It’s not hard to look around and see that our generation is OBSESSED with eyelashes (we’d like to thank the Kardashian family for that obsession). We go to great lengths to get them to be the perfect length and that includes spending an arm and a leg. These days, we go as far as to get extensions professionally done, which isn’t cheap (can start at around $150) and it takes up most of our days to get them put on properly. Others will attempt to go the budget route and simply by lash extensions at your local Ulta store and glue them on ourselves.
But what if you don’t want to take the path of glue and/or empty our pocketbooks with expensive false lashes? Well, you can go grab the most expensive mascaras that designers throw out there, or you can go the drugstore route, which isn’t a bad option at all since all these brands work wonders. AND they don’t bust your budget at all. They truly are magic if you’re in a hurry but still want to impress with the length of your lashes.
Here are 25 drugstore mascaras that affordable but actually work!
Long lashes are only a skip and a hop away from you – probably literally if you happen to live above a drugstore in the city.
Maybelline Volum’ Express The Rocket Mascara only costs $6.99.
And that’s not including when it goes on sale from time to time, either!
And it's about as awesome as it gets – especially if you’re looking for just one magic coat before running out the door. It comes in numerous shades, the most dramatic being their “very black”.
“Full. Long. Refined,” are the three words CoverGirl uses to describe this particular mascara. The brand describes: “This mascara was designed to give you beautiful and teased lashes. The last teasing mascara comb easily lets you tease event the tiniest corner lashes. Your eyelashes will have a dark, full and voluminous look that lasts all day.”
This particular mascara goes for $8.99 (at Ulta) and comes in various shades. The aesthetic appeal of the bottle itself is actually also a draw, especially if you’re a fan of pink.
Have super short, thin, and pale lashes? Don’t worry – Rimmel has you completely covered!
And not only do they have your beauty covered, but they also have your wallet’s back too.
Rimmel ScandalEyes is pretty cheap, even by drugstore standards, and only goes for around $5.40 on Amazon.com.
The downside is that you really shouldn’t rub your eyes when wearing it (as some users have pointed out), but you really shouldn’t do that with any mascara – they’re not all bulletproof unless they’re… well, waterproof.
You can never go wrong when it comes to the L’Oreal brand. Period. “L’Oreal Voluminous Original Volume Building Mascara is uniquely formulated to build lashes 5X their natural thickness, for a full and dramatic look,” the Ulta website says.
“The Volume Maximizing Brush thickens lashes evenly and smoothly, leaving them soft with virtually no flakes, smudges, or clumps.” Ulta sells Voluminous Original Mascara for $7.99, but you can probably find it for cheaper on Amazon and other websites or at other drugstores.
The classics never fail, especially when it comes to this particular brand of mascara. The throwback hot pink and vivid lime green seems to remind us of our middle school days.
But the thing is, this mascara is a pure gem, a must have, and only $5.99.
“Lots of impact. Lots of style,” Ulta says. “Maybelline Great Lash Lots of Lashes Mascara has an exclusive great little grabber brush that lets you easily reach all of your lashes to multiply their impact.”
The proof is right in the title: this mascara is truly paradise on the lashes. “Take your lashes to paradise with voluptuous volume & intense length,” the L’Oreal website describes.
“Soft wavy bristle brush holds the maximum amount of formula. 200+ bristles catch every lash for a dramatic volumizing effect. [The] silky smooth formula glides on evenly and easily. This volumizing and lengthening mascara delivers a full lash fringe that’s feather soft. No flaking. No smudging. No clumping.” Paradise Mascara goes for $9.99 at your local Ulta store.
If it’s a bird of paradise-like look you’re going for at a low cost, look no further than CoverGirl.
“Get peacock worthy flare with this COVERGIRL mascara,” the CoverGirl website describes.
It continues: “Our Peacock Flare Mascara features a feather-fan wand designed to catch, coat and separate each and every lash. Lashes will have full on length and definition with this volumizing mascara.”
It’s not too bad on the ol’ pocketbook either. It sells for only $6.84 on Amazon and $7.94 at Walmart.com!
You can never go wrong with CoverGirl – any girl on the budget will tell you the same thing. They’re a purse essential.
