeGeneres that it took Keith Urban four months to even ask her out. "I'm like, 'You didn't love me at first sight, you didn't notice me,' and he's like, 'Yes I did but I just didn't let on,'" she recalls. "But we kind of met and then about four months later he called me."

It’s hard to believe that anyone wouldn’t take notice of Nicole right away.

24 She Wanted To Marry Him Right Away

For Nicole Kidman, she knew that she wanted to marry Keith Urban right away. She was only dating him for a month when she told Elle magazine that she knew he was the one for her. "I'm spontaneous," she said. "I jump in. I kind of like getting married and then getting to know each other. I know that it sounds incredibly strange, but to me, it's a more natural process."

Their relationship went into overdrive and things started moving quite quickly. "We got married very quickly and we got to know each other when we were married," she said.

23 Kidman Helped Him Get The Help He Needed

via Pinterest

It seemed as if as soon as they got married, some issues in their relationship started to crop up. In 2005, Urban had to check into a rehabilitation center due to drinking. These were obviously issues that he would have had long before he got married but maybe marrying Kidman was the catalyst to him making a big change.

She was clearly the reason why he decided to go and get some help. She would have likely told him that it was not something she was going to deal with. “Sometimes your mistakes are you biggest virtues. You learn so much from the mistake. Those things that you think are the worst [things] that [are] happening to you can somehow turn around and be the greatest opportunity,” Kidman once told Vanity Fair.

22 Nicole Needed Him To Follow Her Moral Code

via Instagram

If Kidman was the reason that he checked in, it’s likely because she follows a certain moral code that she’s not going to change for anyone. In 2014, Keith admitted in an interview with W magazine that Kidman staged an intervention to get him the help that he needed. She has spoken herself in interviews about how important it is to follow your own moral code, as Baby Gaga reports her saying:

“Have no regrets. Every relationship leads you to where you're meant to be. Learn to be comfortable with being alone. Learn to be comfortable with saying no to people; we put everybody else before ourselves. Read great literature; don't get all your information from TV. Define your moral code - nobody else is going to give you that. Find it yourself. Keep asking questions, keep challenging. You don't have to conform. Rebellion creates character. And, as my mother always said to me, 'Don't let anyone break your spirit!'"

21 They Have Been Through A Lot Together And Pulled Through

via Instagram

Having to stage an intervention as a newlywed couple could certainly put a lot of strain on your relationship and yet the two have pulled through over a decade of media attention, the gossip mill, and Keith’s own personal issues.

"It was like, 'If I don't choose this moment to do the right thing and do something that's going to give me life, all of the things I'm scared of losing, I'm going to lose anyway,'" he confessed to People. Urban also stated that his stint in rehab was "very, very hard" on his new wife. She had his back, however, stating to Vanity Fair, "It was just another twist in my life: Here it goes. Hold on, and off we go!"

20 They’ve Admitted That They Were Two Very Lonely People

via Instagram

Being a celebrity can be a lonely existence because you can never be quite sure if the people that are in your life are there for the right reasons. Kidman has stated that part of the reason why she got together with Urban was that they were lonely.

"I think we were two lonely people," she told Vanity Fair. "I would probably say that two very lonely people managed to meet at a time when they could open themselves to each other. We were a mixture of frightened and brave. I wanted a partner and someone to share my life.”

19 They Never Text Each Other

via Instagram

It’s hard to believe that in our age of texting there are couples out there who don’t actually text each other. But that seems to be something that these two aren’t interested in. "My husband and I never text each other," Nicole told DuJour. "We never do. Once in a blue moon, we'll text. But mainly we say, 'I want to hear your voice.'"

She added, "That's very unusual, but we've been together for 10 years. We started like that and we haven't changed it. We don't email each other either. So it's about trying to keep it as... personal as possible."

18 He Still Writes Her Love Letters

via Instagram

Any girl who can find a man to write her love letters is a lucky one indeed. In the same interview with DuJour, Kidman stated that Urban will write her a love letter for every day that they are apart. That is something that certainly is rare in the world.

“She’s my best friend. I’ve never had anybody on the planet that knows me as well as she does. I would love to have been worthy of somebody like Nic, but I was a long way from it when we met. Somehow we just found there was love there, real love. I literally just feel like the luckiest guy on the planet,” he told People.

17 When They Have Issues They Are Candid About Them

via Life & Style

They may be one of the more private couples in Hollywood but when they are dealing with issues, they don’t have a problem admitting that they struggle. Urban admitted that his song "The Fighter" had a lot to do with their struggles as a couple.