The description of this plumping mascara on their website says it all: “Our Plumpify blastPRO Mascara plumpifies your lashes with a volume boost for full lashes! This volumizing mascara has a specialized, double-action brush that vertically lifts lashes from their roots, guaranteeing plumping without the clumping – a whole new look in lashes, plumpified!”
The mascara goes for $7.29 at Walgreens.com.
Even I’ll admit, out of all the mascaras in this group, I feel that Falsies is the one that works the absolute best without fail every single time. “Volum Express The Falsies Washable Mascara creates more visible eyelashes for a glam look,” the Maybelline website says when describing the look and feel of the mascara.
And we couldn't agree more; it does absolute wonders!
“The clump-free formula delivers bigger, thicker, and fuller lashes for dramatic volume. The unique and flexible wand helps to lift and separate delivering the look of more lashes.” The shade Blackest Black sells for $7.77 on Maybelline.com.
I’ll admit that the appeal of the shiny packaging draws the eye quite a bit. But this particular mascara isn’t just another pretty face, it actually works wonders as well (has a little pricier price tag at $10.99, but it works).
“Our first Primer and Mascara for a show-stopping lash effect,” the L'oreal website describes the mascara and the primer. “Super-volumizing primer builds dramatic volume on every lash and creates an ultra smooth base to maximize mascara performance. Super-extending Mascara with a fiber-rich black formula.
This particular mascara seems to tackle all the problems one seems to have when attempting to extend the length of their eye-lashes: Revlon’s Ultimate All-In-One Mascara tackles volume, length, definition, lift, all while drenching your lashes in rich, intense color.
The All-In-One Mascara goes for only $8.49 on the Ulta website.
And it's worth every penny! “The hollow core designed to deposit formal for mega lash impact and the unique mini oval shape for easy application,” the Ulta site says when it comes to the mascara features.
There are a lot of mascaras that claim to be THE “one coat and done” type, but very few live up to the test. Product reviews (as seen on influenster.com) are proving that the title holds up to its name.
“It definitely gives your lashes volume, length & definition,” one review raved. “It conditions too! It’s lash-loving, non-irritating formula with keratin is hypoallergenic. Suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. Easy to apply. Didn’t clump at all! You only need one coat, but it is build-able if you’d like a more dramatic look.”
Sure, I’ll admit was the bright orange tube that caught my eye. Not only that, but the cheap price tag ($4) is also a major selling point. But does it actually work?
“I put on two coats and it adds a lot of length and dimension to my lashes,” one reviewer on MakeupAlley.com writes.
“This mascara is AMAZING!!!! Seriously, what a little gem! I have thin, long sparse lashes and this does everything it claims to do; it thickens, gives a fanned out effect, defines, and it leaves my lashes feeling flexible, not dry and crisp.”
“The Falsies Push Up drama Washable Mascara, cup-shaped bristles lift lashes while creamy, pumping formula gives instant volume and holds lashes in place,” the Maybelline site says about their amazing Falsies Push Up mascara (which is only $10.49 on the website).
Maybelline further describes: “Dare to get the push-up effect! This creamy, plumping formula delivers instant volume and holds the curl in place while the Push Up Cup Brush scoops and lifts from root to tip. Lashes look lengthened for a dramatic eye look.”
It’s also proven safe for contact lens wearers!
And here we thought Super Sizing was a thing of the past. Nope, not according to CoverGirl.
“I love this mascara!” says one reviewer, who gave the mascara five stars.
“Definitely gives my straight lashes a curl! It doesn’t seem to get clumpy too easily, although I can go a little overboard. If you have straight lashes like me this will be perfect for you!” The cost is extremely minuscule as well: goes for $5.94 on Amazon (and if you’re a Prime member, you can get it within a day).
You immediately know if a mascara is good if you go onto a website and immediately see all five-star reviews – this is exactly what you’ll see if you explore around the reviews for L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Butterly Intenza Mascara.
“Stretch and extend your lashes like wings. Introducing Voluminous 'Butterfly Intenza'. Mascara, now with a breakthrough double-winged tip butterfly brush that fans out and loads lashes with up to 9x the volume, for a bolder, more intense ultra-fanned look,” the L’Oreal site says. The price tag isn’t too shabby either, starting at $8.99.
Not a lot of consumers are familiar with mascara that has both a primer and a gel, so L’Oreal has made it easier for makeup users not in the know.
This is some information everyone is going to want to get their hands on!
L'Oreal's website describes: “Double Extend Beauty Lash is a revolutionary lash extension effect mascara that provides up to 80% longer-looking, nourished lashes. Step 1: Ultra-nourishing base coat infused with Ceramide R and D-Panthenol protects and strengthens lashes, creating the perfect base for tube application. Step 2: Ultra-lengthening tube top coat sets to form lash-extending beauty tubes that visibly lengthen.”
Is it a little on the costly side? Perhaps (goes for $10). But is it worth it? Of course. Avon states: “This breakthrough mascara provides 24-hour phenomenal volume, leaving lashes darker, denser and more dramatic. Get ready for a corner to corner lash transformation with our first ever Wonderbrush.”
And yes, the Wonderbrush is something to be marveled in its design that gives special attention to each and every lash and the application doesn’t take long at all. The mascara goes for $10 at avon.com.
While the packaging seems to be simplistic enough, the mascara itself is absolutely not. “Get a blast of bold, volumizing mascaras! COVERGIRL LashBlast Volume Mascara gives you full and voluminous lashes,” the CoverGirl website exclaims.
“LashBlast’s patented volume-boosting hypoallergenic mascara formula and [the] patent-pending brush is designed to max out each and every lash, leaving you with the ultimate big lash look.”
And this puppy comes at a low price on Amazon, too: only $6.94!
This bad boy is also available in waterproof in case you were thinking about hitting the beach with thick lashes.
Sure, nothing really beats the original Voluminous… unless… well, they went and made it even better. And they did that by upping it a notch or five.
“Voluminous Carbon Black Volume Building Mascara is uniquely formulated to resist clumping, soften and build lashes up to 5X their natural thickness with 2X the intensity of your regular black shade,” the website says while listing their product at a mere $7.25.
“The unique maximizing formula quickly thickens and builds lashes in a single application for a full and dramatic look.”
While, yes, this is actually the most expensive selling mascara on this particular list, there’s a reason for it.
This certain waterproof mascara is actually made and tested on sensitive eyes.
“Waterproof mascara for sensitive eyes with an easy to remove formula,” the La Roche website states. “Volume mascara that makes lashes visibly denser, more curved and separated. Fragrance-free, Paraben-free, Allergy Tested, Ophthalmologist Tested mascara.”
While this mascara normally sells for $25 at drugstores, it’s only $23 on Amazon with that prime benefit.
When you first glance at it, you’d assume that, just based on the name, that this particular mascara has to be expensive as all heck. The fact of the matter is, it only goes for 6.99 at drugstores and Ulta!
“It’s an excellent product (and remarkably affordable a product) as Refinery29 described it, in the comparison test the website did. I bought extras, and I’m giving them away as gifts,” one happy reviewer wrote on Ulta’s website. Her bottom line? That she would gladly recommend to a friend.
This cheap wonder is the essence (see what I did there?) of what a “falsies” mascara should actually be.
And it’s downright affordable as well.
“I never question my $30 purchase for high-end mascaras but after using this… I’m not sure I’ll ever splurge on mascara again,” one reviewer on Amazon wrote.
“It works just as good if not better! Not clumpy, and doesn’t leave lashes hard or stiff!”. On Amazon, the cost is only $4.99 with Prime and received mostly five stars on the site itself.
There’s a reason why the CoverGirl Brand is on here so many times. It’s because the CoverGirl brand is notoriously reliable when it comes to their mascaras, this one included.
“This is probably my favorite mascara because it really brings depth to my eyelashes WITHOUT CLUMPING. I love how it defines them, lengthens, and brings volume to them all at once. This is a great mascara if you’re looking for definition and volume instead of really thick, clumpy stuff. Highly recommend,” one reviewer wrote.
It goes for $6.29 on Amazon.
It’s one thing a lot of us women have struggled with: hard lashes that simply hurt at the end of the day when we try to take off our makeup.
The ideal made-up lashes would be soft to the touch and look amazing.
Maybelline New York Full n’ Soft Washable Mascara does just that for a low cost of $7.77 on their website. “Say hello to full, thick, silky-soft lashes and goodbye to that brittle feeling. Helps to prevent lash loss,” Maybelline says.