"Someone said one time, 'If your marriage isn't your priority, you're not married,' and I thought, for me that's so true," he said. "So as long as I keep her as a priority, everything else sort of seems to work. And when I don't keep it as a priority, it's … Jenga."

Keeping your partner a priority is always a good thing.

16 Kmart And KFC Make Them Just Like Us

You might assume that people with millions of dollars at their disposal would never step foot in a KFC or Kmart but you would be wrong. You might be surprised at how many celebrities like to snag a good deal as well.

Nicole and Keith were spotted this year in Chatswood Chase mall in Sydney’s Lower North Shore and they were having a finger lickin’ good time. They stopped for a late-night dinner at KFC and went on a shopping spree that included a trip to Kmart. They certainly looked like two average people taking a night to do some shopping.

One fellow shopper told Daily Mail, “They did a big shop in Kmart. The staff were beside themselves taking photos! They didn't have to line up, they got a special cashier.”

15 Her Family Always Comes First

via Closer Weekly

It can certainly be hard for any Hollywood actress to try to juggle her career and family, and it's more difficult when she has a husband that also goes on tour! Kidman was asked to reprise her role in a London play called "Photograph 51" and she put the vote to her family.

"Both my kids said 'no' and my husband said 'I hope not,'" Kidman told The Today Show, according to the Daily Mail. "I would have loved to have done that on Broadway, but I love my kids and my husband far more." Sometimes sacrifices have to be made.

14 He Thinks He’s A Better Man Because Of Her

via Instagram

Keith Urban has stated that his wife is an open book when it comes to their marriage. She doesn’t keep things hidden from him, so he never has to guess what's on her mind. He has stated to People that being in a relationship with her has made him a better man and that’s the way it should be.

"Nic is so unbelievably open; she doesn't keep things in or bottle them up. She's really a great communicator," he told trade publication HITS. "Because of her, if I open up, every day, I'm listening and growing and learning. If I'm a better man, it's because of her."

13 His Actions Prove His Love For Her

via Instagram

Sometimes Urban and Kidman find themselves apart because they have two very different schedules, but they do their best to show each other they love each other. They try not to have more than seven days apart from each other.

When one of her plays was on stage, Urban was also in the middle of a tour. "I said, 'It's too much for you to have to fly all the way back, don't worry,' and he said, 'I'm flying,'" Kidman told People. "He flew 10 hours to come and be with me for the night, and then he flew back and did a gig. That for me is love in action. That's extraordinary. But I would do the same for him and that's what we've committed to as a couple."

12 He Learned That He Was Loving Her The Wrong Way

via Easy Weddings UK

When you are in a relationship, it can be easy to assume that you just love your partner the same way that you want to be loved, but that’s not always the case. Not everyone wants or needs to be loved the same way.

"I had such a learning curve in our marriage! When she'd get scared, I'd think she was angry; then I'd get defensive, go tearing out the driveway at 90 miles an hour … " Urban told People. "What she needs...is for me to stay, to be close, to hear her."

He added, "'Get Closer:' the album title alone was literally from this new awareness I had with this reality of how to react. When things are tough or upsetting, it's about pulling her close. That's what she needs, and I had to learn it."

11 He’s Been Intimidated By Her At Times

via W Magazine

Keith Urban has admitted in interviews that he found his wife intimidating when he first met her. He told Oprah that he felt in awe of Kidman, saying,

“She walked into the green room where I was, and I said, ‘There she is, there she is.’ I swear to you, she glided across the room, like floated. I don’t know how she did it. It’s like she’s standing there, and she didn’t walk. It was out of this world.”

That’s a pretty extraordinary thing for a man to say about the woman in his life and he obviously thinks the world of her.

10 Fans Were Allowed Outside Their Wedding Venue

via Closer Weekly

The couple decided to get married after a year of dating. They tied the knot at the Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel on the grounds of St. Patrick’s estate in Sydney, Australia. There were fans outside the venue and no one chased them away. They were allowed to be there to enjoy the day, but things were kept more private inside the chapel.

Kidman invited celebrity friends from Australia, such as Hugh Jackman, Rupert Murdoch, Russell Crowe and Naomi Watts. The couple wasn’t interested in gifts and instead asked for their guests to donate to the Sydney Children’s Hospital.

9 They Had A Rocky Start Cause She’s Cold As Ice

via Vanity Fair

Nicole Kidman has admitted that there are times when she can seem cold to people who don’t know her that well. This may have had a lot to do with why it took her and Urban four months to get together!

Kidman admitted to US Weekly that she can be a ball of emotion and at times can go hot and cold: “I would describe myself as emotional and highly strung. If something upsets me, it really upsets me. If something makes me angry, I get really angry. But it's all very upfront. I can't hide it. I'm also loyal and I hope I'm fun.”

8 Nicole Doesn’t Like To Be Left Alone

via Closer Weekly

Unfortunately for these two, there wasn’t much of a honeymoon phase when they got married because Urban had to go off to rehab. Not too many people would have been okay with that and would have bailed. But Kidman stuck through it all. She wanted to work on their marriage, but it was a hard road for her. We don’t always get to hear what’s going on in Kidman’s personal life but she did admit to Vanity Fair that she needs to share her life with another person, saying,

“Part of our job as human beings is to share our knowledge and share the things we've learned. So we can either save people from making the same mistakes or give them hope.”

7 She Doesn’t Fear Being Asked Anything

Via Just Jared

Nicole Kidman has probably had hundreds of interviews over the years and she has said that she really doesn’t worry about the questions that she is going to be asked. There probably isn’t an actor out there that loves being asked personal questions, unless of course, you are a Kardashian. But Kidman doesn’t let that stuff bother her.

She told People, “You can ask me pretty much anything. There'll be things [where] I'll go, 'That feels a little too personal.' But most things I don't have a fear of being asked about.” At the end of the day, she can just choose not to answer a question.

6 Kissing Alexander Skarsgard Was No Biggie

via Today Show

Nicole Kidman received a lot of flak for kissing her co-star Alexander Skarsgard after he won an Emmy, especially since it was right in front of her husband. There was a lot of talk about rumored problems in her marriage.

She went on The Graham Norton Show and explained the kiss. "I kissed my husband too!" she said as the host showed a photo of her with Skarsgard. She continued, "I did kiss [Skarsgard], but you gotta understand, I did everything with Alex [while on set]."

Attempting to put the matter to rest, Kidman then asserted, "I've got an amazing, supportive, gorgeous husband who I love more than anything in the world."

5 Urban Has Been Bothered By Some Of Her Work

via Instagram

When Kidman signed on for her role in Big Little Lies, it meant that she had to play the character of a physically abused wife. She admitted to W magazine that her husband was disturbed by the role. She said, "When [Keith] watched Big Little Lies he was disturbed; he says that when he hears me scream or cry from a certain place in my soul it's almost like it goes straight into him and he has a visceral reaction immediately."

She was also affected by the role. "Luckily I have a partner who is artistic, so he understands what it takes to support that," she said. "[He] would hold me, and I was really upset at times."

4 They Have Been Known To Trick Fans On The Red Carpet

via SheKnows

Nicole and Keith have been known to trick us when they appear on the red carpet together. What we see is not always what is a reality. Kidman is a tall woman. She hovered over Tom Cruise and she does the same with Keith Urban. Yet, when Kidman and Urban are on the red carpet together, they always appear to be the same height.

Yahoo Lifestyle states that they use red carpet illusion on us by using specific poses and carefully chosen clothing so that they appear to be the same height.

3 She Thinks Media Attention On Her Hands Is Lame

via Hollywood Reporter

The media will often focus on certain body parts when it comes to celebrities and in this case, the media is focused on Kidman’s hands. At the 2017 Oscars when Kidman was photographed clapping, people noticed that it looked like she was only clapping with her palms. They started calling her “Grinch hands” and “seal clapping.”

When she appeared on the Kyle and Jackie O Show she stated that she had been wearing an expensive and large ring that she worried about damaging. "It was absolutely gorgeous, and I was terrified of damaging it. It's like, are there not more important things to be focused on than the seal clap?"

2 Urban Thought That She Was Unapproachable

via Country Fancast

Sometimes when we are meeting people for the first time, we can give off a different side of ourselves that isn’t really authentic and that could change how the other person perceives us. That’s why they say the first impression of a person is everything.

Keith admitted to People that he was very shy about meeting Kidman because she seemed unapproachable being the mega-star that she was. “There was a split moment where she wasn't with anybody, and I thought, 'I'll just go up and say hi.' There was that moment of waiting for the next thing to be said, [and] I didn't know if I was bothering her or what was going on, so I just said, 'Nice to meet you,' and walked away. Then I thought, 'Was I supposed to say more?' I went back over and apologized and we just started talking. It just really clicked."

1 Urban Is Just As Open As She Is (Maybe Even More)

via People

Keith Urban doesn't have a problem discussing his relationship with Nicole. He usually says what’s on his mind. He is a songwriter, after all, and they typically put their lives in their music. He has no problem stating that she is the driving force in their relationship and that he’s learned a lot from her.

He also says that the two of them can be really goofy together. He told People, “We’re pretty goofy. I mean there is no question that that’s what we’re like. Anybody that knows us on a personal level knows that’s exactly what we’re like most of the time.”
